1. Purpose
1.1. The purpose of the procedure is to ensure that visual inspection is performed and reported in line with
the valid (project) requirements, norms and specifications in order to achieve a constant and repeatable
level of quality during each inspection.
1.2. This procedure is developed to be in compliance with ASME Section V, 2019 edition.
1.3. When required by the referencing Code Section, this examination method performed under the following
written procedure shall be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Authorized Inspector and as per
requirements of ASME Section V, Article 1 Para T-150.
2. Scope
2.1. The procedure applies to the inspection for detecting abnormalities and discontinuities in tubes, piping,
pressure vessel, etc., using one (1) or more of the following techniques:
2.2. It includes remote visual inspection of all types of enclosed areas to inspect any of the following;
2.3. This procedure will be shared between each inspection team, inspection coordinator and client’s
representative upon request.

RVI Remote Visual Inspection
IS Intrinsically Safe
Push rode used to connect the camera to the Camera Control Unit and to push/pull the camera in a pipe. It
is semi-rigid and can therefore project around elbows. It is strong enough to allow up to 150
meters to be pushed in one direction from the access point.
Skids used to protect the cameras and light heads as well as to position the camera on, or close to, the
centre line of the pipe.
Tractor sometimes called ‘crawler’. A motorised vehicle used to carry a light head and camera into a pipe.
It can be driven forward and backward. Different sizes and types of wheels can be fitted for use
in different size and material pipes. It has pan & tilt capabilities to view the circumference of the
pipe.

5. Procedure Qualification
5.1. When procedure qualification is specified by the referencing Code Section, requirements for Visual
Examination shall be met as per Table 1.
5.2. A change of a requirement in Table 1 identified as an essential variable shall require requalification of
the written procedure by demonstration
5.3. A change of a requirement in Table 1 identified as a nonessential variable does not require requalification
of the written procedure
5.4. NDT Level III shall approve this procedure upon satisfactory demonstration.

6. Personnel
6.1. Personnel conducting tubes inspection shall have a minimum certification of Level 1 in accordance with
L3-MYS-029.
6.2. Personnel analysing test results shall have a minimum certification of Level 2 in accordance with L3-
MYS-029.
6.3. Personnel undergoing training shall conduct inspections under the supervision of a certified technician.
7. Equipment
7.1. General
7.1.1. The equipment used shall have the capabilities include, but are not limited to viewing, magnifying,
identifying, measuring, and/or recording observations in accordance with requirements of the
referencing Code Section.
7.1.2. Such systems shall have a resolution capability at least equivalent to that obtainable by direct
visual observation.
7.1.3. The equipment shall have a light source to satisfactorily illuminate the surface under examination.
7.1.4. The RVI equipment to be used depends on many aspects and varies with each inspection. Basic
equipment required on every inspection is:
7.1.5. Choice of RVI equipment as per Table 2 or equivalent and depends on access diameters,
diameters of the item to be inspected, length, environment etc. To achieve the best vision and
lighting during inspection it is of utmost importance to choose a camera with the largest diameter
possible.

8.1. It shall be determined that the light source is adequate to produce the desired luminance across the
entire area or weld surface to be inspected.
8.2. Parts, areas, welds or tubes to be tested shall be free of oil, grease, paint, or other contaminants that
might mask the discontinuity. If liquids are used to clean the component, the component shall be dry
before the testing.

9. Examination
9.1.1. For weld inspection this is to include 1” of the adjacent parent material measured from either toe
of the weld so as to include the HAZ.
9.1.2. For tube inspection, the entire length of the tube shall be inspected or as per client’s requirement.
9.2. The applicable gauges shall be used to determine dimensions of anomalies if any.
9.3. Articulation of the light, mirror or any other device being employed to assist in the inspection shall be
made to avoid shadows.
10.1. All discontinuities found shall be evaluated in accordance with the applicable code or specification as
dictated by the client. In most all instances, cracks are prohibited and shall be brought to the attention of
the client or client representative immediately.
11. Reporting
A preliminary shall be produced by the technician after each inspection to allow Customer receive translated
inspection information to decide next activity. The following minimum information shall become part of the
Site Preliminary Report:
a. Client/Owner
b. Project Name
c. Plant site location

11.2. Final Report
A written final report shall be produced after completion of project and shall include but not be limited to the
following:
b. SCOPE : Details of the unit inspected such as tube dimensions, material, and
service.
c. RESULTS : Details of defects detected and severity thereof as well as other relevant
details of the inspection.
Safety must be observed at all time and should not be restricted to the following:
a. Check medium inside – Most importantly is to check the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) or Upper
Explosive Limit (UEL) of the medium inside the item to be inspected. Refer to the camera
specifications whether it is safe to use with the surrounding medium. Use only Ex cameras for Zone
1 contained areas.
b. Check the cleanliness – Cleanliness of the item to inspect is important to obtain high quality images.
Remaining debris on the item’s surface may mask potential anomalies.
c. Check temperature – In most cases, ambient temperature is required. When in doubt check with the
control room or operations on site if they can tell the temperature of the item to be inspected.
d. Check presence of Liquids – Is the camera used waterproof? If yes, how high can the camera
withstand the pressure (bar). Muddy water may limit the visibility of the camera system thus reducing
inspection image quality and potentially damaging the camera system if not maneuverer properly.
e. Check configuration – Refer to the drawing provided. Some scopes are not possible to inspect.
Forcing to inspect a unit may cause the camera to get stuck or damaged. Make an inspection plan
on how to cover the scope entirely by using an optional camera system of not accessible.

f. Do not attempt to touch any product inside the item inspected if not sure what the product is.
g. Keep camera cables away from walkways to avoid damaging the cables. It may be necessary to
barricade the work area if afraid of unwanted interference from other personnel.
h. Do not leave the equipment soaked in product and dirty after inspection process is completed. Some
products may be corrosive if left on the camera equipment for some time. It is the inspector’s
responsibility to keep equipment clean and uncontaminated.
j. Do not perform any work activity not authorized in the permit to work such as modifying scaffolding
or mechanical work.
