REININFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN (I) CEP CE-320

PROBLEM STATEMENT
The Civil Engineering Department has decided to construct a single-story Conference Hall to facilitate various
academic and professional events. The Architect, after thorough consideration of the requirements, aesthetics,
and spatial configuration, has prepared the architectural design. The floor plan, which illustrates the layout of
the hall, is provided in Figure 1. The sizes of structural members have been already fixed by the architect
which have been shown in provided figure.

Considerations:
• 3” thick PCC layer on roof
• 2” thick mud layer on roof
• Foundation depth is 4’
• qa = 2.204 kip/ft2
• fc’ = 3000 psi
• fy = 60 ksi

Requirements
• Determine the total factored load on the slab considering the weights of PCC and Mud layer and taking
uniformly service live load from ASCE 7-16. Neglect the self-weight of slab.
• Analyze and Design a. Beam (B1) for flexure and shear assuming simple support conditions.
• The middle column for axial load.
• Wall footing for the wall highlighted in figure 1
• Isolated column footing
• Provide neat and clear drawings for the structural members.

REININFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN (I) CEP CE-320

LL = 0.1 * 4
1) Factored load on slab:
DL = weight of PCC + mud layer LL = 0.4 kip/ft2

DL = γpcc*h + γmud * h Total factored load on beams is

DL = (0.14 x 3/12) + (0.11 x 2/12) Wu = 1.2(DL) + 1.6( LL)

DL = 0.053 kip/ft2 Wu = 1.34 kip/ft

Now live load is taken from table 4-1 of • Analysis for flexure:
ASCE 7-16
LL = 0.1 kip/ft2 𝑊𝑢∗𝑙 2
Mu = 𝑥 12
8
So factored area load acting o slab is:
1.34∗(30.75)2
Mu = 𝑥 12
Wu = 1.2(DL) + 1.6( LL) 8

Wu = 0.2236 kip/ft2 Mu = 1900.6 kip in

• Flexural Design:
2) Designing Beam 1:
2.614 𝑀𝑢
a = d - √𝑑2 −
• Data: 𝑓𝑐 ′ 𝑏𝑓

Designing beam as an L- beam.

2.614∗ 1900.6
• bw = 15” a = 21.5 - √21.5^2 −
3∗44.5
• h= 24”
• d= 21.5” a = 0.88 <hf ( design as rectangular beam)
• hf = 6” 𝑀𝑢 1900.6
• ln = 29.5’ = 354” As =
𝛷 𝑓𝑦
𝑎
(𝑑− )
=
0.9∗ 60 (21.5−
0.88
)
2 2
• lc/c = 30.75’ = 369”
• Sw = 8’ = 96” As = 1.67 in2 ( 3 #8 bars)
• bf = min of Asmin = 1.075 in2
6 hf + bw = 51”
Sw/2+ bw = 63” Asmax = 4.355 in2
ln /12+ bw = 44.5”
• Drafting:
• Load on beam:
Load acting on beam is from slab (one way)
and the self weight of beam.

DL = DL of slab * l/2 + γc*A

DL = (0.053*4) + ( 0.15 x (15 ∗ 24⁄144))

DL = 0.587 kip/ft2
LL = LLof slab * l/2

• Capacity check: a=
As 𝑓𝑦
=
3(0.79)( 60)
d = 24-1.5 – 3/8 – 0.5 = 21.625” 0.85 𝑓𝑐 ′ 𝑏𝑓 0.85(3)(44.5)

a = 1.25 in2 Now mathematically there is no

reinforcement required but we will provide
𝛷Mn = 𝛷As fy (d-a/2)
minimum reinforcement.
𝛷Mn = 0.9*3*0.79(21.625- 1.25/2)
Amin = 0..01 Ag = 0.01(152)
𝜱Mn = 2687.58 kip in > Mu
Amin = 2.25 in2 ( 6 # 6 bars )
The flexural design is OK
• For Ties:
• Analysis for shear: Let #3 bar is being used for ties;
As Wu = 1.34 kip / ft
Spacing will be min of:
So maximum shear will be at the supports, Au fy
that is a) = 21.42”
0.75 √𝑓𝑐 ′ 𝑏
Vu = Wu * ln/2 = 1.34(30.75/2) Au fy
b) = 17.6”
50 𝑏
Vu = 20.60 kip c) 48 dt = 18”
d) 16 dm = 12”
Now
e) Least dimension = 15”
𝛷Vc = 𝛷2 √fc’ d = 0.75*2*√3000 * 21.625
• Drafting:
𝜱Vc = 26.6 kip > Vu

no stirrups needed but still providing #3 @

12” c/c ( already provided )

3) Middle column for axial load:

Column dimensions = 15” x 15”

• For main bars

Two simply supported beams rest here , so
4) Wall footing:
the reaction from both beams is actually the
axial load acting on the column that is ; • Data:
h = 12”
Pu = 2* Wu * ln/2 = 1.34(30.75)
γsoil = 0.1 kip/ft2
Pu = 41.2 kips
γwall = 0.12 kip/ft2
Now;
t = 9”= 0.75’
Pu = 𝛷𝛼 ( 0.85 fc’ (Ag -As) + fy As )
z= 4’
By putting values
let height of wall is 16’
As = -8.6 in2

• Loads acting : Now 𝛷Vc = 𝛷2 √fc’ d = 0.75*2*√3000 *

DL = DL of slab on wall + self-weight of 8.75
wall 𝜱Vc = 8.6 kip > Vu
DL = 0.053(8+20)/2 + 0.12(0.75’)(16’) Now
DLs = 2.2 kip/ft Mu = (qu k2 *12)/2 = 1.61*1.1252*6

LL = LL of slab = 0.1(8+20)/2 Mu = 12.22 kip in

LLs = 1.4 kip/ft 2.614 𝑀𝑢

a = d - √𝑑2 −
𝑓𝑐 ′ 𝑏𝑓
Now total service load is
2.614∗ 12.22
Ps= DL+LL a = 8.75 -√8.75^2 −
3∗12
Ps = 3.6 kip/ft a = 0.05”
Total factored load is 𝑀𝑢 12.22
As = 𝑎 = 0.05
𝛷 𝑓𝑦 (𝑑− ) 0.9∗ 60 (8.75− )
2 2
Pu = 1.2(DL)+1.6(LL)
As = 0.02 in2
Pu = 4.85 kip/ft
Asmin = 00018 bh = 0.0018(12*12)
• For soil failure:
Asmin = 0.26 in2 ( provide As min)
Effective bearing capacity is given by:
Spacing = 0.2(12) / 0.26
qe = qa - γc*h – γs*(z-h)
Spacing ( main bars) = 9”c/c
by putting values we get
Other direction = As min = 0.26 * 3
qe = 1.754 kip/ft2 This implies that As = 0.78 in2 ( 4 #4 bars)
now for width Sm <= min of
B = Ps/qe = 2.05’ • 5h = 60”
• 18” ( OK)
B = 3’
Now qu = Pu/ B
• Drafting:

qu = 1.61 kip/ft2

• For structure failure:

k = (B-t)/2 = (3-0.75)/2
k = 1.125’
if #4 bar is used so
d = 12-3-4/16 = 8.75”
Vu = qu ( k-d) = 1.61( 1.125 – 8.75/12)
Vu = 0.63 kip

5) Design of column footing: Vup = 34.38 kip

• Loads: Punching shear capacity

DLs = DLs on column by beam + self
𝛷Vcp = 𝛷4 √fc’ d bo /1000
weight of column
DLs = 2* 0.587* 30.75/2 + 0.15* 𝛷Vcp = 0.75*4*√3000 * 11.75*107/1000
(15/12)2*16’ 𝜱Vcp = 206.58 kip > Vu so depth is OK
DLs = 21.8 kip Mu = (qu k2 *B*12)/2 = 2.25*1.6252*4.5*6
LLs = 2*0.4* 30.75/2 Mu = 160.41 kip in
LLs = 12.3 kips 2.614 𝑀𝑢
a = d - √𝑑2 −
𝑓𝑐 ′ 𝑏𝑓
Ps = 34.1 kips
Pu = 45.7 kips 2.614∗ 160.41
a = 11.75 -√11.75^2 −
3∗4.5∗12
• For soil failure:
Let h = 15” a = 0.11”
𝑀𝑢 160.41
Effective bearing capacity is given by: As = 𝑎 = 0.11
𝛷 𝑓𝑦 (𝑑− ) 0.9∗ 60 (11.75− )
2 2
qe = qa - γc*h – γs*(z-h)
As = 0.25 in2
by putting values we get
Asmin = 00018 bh = 0.0018(4.5*12*15)
qe = 1.74 kip/ft2
Asmin = 1.46 in2 ( provide As min)
area required
So both bars will have area As min
A = Ps/qe = 19.59ft2
N = 1.46/0.2 = 8 #4 bars equally spaced
A = 4.5’ x 4.5 ‘ on both directions.
Now qu = Pu/ A • Drafting :
qu = 2.25 kip/ft2

• For structure failure:

d = 15 – 3 – 4/8 = 11.5”
bo = 4 (c + d) = 107 “
Ap = (c+d)2 = 715.56 in2
k = (B-c)/2 = 1.625’
Now punching demand
Vup = qu( B2 – (c+d)2/144)
Vup = 2.25( 4.52 – 715.56/144)
