1- Introduction

Anchors shall be installed for the proposed Shoring System in order to reduce the bending
moment and thereby reducing deflection on the top. Loads on each anchor and its dimensioning
are made as elaborated in the design. Following sequence shall be adopted for the installation of
anchors.

2- Material

Cement : Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)

Anchors Strands: Uncoated steel wire strands, Grade 270 as per ASTM A 416 – 99,
low Relaxing, anchor strands dia. 15.24mm

Water : Sweet Water

3- Definitions

An anchor tendon is composed of

a free / stressing, a grouted / Bearing Head
Bearing Plate
bonded length and anchor bearing
unit that is made of bearing head,
bearing plate and wedges. The
anchor tendon is prepared prior to
installation and the bearing head,
plate and wedges are placed
before stressing of the anchor. Wailer Beam

Anchor Head: Anchor head is that part of the ground anchor which transmits the thrust against the
face of the structure to be supported through steel anchor plates or other approved materials.

Tendon: this is part of the ground anchor connecting the anchor head and anchor bond length which
comprises of diameter 15.2mm strands with breaking load not less than 250 kN.

Fixed Anchor Length: this is length of anchorage over which the tensile load is transferred to the
surrounding ground. It shall be constructed outside the zones of active soil failure.

Free Anchor Length: this is the length of tendon which transmits no load to the surrounding strata.

Tendon Bond Length: this shall be the length of the tendon which is effectively bonded directly to
the grout.

Design load: this is the working load (WL) in the line of the anchor.

4- Installation Procedure

4-1 Drilling Operation

 The platform where anchors are to be

installed shall be compacted and leveled.
 Install the anchor rig machine at
approximately the same level of the
anchor head.
 Adjust the swing mast of the machine to
the required inclination to meet the
design/site requirement.
Note: The mast can be rotated in all
directions to accommodate the site
requirements.
 Boreholes are to be drilled with wash boring or dry drilling method to the required lengths.
Temporary casing is to be used where the ground is likely to collapse. Note: Extreme care shall

be taken to avoid any damage to underground structures while installing the anchor. In case if
there is any obstructions such as pile foundations, the direction of anchors can be shifted to any
adjustable mast of machine or the position of the anchors itself can be relocated. The drilling
system provided on the machine allows the operator to observe obstructions.
 After reaching the required anchor length, the prefabricated tendons will be lowered.
4-2 Tendon Fabrication

 While the plants are being mobilized and the site preparation works are being carried out, a
separate team will be involved in the tendon fabrication. Generally these shall be fabricated prior
to the commencement of the drilling operation.
 The strands used shall be 0.6’’ nominal diameter strand. All strands are to be cut to length and
tied together with tie wire at approximately 2.0 meters centers. Plastic centralizes are to be fixed
to the cable 3.0 meters centre to centre over the entire length of the cable. Free tendon length or
strand free length shall be sheathed with a suitable plastic hose. This bond length shall be
loosened (unwire) and cleaned before insertion of anchor into drilled hole. The fixed tendon
length shall also have centralizes at 3.0 meters centers to allow free flow of grout around the
strands.
 A grout hose is incorporated loosely with the bundle of strands for the grouting operation.

4-4 Grouting & Post – Grouting of Anchors

 After a clean borehole of specified length is obtained, the anchor will be placed into the empty or
grout – filled borehole. Care will be taken so that the entire hole is filled with grout.
 A primary grout pipe is to be tied to the cable and should reach within 0.5m to the bottom of the
hole.
 This grout pipe is withdrawn progressively during primary grouting. The grout is to be mixed for
approximately two minutes in a mechanical mixer and pumped into the hole through the primary
grout tube.
 Pumping shall continue until the flushing water is displaced with grout of even consistency
flowing out of the drill hole. Cement in bags and fresh water will be used for grout.
 The second grout hose is placed in the centre of tendon through the plastic centralizer and it is
used for post grouting.
 The post grouting is carried out 4 – 6 hours later after first grout that fills all void spacers by
grout mixture and provides more strength full grout between soil and grout and grout and tendon
also, the post grouting pressure will be 20 bar.
 Primary grouting must be carried out on the same day as cable installation (See mix design as
below).

Primary and Post Grout Mix Proportions:

Mix Proportion for grouting temporary anchor : Water / Cement Ratio is 0.40 – 0.45
The proportions of Grout and the minimum strength of work cubes shall comply with the following
requirement:
Range of water / cement ratio : 0.40 – 0.45
Cube crushing strength at 7 days after mixing : 18 N/mm2
Cube crushing strength at 28 days after mixing : 25N/mm2 (Minimum)
Site grout team shall take these parameters:
Water : 22.5 lt
Cement : 1 bag (50kg)
Six grout test cubes (50x50 or 100 x 100mm) shall be taken for each day of grouting. Three cubes
shall be tested on the 7th day after grouting. Stressing may be permitted if the cube strength reaches
16 N/mm2. The second set of three cubes shall be tested on the 28th day after grouting.

NOTES:-
a) Anchors shall be formed in such a manner as to ensure that no damage will be sustained by
previously formed anchors in adjacent positions. The minimum spacing between ground anchors
shall be 3 time anchor diameter.
b) The anchors shall be handled on site and inserted into boreholes without being damaged.
c) Holes for the anchors will be frilled to the required depth and diameter in the type of anchorage
zone specified.
d) Contractor shall ensure that casings for drilling are readily available for use when needed.
e) The assembled tendon will be inserted into the hole.
f) Grouting will be by tremie system through a Grout tube and the bore hole shall be filled up to the
top.
g) Anchors shall not be loaded until 7days after grouting or less than minimum strength value 18
N/mm2 obtained.

h) After the Grout strength has reached its required design strength (normally after 7 days), the
stressing anchorage is placed is then proof loaded to 1.25 time working load. The anchor will be
locked off at 1.1 times working load to allow for setting in a wedges and for time dependent load
losses to take place without adversely affecting the capacity of the anchor.
5- Testing Procedure

Prof Tests: 2 Anchors shall be subjected to routine acceptance test; test load shall be to 1.50 of WL
and carried out in stages as follows:
1st stage – stress to 0.50 WL
2nd stage – stress to 1.0 WL
3rd stage – stress to 1.50 WL
At each stage of loading, the deformation of stands is measured. After reaching the last stage (Proof
Load), the load will be kept for an observation time of 5 minutes and elongations are measured:
measurements will be taken after 1, 2, 3 and 5 minutes. As the observation time is finished, the load
will be dropped down to the initial lad and displacement is again measured.
Failure Criteria: An Anchor is deemed to have failed if:
- The anchor fails to hold the load.

Method Statement for Anchors Work 7

Al Waly Co. For Construction & Urban
(Piling Division)

- During any part of the load procedure the applied load produced a constant rate of anchor
movement.
All Anchors that have failed shall either be:
Downgraded to a load and additional anchors to be installed to restore the affected anchoring system
to original design requirements.
Accuracy of Measurement: The whole load shall be
measures on a single pressure gauge calibrated in divisions
not more than 10% of the minimum applied load on the
constructed anchors. Extension shall be measured to an
accuracy of 1mm.

6- Stressing of Anchors
Stressing will take place normally after 7 days from last
grouting. Before stressing, the bearing head and the anchor
plate will be placed. A special hydraulic jack driven
manually or by an electric – powered unit will be used to
prestress the anchors up to the design load given in
drawings. Special wedges will be placed in the holes in the
anchor head and they will keep the strands in locked
position, after the elongation corresponding to the specified
load is obtained.
The load will be read from a manometer connected to the
jack, in bars, and converted to the ton by means of a
conversion factor. The ton versus bar chart of our hydraulic
jack will be submitted prior to stressing operations. After
the strands are locked in the extended (prestressed) position, the jack will be taken out and stressing
of anchor will be completed.
