Describing Using Simple and Compound


Sentences
MELC: Describe one’s drawing about the stories/poems listened to using simple
and compound sentences.

Objective: The learner should be able to describe one’s drawing about the
stories/poems listened to using simple and compound sentences.

Let’s Try

Direction: Listen to the short story to be read to you by your learning


partner. Then, choose the letter of the correct sentence that describes
each picture using simple and compound sentences. Write on the
space provided.

Mang Nilo visited Puerto Princesa City and some part of the
province last year with his son Mark. They went to the Baywalk, the
Immaculate Conception Cathedral and Crocodile Farm in
Irawan. They saw the Palawan Peacock in the Crocodile Farm. They
spent the week visiting Estrella Falls in Narra, Palawan and Nacpan
Beach in El Nido, Palawan.

feathers.

feathers, and it has a sharp bill.

simple and compound complete thought.

The sentences that you have read are called simple sentences.

A simple sentence has one subject and one predicate. It also


must have a complete thought.

Now,with the help of your reading partner, read the sentence below.

The boy is writing and the girl is reading a book.

The first simple sentence is The boy is writing., while the second
simple sentence is The girl is reading a book. The word and is
used to join the two sentences that have equal value. And is
the common conjunction. Take note that the second sentence
starts with a small letter.

The boy is writing and the girl is reading a book., is an example of a


compound sentence.

Here are other examples:

Will I buy a new dress or will I buy a new pair of shoes?

The first simple sentence is Will I buy a new pair of shoes?, while
the second simple sentence is Will I buy a new dress? The word
or is used to join two alternative sentences. Take note that the
second sentence starts with a small letter.

A compound sentence has two simple sentences joined together


by a connector, a comma and a conjunction or a semicolon.
The most common conjunctions are and, but and or.
Take note that the second sentence starts with small letter except if
the word is a proper noun or pronoun “I”.
Example:
1. The teacher reads a short story and the pupils listen
attentively to her.
2. Will I bake a cake or will I make a gelatin?
3. I study hard but I failed in the test.
