been undertaken according to the residual flexural
strength classifications given in BS EN 14651, which
complements the requirements of BS EN 14488-3
established in Section 6.11 of HS2 Specification HS2-
HS2-CV-SPE-000-014030. Additionally, EN 14487-1: 2022
for sprayed concrete allows using EN 14651 to
determine residual flexural strength limits provided in
its Table 3.

In consequence, the characterization of residual flexural

strength for sprayed concrete is to be obtained as per BS
EN 14651.

The compressive characteristic strength is to be

APPENDIX 17/3: CONCRETE SURFACE

FINISHES
1. Reference trial panels are to be produced for each group of similar assets built with similar
methods to demonstrate that the proposed methods of placing, formwork system, mould
release agent, curing system and finishing methods will provide the appropriate quality of
finish.
2. Where concrete has been specified with durability performance requirements to permit a
reduction in cover, tests shall be undertaken on the trial panels to demonstrate that the
performance requirements will be achieved.
3. The default formed finish specification for route wide bridges and culverts are as shown in the
table below unless specified otherwise in the asset specific drawings. For unformed finishes
refer to asset specific drawings.
4. Concrete surface finishes for assets other than bridges and culverts refer to asset specific
drawings.
5. Approval shall be required for the proposed location of joints and ties (that are not in rebates)
prior to concreting
6. Unless otherwise specified in the drawings, all exposed concrete edges with a sharp corner
(90° or less) shall either be chamfered at 25mm x 25mm or be rounded with a 30mm radius.
7. Unless otherwise specified in the drawings, no chamfer or radius is required for exposed
concrete edges with an obtuse angle (i.e. greater than 90°).
8. For architecturally sensitive S17 assets refer to respective asset specific architectural
specification.

2: F3 (F2) means F3 where reasonably practicable but specification of F2 finish accepted for precast boxes and UAN
components is acceptable when cast with steel shutters as they generally achieve F3 finishes.
3: F3/F4 for CDP designation means F3 finish on plane surfaces and F4 on areas with a defined pattern where fully

is required in elements with one buried face and one exposed face (e.g. tunnel segments or diaphragm

Following the requirement of HS2, all the accessible buried parts of concrete elements during the
construction, such as pilecaps, piers, abutment walls, wing walls and retaining walls, with DC3 or DC4
