Today, much is known about bubonic plague, a dread disease which has inspired terror wherever it has
occurred. Bubonic plague is an acute and severe infection that is caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis.
Bubonic plague is spread from an infected rodent such as a mouse, a rat, or a squirrel to human by fleas. It can
spread from human to human from coughing. Plague still exists in the world, but it can be treated with
antibiotics. Its spread can be limited through control of rodents and fleas.

In the middle ages, however, information about the causes and control of bubonic plague was unknown. In the
1300s, a serious epidemic of bubonic plague struck Europe. This epidemic of bubonic plague was also known
as the Black Death. During the epidemic, bubonic plague killed one-third to one-half of the entire population of
Europe.
