CALLIGRAPHY: INTRODUCTION
 Calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting.
 This term may be derived from Greek word
“kaligraphia”
“kallos” (beauty) and “graphein”(to write) or
“graphy” (a style or method of writing or
drawing, etc. which in turn comes from “graphe”
means drawing or writing) means “beautiful
writing”.
 It implies a sure knowledge of the correct form
of letters i.e. the conventional signs by which
language can be communicated.
CALLIGRAPHY: INTRODUCTION
 Calligraphy is a visual art related to writing. It is the
design and execution of lettering with pen, ink brush or
other writing instrument.
 Calligraphy is the art of forming beautiful symbols by
hand and arranging them well.
 Calligraphy is a set of skills and techniques for
positioning and inscribing words so they show integrity,
harmony, some sort of ancestry, rhythm and creative
fire.
 Calligraphy is not just about decorated text, nor is it only
about the use of letters as ornaments.It is more than
that.
 Calligraphy is about symbols themselves being
beautifully formed and arranged.
CALLIGRAPHY: DEFINITIONS
1) Calligraphy can be defines as
“beautiful handwriting, elegant penmanship” generally in
painting beauty of line; brushwork”.
2) Calligraphy is a script that exhibits exceptional and
often self conscious artistry and aesthetic quality in design

3) Calligraphy is a skill. This skill involves touch, pressure,
hand movement, unity and that elusive quality we term
“beauty”
(V. Studley, 1991).

CALLIGRAPHY AT ELEMENTARY LEVEL

Calligraphy:

vocabulary development; also good for spiritual
development.

CALLIGRAPHY: TOOLS
 Pen and Brush: Calligraphy pens writes with nibs
that may be flat, round or pointed. For decorative
purposes, multi-nibbed pens or steel brushes can
be used.
 Writing Ink is usually water based.

 High quality Paper which has good consistency of

CALLIGRAPHY: CONCLUSION
 Calligraphy is a craft requring singularly few tools:
the writing instrument, the ink and the writing
surface are the only essentials.
 Calligraphy is an art depends on the scribe having

 Calligraphy is writing as art: It is making
meaningful marks beautiful so they show integrity,
