1. The Sikkim High Court, the smallest high court in India, has become the first high court in India to introduce a paid
menstrual leave policy for female employees. Women staff members can avail ‘2-3 days of menstrual leave’ each month.
This leave will not be counted against the employee’s overall leave account. This policy seeks to enhance awareness and

2. Two of Bihar’s wetlands have been added to the “Global List of Wetlands of
International Importance” under the Ramsar Convention (also known as The
Convention on Wetlands), taking tally of Ramsar sites in India to 82. The Nagi and
Nakti bird sanctuaries, both located in Bihar’s Jamui district, are now recognised
under the Ramsar Convention. These two new wetlands are man-made reservoirs
situated in the Jhajha forest range of Jamui. Both sites were declared as Wetlands
of International importance on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5. The Ramsar Convention is an international
environmental treaty signed on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, under the auspices of UNESCO. {Read more}

3. Secretary of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), S Krishnan, has inaugurated the “Indigenous Air
Quality Monitoring System (AQ-AIMS)” and launched “Air-Pravah” App on the occasion of World Environment Day. The
Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Kolkata in collaboration with TeXMIN (ISM, Dhanbad) and industry
partner J M Envirolab Pvt Ltd, under the ‘National programme on Electronics and ICT applications in Agriculture and
Environment (AgriEnIcs)’, has developed an outdoor air quality monitoring system to monitor environmental pollutants,
Temperature, Humidity, etc, for continuous air quality monitoring. The AQ-AIMS comes with the mobile application named
“Air-Pravah” for real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) monitoring. It offers quick setup, real-time data visualization, unit
conversions, AQI comparison, multi-device support, data analysis tools, remote monitoring and automatic updates. {Read

4. NSE India, the country’s largest stock exchange and world’s largest derivatives exchange, has made
history by registering highest ever transactions in a single day on June 5, 2024 within 6 hours and 15
minutes. The exchange handled 1,971 crore orders and 28.55 crore trades. This happened on a day
when Nifty50 staged a strong rebound and settled 736 points or 3.36% higher at 22,620. {Read more}

5. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed an
MoU to facilitate collaboration between the two Ministries in operating a special cell of “Tele
MANAS”, the National Telemental Health Helpline of MoHFW, as a pilot project for a period of
two years at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune. Tele MANAS is the digital
extension of the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), offering comprehensive, integrated,
and inclusive 24/7 tele-mental health services. The initiative provides a toll-free number, 14416, in each State and Union
Territory (UT) for easy access to mental health support. Currently, there are 51 operational Tele MANAS cells functioning
across all 36 States and UTs, offering services in 20 different languages. Since its launch in October 2022, Tele MANAS has
received over 10 lakh calls and is managing more than 3,500 calls daily. {Read more}

6. Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) recently celebrated its 33 rd Foundation Day,
commemorating over three decades of unparalleled contributions towards the Indian
technology sector in terms of software exports. The event was held in New Delhi with the
theme of “Positioning Bharat as a Tech Product Nation”. To strengthen the tech startup
ecosystem in terms of networking and affordable incubation space, STPI launched a
networking and resource discovery platform, “SayujNet”, and “STPI Workspace” portal.
STPI announced its initiative towards developing India’s sovereign cloud journey under the brand name “Ananta”, which will
be a hyperscale cloud made by Indians for Indians. Moreover, an MoU was signed between Sabudh Foundation and STPI
with the objective of creating skill-development initiatives and nurturing an entrepreneurial training ecosystem in DeepTech
for Engineering Graduates. The event also saw an MoU exchange between STPINEXT initiatives and DBS Bank India Pvt Ltd

7. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has planned “Industry 4.0”, a 60-day survey of micro, medium and small
enterprises (MSMEs) to help them adopt emerging technologies in the 5G and 6G domain. The DoT has asked organisations
and startups to submit proposals by June 11, 2024 to participate in this survey. The survey will be targeted on understanding
the challenges faced by MSMEs in adapting to advanced industry 4.0 technologies, with the aim to lay the groundwork for
a robust ecosystem capable of capitalizing on the capabilities offered by AI, IoT, cloud computing and the integration of 5G
and 6G networks. The survey will include identifying sector-specific needs in at least 10 sectors, to provide targeted support

8. Zuperspeed Automotive, a Bangalore-based start-up, is set to introduce “Hyperflux”,


India’s first electric sports car. Zuperspeed Automotive aims to set new standards in the
Indian automotive industry. The Hyperflux is designed to deliver high-speed acceleration and
a powerful driving experience, all while producing zero emissions. Ijaz Anvar, the founder

9. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has allowed Indian Universities and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to offer
admissions twice a year on lines of foreign universities. The two admission cycles will be July-August and January-February
from the 2024-25 academic session. At present, universities and colleges admit students annually in July-August every year,
in regular mode. Biannual admissions can substantially increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio and make India a ‘Global Study

10. Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog, has launched two groundbreaking initiatives
aimed at fostering innovation and sustainability in India - the 4th edition of “Water Challenge
4.0” and the 5th edition of “Innovations for You”, a coffee table book, spotlighting SDG
entrepreneurs of India. The open innovation water challenge was conducted in collaboration
with the Innovation Centre Denmark (ICDK) at the Royal Danish Embassy in India. This
initiative endeavors to address critical water-related challenges through inventive solutions.
The selected teams will form the Indian cohort which will participate in the ‘Global Next Generation Digital Action’ program
and engage with young talents from leading universities and innovation hubs of 9 countries (India, Denmark, Ghana, Kenya,
Korea, Tanzania, South Africa, Ghana, Colombia and Mexico). The challenge invites entries under two tracks: One for the
students and the other for the young entrepreneurs both under the age of 35. Additionally, participants will have the
opportunity to showcase innovations at the ‘Digital Tech Summit’ scheduled in Copenhagen from October 30 to 31, 2024

11. Oracle and Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC) have jointly launched a Specialised Skills Development
Programme under Tamil Nadu’s massive skill enhancement initiative, “Naan Mudhalvan”, to provide employment-linked
skills development training to more than 2 lakh students in the State. TNSDC is also collaborating with Oracle to offer Oracle
Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) training to help students in the State advance their careers. As part of the new skilling initiative,
over 2 lakh youth at different stages of their learning and professional goals, will be trained and certified on modern
technologies from Oracle, including cloud, data science, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and blockchain.

12. Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved government assistance for the construction of 3 crore additional houses under
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Of the 3 crore houses, 2 crore will be constructed under PMAY-Gramin, while 1 crore
under PMAY-Urban. Under the PMAY-G, each beneficiary gets funds up to Rs 1.2 lakh in the plains and Rs 1.3 lakh in hilly
states, difficult areas, and tribal and backward districts under the Integrated Action Plan (IAP). As per the sources, the Centre
has decided to increase the cost of construction of the PMAY-G house by 50% from existing Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 1.8 lakh in the
plains and Rs 1.3 lakh to Rs 2 lakh in the hilly areas. The Centre and states share expenses in 60:40 ratio in case of plain
areas, and in 90:10 ratio for northeastern states, two Himalayan states and the UT of Jammu and Kashmir. The Centre bears

13. Pakistan, Somalia, Denmark, Greece and Panama were elected as non-permanent members of the
UN Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term beginning 2025. The 5 members were elected by a
secret ballot in the UN General Assembly for a 2-year term starting on January 1, 2025, until December
31, 2026. These newly elected members will replace Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Ecuador and
Switzerland. The newly elected members will join Algeria, Guyana, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone
and Slovenia as the other non-permanent members of UNSC. The UNSC comprises 15 members, 5 of
whom are permanent and 10 non-permanent. The five permanent members of the UNSC are the USA, the UK, France, Russia
and China. They have veto power. India has been elected 8 times as a non-permanent member of UNSC. {Read more}

14. Peru and Slovakia officially signed the NASA’s “Artemis Accords”, a set of principles
that aims to lay out a framework for peaceful cooperation in space and on the moon. The
addition of these two nations brings the total of signing countries to 42. The Artemis
Accords were first launched and signed in October 2020 by 8 nations. Through the
Artemis program, NASA and its international partners aim to establish a permanent and

15. The United Nations has designated 2025 as the “International Year of Quantum Science and Technology” to increase
public awareness about the importance of quantum science, encourage young people to study it and bolster support for
using it to address current challenges. 2025 marks 100 years since the publication of a paper by the German physicist Werner
Heisenberg, which laid the foundation for quantum mechanics. The resolution to declare 2025 as “International Year of
Quantum Science and Technology” was submitted by Ghana, co-sponsored by 6 other countries. Quantum mechanics is a
fundamental theory in physics that describes the behavior of nature at and below the scale of atoms. Moreover, 2024 is
being observed as the “International Year of Camelids” by the UN to raise awareness about the economic, social, and cultural

16. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das announced the 2nd bi-monthly
monetary policy of the financial year 2024-25. The RBI Governor headed 6-member
Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to keep the benchmark repo rate unchanged at
6.5% for the 8th consecutive time. RBI raised its GDP growth forecast for FY25 to 7.2% from
7% earlier. The central bank retained CPI inflation forecast at 4.5% for FY25. During the MPC
meeting, RBI proposed to revise the definition of bulk deposits as ‘Single Rupee term deposit
of ₹3 crore and above’ for Scheduled Commercial Banks (excluding RRBs) and Small Finance Banks (SFBs). Further, it also
proposed to define the bulk deposit limit for Local Area Banks as ‘Single Rupee term deposits of ₹1 crore and above’. Besides,
the RBI announced the establishment of a “Digital Payments Intelligence Platform”. This platform will leverage advanced
technologies like AI and machine learning to identify and mitigate fraud risks, ultimately leading to a safer digital payments
environment. To advance this initiative, the RBI has also formed a committee, chaired by A. P. Hota, former MD & CEO of
NPCI. The RBI also announced the launch of the 3rd edition of the RBI’s global hackathon, “HARBINGER 2024 - Innovation for
Transformation”, aimed at enhancing the safety, security, and inclusivity of India’s financial ecosystem. The winners of this
hackathon will receive prize money of Rs 40 lakh across each problem statement. Special Prize worth Rs 20 lakh will be given

17. New York-based credit ratings and research giant, Moody’s, has affirmed the “Baa3” ratings
on three Indian public sector banks, including Bank of Baroda (BOB), Canara Bank, and Punjab
National Bank (PNB). The rating agency maintained a stable outlook on the long-term ratings
of all three banks. The banks’ non-performing loan (NPL) ratios have also declined. It is a ratio

18. Hong Kong has launched trading of Asia’s first Spot Bitcoin and Ether Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) to become a regional
virtual asset investment hub. Hong Kong’s pioneering crypto ETFs on the city’s bourse include 6 funds issued by 3 managers
- Bosera Funds, China Asset Management (Hong Kong) Limited and Harvest Global Investments. Each company issued a spot
bitcoin and a spot ether ETF. Hong Kong also allows investors to carry out in-kind creation and redemption through eligible

19. Punjab National Bank (PNB) and India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL) have signed an agreement to offer
long-term financial assistance to viable infrastructure projects. With this, both the institutions will collaborate to fund the
infrastructure projects wherein the parties can mutually participate under consortium/multiple lending arrangements to
provide financial support to the prospective borrowers subject to due diligence and on a case-to-case basis. Padmanabhan

26. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has issued a framework for Financial Disincentive in Case of
Surveillance Related Lapses (FDSRL) for Market Infrastructure Institutions (MIIs). The framework will come into effect from
July 1, 2024. MIIs such as stock exchanges, clearing corporations and depositories may now have to pay a fine if there are
any surveillance-related lapses. Penalties may vary from 1 lakh to Rs 1 crore for each instance of surveillance related lapse

27. Bank of India (BOI) has launched a “666 Days Fixed Deposit (FD)”, which offers returns of up
to 7.95% per annum for senior citizens on deposit amounts less than ₹2 crore. On this 666-day

31. Data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed that Consumer
Price Index (CPI)-based retail inflation eased to a 12-month low of 4.75% in May
2024, on the back of a softening core and fuel inflation. Besides, the Index of
Industrial Production (IIP) also moderated to 5% in April 2024, from 5.4% in the

46. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has spotted the earliest-known galaxy,
called “JADES-GS-z14-0”. The discovery was made by an international team of astronomers,
who used JWST to observe galaxies as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey
(JADES) program. This galaxy measures about 1,700-light years across. The galaxy has a mass
equivalent to 500 million stars the size of our Sun. The galaxy is surprisingly bright and big
considering it formed during the universe’s infancy. It existed about 290 million years after the

62. The Centre has appointed Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi as next Chief of the Army Staff. He will take charge

77. Rajasthan government has decided to ramp up water conservation work in the state through the “Mukhyamantri Jal
Swavlamban Abhiyan 2.0”. The move comes after many areas in the state reported water scarcity. Under the campaign, 5
lakh water harvesting structures are proposed to be built in 20,000 villages in the next 4 years. With annual rainfall in the
state ranging from 100 mm to 800 mm, many parts of the state face unavailability of water, even for drinking purposes.
Recently, Rajasthan State Industrial Development & Investment Corporation (RIICO) had issued a circular stating all plot
lessees with an area of 500 square metres and above would need to construct Rainwater Harvesting Structures (RWHS) in
their premises for water conservation and increasing the level of groundwater. A penalty would also be charged for delay in
completion of RWHS. The penalty amounts to Rs 25,000 per annum for plot sizes ranging from 500 sq m-2,000 sq m and Rs
50,000 per annum for plots above 2,000 sq m. {Read more}

78. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sanctioned the 17th instalment of the “PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme”, his first
move after being sworn-in as PM for the third consecutive time. The instalment is expected to benefit 9.3 crore farmers and
entails distribution of around Rs 20,000 crore. Launched in 2019, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN)
scheme offers eligible farmers an annual financial assistance of ₹6,000. This amount is distributed in three equal instalments

79. The Haryana government has removed the age limit cap under the “Mukhyamantri Kisan Evam Khetihar Mazdoor Jeevan
Suraksha Yojana”, a scheme for farmers and farm labourers under which financial assistance is provided in case of death or
disability while operating agricultural machinery. The government has taken a decision to remove the age limit cap for
farmers, agriculture labourers, and market yard labourers. Now, children younger than 10 years and persons older than 65
years will also be eligible for benefits under the scheme. Earlier, under the scheme, the age group of the victim had to be
not less than 10 years and more than 65 years. Under this scheme, financial assistance ranging from Rs 37,500 to Rs 5 lakh
is provided to farmers, agriculture labourers, and market yard labourers in case of death or disability while operating

80. In a move to boost innovation in textiles, the Central Government has approved grants of Rs 50 lakh each for 7 startups
in the technical textiles sector under the ‘National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM)’. The grants have been approved under
the NTTM’s ‘Grant for Research and Entrepreneurship across Aspiring Innovators in Technical Textiles (GREAT)’ scheme. This
initiative aims to promote innovation and sustainability while fostering transformative developments in the industry. The
ministry has set a target to support 150 startups to promote innovations in technical textiles. Additionally, the textiles
ministry has relaxed the royalty cap on this scheme. Besides startup funding, the Empowered Programme Committee (EPC)
has also approved a grant of Rs 6.4 crore to IIT Guwahati. This funding will be utilised to introduce new subjects in technical
textiles and enhance the laboratory infrastructure in the institute’s Civil Engineering Department. As per a KPMG report, the
Indian technical textiles market is the 5th largest in the world and stood at $21.95 billion in 2021-22. {Read more}

and Production of various Horticultural Crops” compiled on the basis of information received from States/ UTs and other

be about 352.23 Million Tonnes, decrease of about 32.51 Lakh Tonnes (0.91%). Increase in production of Fruits, Honey,

83. The number of High Net-worth Individuals (HNWI) in India increased by 12.2% in 2023 compared to 2022, bringing the
total number of HNWI population to 3.589 million, as per the Capgemini Research Institute’s “World Wealth Report 2024”.
The financial wealth of India’s HNWIs increased by 12.4% in 2023 to $1,445.7 billion. Among the best performers in the
APAC region were India and Australia, which recorded HNWI wealth growth of 12.4% and 7.9%, and HNWI population growth
of 12.2% and 7.8%, respectively. A resilient economy and robust performance of the equity markets drove wealth growth in

84. According to the report titled “A World of Debt 2024: A Growing Burden to
Global Prosperity” released by the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the
level of public debt has not just reached a historic level but also threatens
countries’ development spending, particularly among developing and poor
countries. Global public debt (both domestic and external borrowing by
governments) reported a steep hike at $97 trillion in 2023, an increase of $5.6
trillion over 2022. Developing countries share 30% of the total global debt.
According to the Institute of International Finance, global debt (including
borrowings of households, businesses and governments) has reached $315
trillion in 2024. Of the total global debt, household debt stands at $59.1 trillion;

into the Top 20 rankings in the 4th edition of “Container Port Performance Index
2023 (CPPI 2023)”, released by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
Visakhapatnam Port or Visakha Container Terminal Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned unit of
J M Baxi Ports & Logistics, was ranked 19 in the medium ports category, higher than

86. India has slipped two places on the World Economic Forum’s (WEF)
“Global Gender Gap Index” to 129th place, while Iceland retained its
top position in the rankings. Within South Asia, India was ranked 5th
after Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan, while Pakistan was
ranked last. Iceland was followed by Finland, Norway, New Zealand
and Sweden in the top five. The U.K. was ranked 14th, while the USA
was at 43rd place. Globally, Sudan was ranked last on the index of 146
countries, while Pakistan slipped three places to 145th. India figured
among the economies with the lowest levels of economic parity,
alongside Bangladesh, Sudan, Iran, Pakistan, and Morocco. However,
India showed the best gender parity in terms of enrolment in
secondary education. India has closed 64.1% of its gender gap in 2024
and the decline of two places from 127th last year mainly happened
due to small declines in ‘Educational Attainment’ and ‘Political Empowerment,’ parameters. The world has closed 68.5% of

87. Around 46% of rural and 53% of urban individuals in India availed of Ayush for the prevention or
treatment of ailments in the past year, according to findings of a survey released by the Ministry of
Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). Ayush refers to the 6 Indian systems of medicines
- Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa, and Homeopathy. Among systems of
Ayush, Ayurveda is the most commonly used system for treatment. The survey states that about 95%
of the rural population aged 15 years and above in India are aware of Ayush, whereas the number
stands at 96% for urban India. The findings are a part of the first exclusive all-India survey on Ayush
conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) from July 2022 to June 2023, as part of the
