Objective : Safe Unloading and Stacking of Steel Pipes.

Location : GA Ware House

Work Process :
 Steel Pipes Unloading :

 Pipe Dimensions :

 Length : 12 Meters Approx.
 Weight : 410 Kgs Approx.

 Required PPE’S :

 Safety Helmet.
 Safety Goggles
 Safety Shoe
 Cotton Gloves.
 Reflective Jacket.
 Dust Mask.

 Precautions :
 Riggers should be always in sight of the crane operator.
 Avoid entry for unauthorized person.
 Barricade / Caution tape should be provided around the working
area.
 Detailed pre job discussion to be done with proper Work Permit.
 Place at least 01 x 05Kgs dry chemical powder fire extinguisher in
the working area.
 Ensure all crane statutory and valid documents are in place.
 Ensure all the lifting tackles are tested and have valid test
certificates.
 Ensure adequate crane movement clearance available at site.
 Ensure ground soil suitable to support crane and lifted load.
 Capacity of crane at the requisite boom & max. operating radius
length is at least 125% of the weight of equipment to be handled.
 Ensured that employees are instructed not to pull the sling from
under a load when the load is resting on the sling.

 Procedure:
 The Supervisor and workmen of contractor will be trained about
the job, hazards and procedure by the Permit Issuer. The training
shall include Job specific hazard and hazards that may occur from
other jobs carried out at site. Barricade the working area with
proper barricade tape and should have more visibility.
 No one should go beyond the barricade area during the
unloading activity.
 Lifting tools & tackles should be kept in safe manner.
 Park the Trailer in safe place and apply the wheel chock and hand
brake.
 Ensure no damages to the wooden sleeper / stopper before
unlocking the latching belt.
 Remove the latching belt from the trailer and place it in a safe
place.
 Place the crane and fix the sling, C – Type hook at both the pipe
ends along with the guiding rope.
 Ensure no instructions to be provided to crane operator other the
trained Rigger.
 Guide ropes should be hold properly until the pipes get unloaded.
 Lift the pipes slowly from the trailer and move the crane towards
the dedicated area and lower the rope until properly rested on the
sand bags.

Safe Stacking Details :
 Pipes to be placed minimum 01 Feet height from the ground level.
 Maximum 07 Rows to be maintained for 8” steel pipe.
 Pipes shall be stacked on Sand Rows covered with LDPE plastic sheets of
thick gauge of 250 ±50 microns to avoid any contamination with sand &
water in case of rain. For Sand Rows, the material used to make the rows
shall be dry and free of rocks, frozen lumps or other hard objects that might
damage the pipe or coating. Care shall be taken to ensure earth does not
contact or freeze to the pipe.
o I Width of the Sand Rows – 1.5 feet minimum at Yard
o ii. Distance between 2 Sand Rows – 22 to 23 feet minimum
(considering 12 Mtr length)
o iii. Height of Sand Rows – 1.2 feet minimum
 Alternatively, Pipes may be stacked on wooden sleepers. Wooden sleeper’s
height shall be minimum 4 inch and rubber padding minimum 3mm for
coated pipes.
 Pipe interiors at placement into stockpile shall be free of debris.
 Number of support (Bearing strips – sand rows) shall be minimum 2 rows.
 Both side Stopper and Side protector to be used at yard with soft padding.

STACKING PATTERN:
 The pipe stacks are having slight tilting (2 to 5°) to drain out any rain water
from inside of the pipe. The pipe stacks are in trapezoidal form to avoid
collapsing of the pipe stack.
 The pipe shall be stacked in a staggered (nested) pattern so that each pipe
in the stack is supported across the full length of two pipes in the lower row
and care to be taken that no foreign matter is present along the contact
line.
 Rolling of pipe into a stockpile is not permitted.
 Short lengths shall be stockpiled on the top row of piles. A short length is
considered to be any length of pipe
 3 meters (10 feet) or more, shorter than the maximum pipe length in the
stockpile. (allowable pipe length 10 -
 12.5m)
 Stack ends shall be duly wedged to prevent falling of pipes.

Note :

The height of layer of the pipes shall be driven by handling pipes in safe condition
while doing hooking & unhooking of pipes.
