The Objectives Of The Organisation Are:

• Organise and manage accreditation and registration of Academic Performance Analysts and Consultant
Performance Analysts of sport (i.e. a form of quality assurance)

• Gather and disseminating information, knowledge and materials on performance analysis of sport

• Providing a forum for the exchange of ideas

• Bridging the gap between researchers and practitioners

• Counselling organisations in questions of performance analysis of sport

Our analysis should be designed in such a way as to provide us with the context we need
to better understand performance in relation to identified key performance objectives

“The stats say Player B had 92% of efficiency in his passing.’ But
the stats don’t say that player only made passes of two metres,
they don’t say that the player was a centre-back who only passed
to the other centre-back. Or a No 6 who only passed to a No 8.

And the guy that had 65% of efficiency on his pass is the guy that
made the assist, is the guy that makes the adept passes, is the
guy that makes 60-metre passes to change the direction of the
play. So the stats many, many times are like an incredible piece of
meat or fish but badly cooked.”

Context Is EVERYTHING!
» We know for example that; no two Passes are the same, no two Chances
are the same.

» We add value by adding context.

PASSING CHANCES (ATTEMPTS ON GOAL)

Purpose?: Keep Possession, Penetrate (Through),
- Angle?
Penetrate (Around), move opposition players etc.
- Defensive Pressure?
- Shot Clarity?
Direction?: Forward, Sideways, Backwards
- Type of Assist?

Level of Pressure?: (for Passer & Receiver)
– High, Medium, Low, No Pressure

There is a tendency to approach our analysis from the perspective of the ‘broad’ context of a 90 minute game -- without
taking into consideration the important changes in context during that game. This dilutes the value of our analysis.

» GAME STATE: E.g. Winning, Losing, Tied?

» AREA (Where?): E.g. Win/Lose Possession

» TIME (When?): Break analysis down by Time Period

» SHAPE/TACTICS: The impact of changes in strategy?

» VENUE: Home, Away, Neutral?

» QUALITY OF OPPOSITION: Better, Equal, Poorer.

» DISMISSALS: 11 v 10, 10 v 11

» COMPETITION TYPE: League/Conference, Play-Off, Cup?

The ‘What’: What aspect(s) of performance do you want to analyse?

The ‘Who’? Who do you want your analysis to involve?

The Where? Where on the pitch is it taking place?


‘Context’
The How? What other Criteria would add value and understanding?

The When? When did this take place?

The Outcome? What are the potential outcomes of that action?

Task…
We want to better understand the nature of the goals that Manchester City
scored last season. Your task is to:

1. Identify those factors/aspects that you are interested in measuring in relation to the nature of the goals they
scored.

2. Decide within your group who is responsible for measuring each specific area.

3. Create the Notational Analysis (Pen/Paper) tools that you are going to use to gather the information that you
are responsible for.

4. Analyse the video and then collate your data. Analyse the first 35 goals.

5. Discuss as a small group and identify the INSIGHTS that you have gleaned from your group analysis.

6. Present back to the group (max 2 minutes).
