Sri Kumaran Children’s Home - CBSE

I Terminal Examination 2019 - 2020

Class: XI Subject : Biology Marks: 70
Date: 13.09.2019 Subject Code : 044 Time: 3 Hrs.
General Instructions :
1. All questions are compulsory.
2. Draw diagrams wherever necessary.

SECTION – A [1x5=5]

1. Differentiate between a zoospore and zygospore.

2. What are (a) phasmids (b) plasmids

3. Why are some animals diploblastic while others are triploblastic during the embryonic
development?

4. What are SAT chromosomes? How many SAT chromosomes can be found in the
(a) male gamete of volvox (b) zygospore of chlamydomonas?

5. What are (a) leucoplast (b) tonoplast ?

SECTION – B [2x7=14]
1. Differentiate between intracellular, extracellular and extracorporal digestion. Give significance
of each type with an example.
2. What are neoteny and paedogenesis? Explain with a suitable example.
3. Describe the structure of Cycas ovule ? What are the primitive and advanced features
observed?
4. Describe the structure of diatom. How does it reproduce asexually? When do they switch over
to sexual mode of reproduction?
5. Pearls and corals are formed due to secretions in certain animal groups. How do they differ in
their formation?Do they differ in their compositon? Name the groups of animals which
contribute for their formation.
6. (a) How was the fluid nature of plasma membrane proved experimentally?Give ONLY
diagrammatic representation.
(b) Why do the echinoderms, the highly advanced invertebrates exhibit radial symmetry while
many lower groups show bilateral symmetry.
7. The membrane lost during cell eating / cell drinking is gained during cell vomiting. Explain
the statement. What does it hint about the compostion of membranes of the cell organelles?

SECTION – C [3x12=36]

1. Demonstrate osmosis phenomenon with the help of thistle funnel experiment. What would
happen if the thistle funnel has water while the beaker has salt solution? Will your observe
reverse osmosis? Justify your answer.

2. What is coelome? Describe various types. Give the significance of each type with a suitable
example.
3. Describe the structure of endoplasmic reticulum and golgi complex. Explain how they work
together in the secretion of gastric enzymes?
4. Describe the digestive system of cockroach. Why is it considered highly advanced when
compared to that in earth worm?
5. What is meant by enzyme inhibition? Explain the various types. Suggest the solutions to
overcome each type of inhibiton.
6. Bring out the differences between Chondrichthyes and osteichthyes.
7. What are proteins? How are they formed? Describe the various steps in the formation of three
dimensional structure of a protein.
8. What are (a) gemmules (b) gemmae (c) prions
(d) plasmodium (multicellular) (e) monograph (f) mycobiont
9. Describe the structure of mitochondria with the help of neat labelled diagram. Why are they
considered as “cells within cells”? Give their significance in the cell metabolism.
10. What is prothallus? Describe the structure and development.
11. Bring out the differences between Transpiration and Guttation.
12. Give reasons for the following:
(a) Prototherians are connecting links between reptiles and mammals.
(b) Double circulation in amphibians is considered more advanced than single circulation in
fishes though mixed blood is pumped to the tissues in the former while pure oxygenated
blood is supplied to tissues in the latter.
(c) Metabolism in annelids is less compared to arthropods though the former group has closed
circulatory system while there is open circulatory system in arthropods.

SECTION – D [3x5=15]

1. What is alternation of generations? Explain with the help of life cycle of Funaria.
2. (a) Differentiate between metaphase of mitosis and metaphase – I of meiosis. What would
happen if tubulin fails to undergo polymerization in both cases?
(b) What triggers the cell to undergo mitosis and meiosis?
(c) “Mitosis leads to formation of gametes.” Justify the statement with a suitable example.
3. Explain the structure of DNA with the help of neat labeled diagrams and list the salient
features.

******Best of Luck******
