UNIT 1 :

INTRODUCTION
TO
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Session 2: (Relate)
Implementations of AI in Real Life
• Driverless cars
• Siri(Apple), Alexa(Amazon), Google Assistant(Google), Cortana (Microsoft).
• Smart speakers
• Smart Locks
• Netflix
• Cogito
• Drones
• Chatbots
• Smart replies in gmail
• Filters in gmail
• Predictive searches
• AI camera
Impact of AI in Real Life
• Al systems can be implemented to automate repetitive,
monotonous and dangerous tasks. Al systems are
believed to perform these tasks reliably without getting
bored and getting tired.
• Al systems can learn on their own by doing repetitive
tasks.
• Al solutions can be used to improve an already
existing product by combining it with existing
products for home as well as for workplace.
• Al systems can be implemented to detect frauds and
can even help in solving crimes as they have the ability
to analyse a bulk data deeply which is impossible for
human beings.
• Al systems can be implemented for monitoring and
diagnosis of various diseases. This has influenced
healthcare sector in a big way.
Smart Living
• Internet of Things (IoT)— The Internet of
Things (IoT) is a networking device which
allows "thing" (smart devices) to
communicate over internet for sharing data
and signals in order to accomplish a task on
hand.
• The platform of IoT gives an environment
where control chips embedded in the smart
devices communicate with each other over
the internet. Each smart device is voice
enabled so as to decide what t do with the
data and the signals and how to use that data
to learn for executing the same task in future.
• Ex— Smart homes and smart cities
Smart Homes
• Smart home is the modern home equipped
with technology that enables the members
of the home to control various electronic
rooms using a mobile app.
• Home can be considered a smart home if it
has appliances such as washing machines,
microwaves, refrigerators, ACs, lighting
system, audio video systems, cameras,
security system, computers etc. connected
and controlled through an app on a mobile.
Challenges of Smart Homes
• Smart home technology is very beneficial but has some drawbacks too. Now, let
us discuss the challenges iced in the implementation of smart homes.
• Since smart homes are dependent on the internet for functioning, in case of
internet failure users will not be able to access and control the smart devices.
• The smart devices are very expensive thus making the entire smart home
expensive which is not affordable for majority of people.
• As all the devices are connected through internet it can become a threat as well.
Hacker can hack the devices, misuse and control them.
• The data or images are also available on internet which can be used by a hacker
for his benefit.
• Members who are not technically well versed will find it difficult to operate and
use smart devices.
Smart Cities
• The main objective of a smart
city is to provide modern basic
infrastructure and give its
residents quality life. It not only
aims to provide a clean and
sustainable environment but
also includes smart solutions for
the city. Thus, the Smart City
infrastructure would include
adequate resources and facilities
for its citizens.
Benefits of a Smart City
• Proper water and safe energy supply.
• Efficient public transport.
• Affordable housing for all.
• Easy internet connectivity.
• Good governance with equal citizen
participation.
• Sanitation including solid waste
management.
• Sustainable climate.
• Safety and security of the residents.
• Better healthcare facilities for the
residents.
• Education for all.
Challenges in establishing Smart Cities
• Lack of internet facilities.
• Cyber security.
• Lack of digital literacy.
• Improper network connectivity.
• Inadequate funds and improper
utilization of the funds.
What is not AI?
• We see technology around us in our daily lives. Everything that is automatic is not always Al.
• There's a thin line that divides the technology that uses Al or not.
• The machine that is trained with data and has the capacity to make decisions or predictions is
Artificial Intelligent.
• Here are few examples that are not Al as they do not think on their own but are simply acting upon
the set of instructions:
• Automatic washing machine: The washing instructions are fed by humans in an automatic washing
machine. You have to select the type of fabric, quantity of detergent, time duration of rinse and
other features in order to run the machine. It works on the instructions and options selected by us to
perform.
• Air conditioners or remote-control fans: These are examples of Internet of Things (IoT) where you
have to instruct the "on" and "off" switches. It is dependent on humans for instructions, and has no
processing capacity of its own.
• Remote control toys-cars: They are remote driven cars and do not have its own processing. The
performance of the toy is controlled by the person with the remote control.
• Smart TV: It is a TV with internet connection that allows browsing and using OTT platforms. It is
not using Al to process any data. It displays the information based on the data provided.
