MEC1202/AEN1208: Engineering Mechanics II

07th June, 2017

Duration: 3.0 Hours (1400 – 1700 Hours)

Instructions:
 The Examination paper contains SIX Questions.
 Attempt any Five questions of your choice.
 Each Question Carries 20 Marks
 Marks for each question are indicated in parentheses.
 Indicate the attempted questions on the top page of the answer booklet
provided.
Question 1 (20 Marks)

i. Derive the relationship between linear impulse and linear momentum, and define the
terms of the equation. (4 marks)
ii. Cylinder A is given an initial downward speed of 2m/s. Determine the speed of each
cylinder when t = 3 s. Neglect the mass of the pulleys. Use the principle of impulse and
momentum. (12 marks)

iii. A bowling ball is cast on the “alley” with a backspin of ω=10 rad/s while its center O has
a forward velocity of vO = 8 m/s. Determine the velocity of the contact point A in
contact with the alley. Use the relative velocity method. (4 marks)

Question 2 (20 Marks)

i. A particle is traveling along a circular curve having a radius of 20 m. If it has an initial
speed of 20 m/s and then begins to decrease its speed at the rate of at = (-0.25s) m/s2,
determine the magnitude of the acceleration of the particle two seconds later.
(10 marks)
3
ii. The position of a particle is described by r = (t3+4t- 4) mm and  = (t 2 )rad where t is in
seconds. Determine the magnitudes of the particle’s velocity and acceleration at the
instant t =2 s. (10 marks)

1
Question 3 (20 Marks)
i. The 2-kg ball is thrown so that it travels horizontally at 10 m/s when it strikes the 6-kg
block as it istraveling down the inclined plane at 1m/s. If the coefficientof restitution
between the ball and the block is e = 0.6 ,determine the speeds of the ball and the
block just after the impact. Also, what distance does B slide up the plane before it
momentarily stops? The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the plane
is µk = 0.4 . (12 marks)

ii. If link CD has an angular velocity of ωCD = 6rad/s, determine the velocity of point E on
link BC and the angular velocity of link AB at the instant shown. Use the instantaneous
center of zero velocity. (8 marks)

Question 4 (20 Marks)

i. The cone rolls in a circle and rotates about the z axis at a constant rate ωz= 8 rad/s.
Determine the angular velocity and angular acceleration of the cone if it rolls without
slipping. Also, what are the velocity and acceleration of point A? (14 marks)

2
ii. If the cord is subjected to a horizontal force of P = 150 N, and the gear rack is fixed to
the horizontal plane, determine the angular velocity of the gear in 4 s, starting from rest.
The mass of the gear is 50 kg, and it has a radius of gyration about its center of mass O
of 𝑘O = 125 mm (6 marks)

Question 5 (20 Marks)

i. State at least four (4) major engineering applications of kinematics (2 marks)
ii. A sphere is fired downwards into a medium with an initial speed of 27 m/s. If it
experiences a deceleration of a = (-6t) m/s where t is in seconds, determine the
distance travelled before it stops. (10 marks)
iii. The velocity of the water jet discharging from the orifice can be obtained from
v = 2 gh , where h=2 m is the depth of the orifice from the free water surface.
Determine the time for a particle of water leaving the orifice to reach point B and the
horizontal distance x where it hits the surface. (8 marks)

Question 6 (20 Marks)

i. The buoyancy force on the 500-kg balloon is F=6 kN, and the air resistance is F D =(100v)
N, where v is in m/s. Determine the terminal or maximum velocity of the balloon if it
starts from rest. (7 marks)

3
ii. The spring in the toy gun has an unstretched length of 100 mm. It is compressed and
locked in the position shown. When the trigger is pulled, the spring unstretches 12.5 mm,
and the 20-g ball moves along the barrel. Determine the speed of the ball when it
leaves the gun using
(a) Principle of work and energy (5 marks)
(b) Conservation of energy. Neglect friction. (5 marks)

iii. Define power and efficiency of a machine, and state the relationship between them.
