DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS VI

I. Objectives

A. Content Standard
Demonstrates understanding of rate and speed, and of area and surface area of
plane and solid/space figures.
B. Performance Standard
Apply knowledge of speed, area, and surface area of plane and solid/space figures
in mathematical problems and real-life situations.
C. Learning Competency
Finds the surface area of rectangular prisms (M6ME-IIIi-93)

II. A. Topic: Finding the Surface Area of Rectangular Prism

B. Materials: Real Objects, Visual Aides, Chalk Board, Ruler or Meter Sticks,
Illustrations, Projector, Power Point Presentation

III. Learning Tasks

A. Engagement
1. Drill
Present a box. The box contains of the following cut-outs figures.

Let the pupils pick a figure from the box and identify its name and give its
formula in finding its area. Let them paste the figure on the chart.

Summary of Formula for Area of Some Plane Figures

Plane Figure Name Formula
2. Review
Present the problem.
Aldrin works for a company that remodels kitchens. In one kitchen, he
builds the rectangular island shown below. What is the size of the granite tiles that
he needs to cover its countertop?
6 feet

2.5 feet

Ask pupils how to get an area of a rectangle.

Let them answer the following:

a. What is being asked?_______________________________________

b. What are the given?________________________________________
c. What operation to be used?__________________________________
d. Solution:_________________________________________________
e. Answer:_________________________________________________

3. Motivation

Teach the SURFACE AREA SONG

Adding the up the area of each face of a solid

Just add carefully to get the right sum
If you don’t the answer is wrong

Length times width is the area of one face of a solid

Keep repeating that until you are done
With each face that’s a different size

It’s the whole surface area

That you will find
Rising up to the challenge of your mind

And the last thing to know

is that you units are square
Surface A R E A we can find

Surface Area
B. Exploration

Group the pupils in 5. Let them answer the questions about the problem.
Gerald owns an antique shop. He is refinishing a rectangular jewelry box shown
below. The can of varnish he is using has enough liquid left in it to cover 30 cm 2 . Is
there enough varnish left in the can to refinish the jewelry box?
l=7 cm

h=5 cm

w=7 cm

1. How many sides (faces) does the box have?

2. What is the shape of the bottom and top faces of the box?
3. What is the shape of the side faces (left side, back, right side, front)?

C. Explanation

Before the pupils present their output, show them first a picture of SpongeBob.

Ask the pupils to describe Sponge Bob.

Ask the following:
1. What is length? (Length is the distance from one end to of something to
the other end; a measurement of how long something is)
2. What is width? (Width is the distance from one side to of something to
the other side; a measurement of how wide something is)
3. What is height? (Height is a measurement of how tall something is; it is
also the distance from bottom to top)

Let the leader of each group presents their output.

The teacher shows a picture of rectangular prism.

Using the problem given in group activity, discuss the definition of surface area.

Surface area refers to the sum of all faces.

Explain the formula in getting the surface area of rectangular prism.

SA= 2 (lh +lw+ wh)

Example: l=7 cm

h=5 cm

w=7 cm

Give more examples.

D. Elaborate

1. Generalization:

What are the three dimensions?

What is surface area?
What is the formula in finding the surface area of rectangular prism?

2. Application:

Solve for the following.

1. w= 4 cm 2. l=10 in

h= 6 in

h=7cm w=5 in

l= 6 cm
