OBJECTIVE:
To know about the mechanics of chip formation, to analyse the tool failure, and
thermodynamics involved in metal cutting and evaluation of tool materials.

OBJECTIVE:
To impart knowledge on modern casting techniques, Design of runners, risers, gating,
casting defects and design consideration.

Shaw process, slush casting, continue casting, squeeze casting, Rheo, Thixo
casting, CLA process, H-process, Electro slag casting, Full mould process.

UNIT-II: Pouring and Gating Design:


Gating design-determination of filling time and discharge rate. Riser design and
placement-determination of dimensions of riser-residual stress.

UNIT-III: Solidification:
Solidification of metals and alloys-effect of mould material and alloy composition –
metal fluidity measurement and application of fluidity-gases in metals -degassing-
grain refinement.

UNIT-IV: Casting Defects & Testing:


Specification of castings-Inspection of castings-Analysis of casting defects-Quality
control and quality assurance.
Foundry mechanization: Principles and practice, material handling equipments: sand
handling, mould handling, core handling ,charge handling, hot metal handling,
handling of castings

UNIT-V: Casting Design:


Casting design consideration: Design problems involving thin Sections: Alloy
section, feeding through thin sections, non-uniform wall thickness, chilling effect-
effect of the mould. Design problems involving junctions-design problems involving

distribution of Stress and Strain. To know about the fracture of metals and various test
procedures.

ductility, Young’s modulus, resilience and toughness from stress strain curves, study of
stress-strain curves for different materials-true stress-strain curve: true stress at

To impart knowledge on metallurgy of welding and weldability aspects of various


metals and alloys with an emphasis on various testing method and techniques of
weldability.

UNIT-I: Fusion Welds:

Introduction to fusion welding process, heat flow in welding: temperature distribution,


heat flow equation, metallurgical effects of heat flow- TTT curve, CCT curve-Metallurgy
of fusion weld: Various zones of steel and their properties, micro structures of
weldments.

UNIT-II: Weldability of Ferrous Metals:

Carbon steels HSLA steels, Q&T steels, Cr –Mo steels, significance of carbon
equivalent. Stainless steel- classifications, Schaffler diagram, Delong diagram,
problems associated with welding of austenitic, ferritic, martensistic and duplex
stainless steels.

11254H31 METAL FORMING PROCESS


OBJECTIVE: To study about the response of materials under plastic deformation and
the various techniques for finding the stress for various metal working processes, and
the recent developments in high speed forming.
UNIT-I: Stress and Strain:
Stress-State of stress in two dimensions – three dimensions – stress tensor-Mohr’s
circles – 2D and 3D state of stress – Description of strain at a point – Mohr’s circle of
strain- Hydrostatic and stress deviator component of stress- Plasticity- flow curve-
true and true strain yield criteria for ductile loads combined stress test-plastic stress
and strain relations- Levy Mises equations-Prandyl_Resus equations.
