1. The Sikkim High Court, the smallest high court in India, has become the first high court in India to introduce a paid
menstrual leave policy for female employees. Women staff members can avail ‘2-3 days of menstrual leave’ each month.
This leave will not be counted against the employee’s overall leave account. This policy seeks to enhance awareness and
facilitate better access to appropriate menstrual hygiene management practices throughout the nation. {Read more}

2. Two of Bihar’s wetlands have been added to the “Global List of Wetlands of
International Importance” under the Ramsar Convention (also known as The
Convention on Wetlands), taking tally of Ramsar sites in India to 82. The Nagi and
Nakti bird sanctuaries, both located in Bihar’s Jamui district, are now recognised
under the Ramsar Convention. These two new wetlands are man-made reservoirs
situated in the Jhajha forest range of Jamui. Both sites were declared as Wetlands
of International importance on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5. The Ramsar Convention is an international
environmental treaty signed on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, under the auspices of UNESCO. {Read more}

3. Pakistan, Somalia, Denmark, Greece and Panama were elected as non-permanent members of the
UN Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term beginning 2025. The 5 members were elected by a
secret ballot in the UN General Assembly for a 2-year term starting on January 1, 2025, until
December 31, 2026. These newly elected members will replace Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Ecuador
and Switzerland. The newly elected members will join Algeria, Guyana, the Republic of Korea, Sierra
Leone and Slovenia as the other non-permanent members of UNSC. The UNSC comprises 15
members, 5 of whom are permanent and 10 non-permanent. The five permanent members of the UNSC are the USA, the
UK, France, Russia and China. They have veto power. India has been elected 8 times as a non-permanent member of

4. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das announced the 2nd bi-monthly
monetary policy of the financial year 2024-25. The RBI Governor headed 6-member
Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to keep the benchmark repo rate unchanged at
6.5% for the 8th consecutive time. RBI raised its GDP growth forecast for FY25 to 7.2% from
7% earlier. The central bank retained CPI inflation forecast at 4.5% for FY25. During the MPC
meeting, RBI proposed to revise the definition of bulk deposits as ‘Single Rupee term
deposit of ₹3 crore and above’ for Scheduled Commercial Banks (excluding RRBs) and Small Finance Banks (SFBs). Further,
it also proposed to define the bulk deposit limit for Local Area Banks as ‘Single Rupee term deposits of ₹1 crore and
above’. Besides, the RBI announced the establishment of a “Digital Payments Intelligence Platform”. This platform will
leverage advanced technologies like AI and machine learning to identify and mitigate fraud risks, ultimately leading to a
safer digital payments environment. The RBI also announced the launch of the 3rd edition of the RBI’s global hackathon,
“HARBINGER 2024 - Innovation for Transformation”, aimed at enhancing the safety, security, and inclusivity of India’s

5. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has spotted the earliest-known galaxy,
called “JADES-GS-z14-0”. The discovery was made by an international team of astronomers,
who used JWST to observe galaxies as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey
(JADES) program. This galaxy measures about 1,700-light years across. The galaxy has a
mass equivalent to 500 million stars the size of our Sun. The galaxy is surprisingly bright and
big considering it formed during the universe’s infancy. It existed about 290 million years after
the Big Bang event. Until now, the earliest-known galaxy dated to about 320 million years after the Big Bang. {Read more}

6. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) have collaborated to
develop a Standardized Time System for the moon as part of the Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the
lunar surface. The initiative addresses the need for a unified timekeeping system to coordinate missions from different
countries and private entities. The moon’s day-night cycle lasts about 29.5 Earth days. The Artemis program, led by NASA,
aims to land the first woman and the next man on the moon by 2024. {Read more}

7. China has become the first country to display its national flag on the moon’s far side, which permanently faces away
from Earth. The Chang’e-6 lunar probe, carrying the first lunar rocks ever collected from
the far side of the moon, took off and entered lunar orbit, following successful sample
collection over the previous two days. Chang’e-6 successfully landed in the South Pole-
Aitken Basin, the moon’s oldest impact basin formed some 4 billion years ago. It marked
the 2nd time a mission has successfully reached the far side of the moon, after China first
completed that historic feat in 2019 with its Chang’e-4 probe. {Read more}

8. The “Tmesipteris oblanceolate”, a fork fern species, has been crowned as Guinness World
Record holder for having the world’s largest genome of any organism on the Earth. It is 7%
larger than that of the previous record-holder, the Japanese flowering plant, ‘Paris japonica’,
and more than 50 times the size of the human genome. The fern grows primarily on the ground
or atop fallen tree trunks in New Caledonia, about 750 miles (1,200 km) east of Australia. The
specimens used in the study were collected last year on New Caledonia’s Grande Terre Island.

9. Indian archers have won 5 medals (1 gold, 2 silver & 2 bronze) at the Archery Asia Cup
2024 Stage 3 in Suwon, South Korea. Kumud Saini won the sole gold medal by defeating Park
Yerin of South Korea in the women’s compound gold event. Kumud Saini, Maya Bishnoi and
Tejal Rajendra Salve won silver in the Women’s compound team event, while other silver medal
was won by Kumud Saini and Manav Jadhao in the Mixed compound team event. The Archery

award ceremony held in Monaco’s Salle des Etoiles. Vellayan was selected from among nearly 5,000
programme participants that included 51 winners across 47 countries and jurisdictions competing
for the global title. He is the 4th winner from India in the award’s 24-year history, after Narayana

11. The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the “Second Advance Estimates of 2023-24 of Area
and Production of various Horticultural Crops” compiled on the basis of information received from States/ UTs and other
Governmental source agencies. The horticulture production in India in 2023-24 (Second Advance Estimates) is estimated
to be about 352.23 Million Tonnes, decrease of about 32.51 Lakh Tonnes (0.91%). Increase in production of Fruits, Honey,
Flowers, Plantation Crops, Spices and Aromatics & Medicinal Plants is seen over 2023-24 (Final Estimates) whereas
decrease in Vegetables. The horticulture production in India in 2023-24 (First Advance Estimates) was estimated at 355.25

12. CSC SPV and Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare have signed an MoU to convert 10,000 Farmer Producer
Organisations (FPOs) into Common Service Centres (CSCs). CSC SPV will enable them to provide the services that are
available on the Digital Seva Portal. With this initiative, more farmers who are associated with FPOs, will be able to avail
the benefits of CSC services. It will also help FPOs to become a nodal center for providing various services like Direct
Benefit Transfer (DBT), Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS), Crop Insurance Scheme (PMFBY), and Fertilizer & Seed Inputs.

Earth Sciences, have signed an MoU to empower the inhabitants of coastal areas. After the collaboration, both entities will
work to leverage ocean data, enhancing climate resilience and disaster mitigation. The aim of the foundation, after the
partnership, is to reach nearly 25% of India’s active marine fisherperson families, mainly across 8 states. Dr Srinivasa
