What is Corona virus?

family of Coronaviruses are a large viruses which may cause illness in animals or

humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections

ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases

What is a Covid-19?

COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus

(“CO”

stands for corona;

“VI” for virus;

“19” the year in which it appeared). This new virus

and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December

2019.

How Does Corona Virus Attack Your Body?

A virus infects your body by entering healthy cells. There, the invader makes copies of itself and
multiplies throughout your body.

The new coronavirus latches its spiky surface proteins to receptors on healthy cells, especially
those in your lungs.

Specifically, the viral proteins bust into cells through ACE2 receptors. Once inside, the
coronavirus hijacks healthy cells and takes command. Eventually, it kills some of the healthy
cells.

COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, starts with droplets from an infected person’s
cough, sneeze, or breath. They could be in the air or on a surface that you touch before
touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. That gives the virus a passage to the mucous membranes
in your throat. Within 2 to 14 days, your immune system may respond with symptoms
including:

Symptoms of Covid-19

Most common

*fever

*cough

*tiredness

*loss of taste or smell

Less common symptoms:

*sore throat

*headache

*aches and pains

*diarrhoea

*a rash on skin, or discolouration of fingers or toes

*red or irritated eyes

Serious symptoms:

difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

loss of speech or mobility, or confusion

chest pain

Seek immediate medical attention if you have serious symptoms. Always call
before visiting your doctor or health facility.

People with mild symptoms who are otherwise healthy should manage their
symptoms at home.

On average it takes 5–6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for
symptoms to show, however it can take up to 14 days.

'Total doses given' shows the number of vaccine doses given to people. Since some vaccines require
more than one dose, the number of fully vaccinated people is likely to be lower. 'People fully vaccinated'
shows how many people have received the full amount of doses for the COVID-19 vaccine.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PROTECT MYSELF AND PREVENT THE

SPREAD OF DISEASE?

WHAT CAN I DO TO PROTECT MYSELF AND PREVENT THE SPREAD OF DISEASE?

* Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an

alcoholbased hand rub or wash them with soap and

water, because these actions kill viruses that may be on

your hands.

*Keep a safe distance of at least 1 metre (3 feet) from

people. The virus is contained in saliva droplets and can

be transmitted by breathing at close range, particularly

when they cough, sneeze or have a fever.

*Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth, because hands

touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once

contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes,

nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body

and can make you sick.

*Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good

respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and

nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or

sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory

hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses

such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

*Avoid shaking hands and hugging, for the reasons

mentioned above. Stay at home as much as possible,

following the rules indicated by the authorities. If you

have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek

medical attention and call in advance. This will allow your

health care provider to quickly direct you to the right

health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent

spread of viruses and other infections.
