4.2.3.4 Axial Scan
Axial scans are the normal CT mode of slice-by-slice scanning while the
Patient Table is motionless during the exposure, and the tube rotates around
the patient while radiating rays. If multi layers scan is needed, the back couch
will move to the position of next layer automatically according to the operator’s
setting, after one layer is completed till all the axial scan operation is
completed.
The axial scan operation can be performed after the pilot scan is completed,
and start after positioning is carried out on the film image, or it can be
performed directly after the scan part is determined by laser localizer without
the pilot scan process.
4.2.3.5 Spiral Scan
During spiral scan process, the X-ray tube rotates continuously to produce
X-ray beam and the patient table is incrementing continuously in the axial
direction. So the X-ray track in the scanning area is a spiral movement for the
patient under inspection.
The spiral scan operation can be performed after the pilot scan is completed,
and start after positioning is carried out on the film image, or it can be
performed directly after the scan part is determined by laser localizer without
the pilot scan process.
4.2.3.6 Reinforced and Scan Triggering
If user set the【Trigger】 parameter of a scan series (non-pilot series) as
Manual to perform the manual scan. Namely, the operators can control the
start time of rays discharging time. After the scan preparation is completed, the
information prompt box for discharging rays by manual is displayed before the
X-ray exposure. There is a certain limit for manual operation: a time display is
shown on the top from zero time with the unit as second after the prompt box
pops up. After the time exceeds 180 seconds, the scan is aborted
automatically if it is not started. Click【Start Scan】in 180 seconds, the rays
discharging operation is started if the Auto Voice item is not selected. If the
Auto Voice item is selected, the scan operation is started after the
corresponding voice tips are sent out.
Select the Contrast Scan from the Trigger list, the Contrast label is active, refer

z According to the diagnosis requirements, related values can be selected or
inputted from the scan parameters.
z 【Thickness】:Image Reconstruction Thickness, It is used to specify the
number of reconstruction layers for every circle of scan and the thickness
of reconstruction layers. For single row CT scan, the setting is 1×(Slice
Thickness) all the time; for dual CT scan, the default value is 2×(Slice
Thickness), and another option is always 1×(2×Slice Thickness).
z 【FOV】:The image construction view. The default value is the last
inputted value with the range of 5cm-50cm.
z 【Filter】:The selection range is 0~1. Through the alteration of filter
parameters, the sharpness and noise level of reconstructed images can be
adjusted. The noise in the image increase as the sharpness of the image
increases, and vice versa. In general, the low contrast resolution
decreases as the spatial resolution (and the image noise) increase.
z 【Center X】:The unit is mm. The positive direction is from the left side to
the right side of the patient, and the rotation centre is coordinate origin.
Through the alteration on 【Central Coordinate X】【 , Central Coordinate Y】
and【FOV】, only the interested area can be reconstructed.
z 【Center Y】:The unit is mm. The positive direction is from the back (P) of
the patient to the front side (A) of the patient, and the rotation centre is
coordinate origin.
z 【Start Pos.】:Start Position, It is a parameter of the spiral scan. The
position of the first layer is defined as zero position, the parameter means
the initial position towards the zero position related to the image
reconstruction.
z 【Scan Distance】: It is a parameter of the spiral scan which gives the
region covered by the Helix. The parameter is given by the system and is
not editable.
z 【No. Slice】:As a parameter of the spiral scan, it set the number of layers
expected for each reconstruction.
z 【Interval】: It is used to set the distance between two consecutive
reconstructed slices.

1. CTDI Phantoms
The CTDI dosimetry phantoms are right circular cylinders of polymethyl
methacrylate (lucite). The density of these phantoms is 1.19 g/cm3. The head
phantom measures 16 cm in diameter and the body phantom has a diameter of
32 cm. The length of each phantom is 15 cm.
The phantom provides means for the placement of dosimeter(s) along its axis
of rotation and along a line parallel to the axis of rotation, 1.0 cm from the outer
surface and within the phantom. The dosimeters are TLD crystals (3.2 mm x
3.2 mm x 0.9 mm) or 10 cm long pencil ionization chamber.
2. CTDI Definition
Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDI) is the integral of the dose profile
along a line perpendicular to the tomographic plane divided by the product of
the nominal tomography section thickness and the number of tomograms
produced in a single scan, as follows:
1 +50mm
nT ∫-50mm
CTDI100 = D(z)dz
where:
D (z)=Dose to Air (CTDI100) at position z
T = Nominal tomographic section thickness

n = Number of tomograms produced in a single scan
The CTDI definition assumes that for a multiple tomogram system the scan
increment between adjacent slices is nT.
Note:
1) The diameter of head phantom is 16 cm.
2) The diameter of body phantom is 32 cm
3) The material of phantom is Perspex.

The impulse response and the tomographic thickness (slice thickness) are not
dependent upon the phantom dimensions. They are therefore measured on the
physics layer of the system phantom.
The phantom physics layer diameter is 200 mm diameter with PVC shell. The
impulse response is measured on a 0.18 mm copper wire using the Impulse
Response program.
The MTF curve is calculated from the impulse response on a separate
computer.
The maximum deviation of the MTF curve is ± 15%.
3. Tomographic Thickness Measurement
In the phantom shown in the Image Performance Quality Assurance chapter,
two aluminium strips at 45 deg. give projections of the sensitivity profile in the
image plane.
The profiles of the projections are equivalent to the sensitivity profiles, and the
FWHM of the profile is the nominal tomographic thickness.
The profile is measured by the Slice Width program.
The maximum deviation of the sensitivity profiles is 20%.
Notes: The 0.8 mm and 1.0 mm results appear wider than actual
with the ramp method due to the limited resolution of the

X-ray and gamma rays are dangerous to both operator and others in the
vicinity unless established safe exposure procedures are strictly observed.
The useful and scattered beams can produce serious or fatal bodily injuries to
patients and persons in the surrounding area if used by an unskilled operator.
Adequate precautions must always be taken to avoid exposure to the useful
beam, as well as to leakage radiation from within the source housing or to
scattered radiation resulting from passage of radiation through matter.
Those authorized to operate, participate in or supervise the operation of the
equipment must be thoroughly familiar and comply completely with the current
established safe exposure factors and procedures described in publications,
such as the “Diagnostic X-ray systems and their major components,” section of
subchapter J of Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, and the National
Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP) No 102, “Medical X-ray and gamma
ray protection for energies up to 10 MEV equipment design and use,” as
revised or replaced in the future.
In addition, operators are strongly urged to acquaint themselves with the
current recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological
Protection, and in the United States, with those of the US National Council for
Radiological Protection.

7.9.3 Technique Factors – Maximum Deviations
1. X-Ray Tube Voltage
The X-ray voltage is displayed on the Operator Console Screen. The actual
X-ray voltage during scan is within ± 10% of the displayed value, which is in
the range of 80 to 140 kV.
The X-ray voltage is measured on a resistive divider, which is calibrated during
the manufacturing process.
2. X-Ray Tube Current – Exposure Time Product
The actual current – exposure time product (in mAs) during a scan is within
± 30% of the value displayed on the Operator Workstation screen. The tube
current – exposure time product is measured by a dosimeter calibrated in mAs.
The dosimeter is calibrated by measuring the tube anode current on Barracuda
between X-ray ON and OFF during a long exposure.

The system has two laser localizers on the gantry and it assists operator to
position the patient. Each localizer generates two perpendicular laser beams
The localization precision of the laser localizer is ± 1mm.
If one image generate during a circle, the laser localizer indicate the
constructed image position
If two images generate during a circle, the laser localizer indicate the middle
position of these two images.

The SD, as displayed on the screen, is divided, by (AV + 1000) and multiplied
by 100 to transform the CT numbers to a percentage of the material
absorption.
The region of interest of image can be selected by the measuring tool of CT
value in the interface of the console and the CT number of the ROI (region of
interest) selected is calculated from the average CT value of all pixels in the
ROI. The CT mean number of every pixel, as displayed on the screen, is
