Now we will have a look on Most commonly Used Terms

• TDS (Total Dissolved Solids).
It refers to all the solid substances that are dissolved in water. It includes minerals, salts,
metals, and other particles that are in a dissolved form
• TSS (Total Suspended Solids).
It refers to the solid particles that are suspended in water and can be seen by naked eye.
• BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand).
As it is clear from its abbreviation that it is the oxygen required by organic matter during
biological process. Or simply it indicates the number of bacteria or Organism in the
wastewater.
• COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand).
It is basically the Oxygen required by inorganic matter present in the wastewater to treat
it. Or very simply it is the measure of inorganic matter in the wastewater
• MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids).
It is used to measure the concentration of suspended solids in the mixed liquor of an
activated sludge system.
Let’s have a look on general range of these values
For sewage water:
• COD: 400-600 mg/L
• BOD: 200-300 mg/L
• TSS: 200-300 mg/L
• pH: 6-9
For Food industrial waste water:
• COD: 1,000-20,000 mg/L
• BOD: 500-4000 mg/L
• TSS: 200-300 mg/L
• pH: 2-12
Municipality Discharge Standards for Irrigation (for drip)
Parameters Municipality Discharge Almasa Treated water
Standards (ppm) quality
COD <100 2.7
BOD <20 2.9
TSS <50 5
pH 6-9 6-7
Ammonium Nitrogen <5 2

The impact of COD and BOD on our Treatment process.

• If COD very high and BOD very low. For example, if The COD=10,000 and BOD= 500.
We cannot Treat this wastewater
• Just Remember that if BOD is almost 1/3rd to 1/2 of COD than we can treat the
wastewater easily.
• Because you know this process includes the biological process in which the bacteria
consume the organic matter present in the wastewater so it’s always better to have higher
level of BOD.
Important conversions.
• 1 USG (US. Gallons) = 3.7L
• 1 Imperial gallons = 4.6L
• 1 cubic meter of water= 264 USG of water
• 1 cubic meter of water= 1000L of water
• Generally, we assume that 1 person consumes 150L of water each day
General conversions
• There are two types of tanker Either 5000USG Tanker and 10,000USG Tanker
• A 5000USG tanker can carry almost 18.9 cubic meter
• A 10,000USG tanker can carry almost 37.8 cubic meter
• For example, if we have a Labour Camp having 500 people they will consume
500 *150L = 75000 Liter of Water and in cubic meter it is 75 cubic meter (75000/1000).
About Almasa’ s MBR
• Design flow rate of Almasa’ s MBR is 10 L/m².H (it means from 1 square meter area of
MBR 10L of water can pass in 1 Hour)
• ID/OD of membrane = 2.0/2.1 mm (inner diameter and outer diameter)
• Membrane filtration precision= 0.04-0.10 𝜇m
• We make three Heights of MBR
▪ 1 meter (Each curtain has an area of 10 m²)
▪ 1.5 meter (Each curtain has an area of 15 m²)
▪ 2 meters (Each curtain have an area of 20 m²)
• To treat Wastewater by using MBR TDS< 5000 mg/L. it is possible but it will be a
special design.
• It can reduce TSS to less than 2 mg/L.
• One MBR Noodle can carry a weight of 15 KG. (Tensile Strength)
• Material of MBR is PVDF (polyvinylidene Fluoride)
• Life of Almasa’ s MBR is 6-8 years (3 years warranty)

What is the Processes or methods of wastewater Treatment?

Wastewater treatment involves the removal of contaminants from wastewater to make it safe for
discharge into the environment or for reuse.
1. Physical Treatment:
• Screening: Removes large solids and debris.
• Sedimentation: Allows particles to settle, separating them from water.
2. Chemical Treatment:
• Coagulation and Flocculation: Chemicals are added to clump small particles
together for easier removal.
• Chemical Precipitation: Formation of solid particles that can be removed through
sedimentation.
3. Biological Treatment:
• Activated Sludge Process: Uses microorganisms to break down organic matter.
• Trickling Filters: Wastewater is trickled over microbial-coated surfaces for
treatment.
4. Advanced Treatment:
• Membrane Filtration: Uses membranes to separate particles and microorganisms.
• Reverse Osmosis: Forces water through a semipermeable membrane to remove
impurities.
• UV Disinfection: Ultraviolet light is used to kill or inactivate pathogens.
5. Disinfection:
• Chlorination: Addition of chlorine to kill bacteria and pathogens.
• Ozonation: Use of ozone for disinfection.
• UV Disinfection: Ultraviolet light inactivates microorganisms.
Frequently used Treatment Technologies
1. MBBR - Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor
2. MBR - Membrane Bioreactor
3. RBC - Rotating Biological Contactor
4. SBR - Sequential Batch Reactor
5. DAF - Dissolved Air Flotation

How many types of membrane are available and their filtration precision?
1. Microfiltration (MF): Filters particles of 0.1 to 10 micrometers.
2. Ultrafiltration (UF): Filters particles of 0.001 to 0.1 micrometers.
3. Nanofiltration (NF): Filters particles of 0.001 to 0.01 micrometers.
4. Reverse Osmosis (RO): Filters particles below 0.001 micrometers.
What is the size of Bacteria, Virus and Protein?
1. Bacteria (Size: 1 to 30 micrometers).
2. Proteins (Size: 1 to 10 nanometers)
3. Viruses (Size: 20 to 300 nanometers)
How to generally calculate the price of a STP plant?
CMD * 5 * 90 (MBR price per square meter) * 3.5
For example, a costumer having total capacity is 500CMD
500*5*90*3.5=787,500AED (But remember this calculation is only for large scale plants)

What is RO treatment?
RO is for desalination. To remove the salt from clean water. And to reduce the TDS. Basically,
from Clear water to clearer water
Common Applications:
• RO treatment is widely used for desalination of seawater, making it suitable for drinking
and irrigation.
• It's commonly employed in residential water purification systems to enhance drinking
water quality.
• Industrial processes, such as pharmaceutical production and electronics manufacturing,
often utilize RO for water purification.
Important information for making RO proposal
• Water source (Bore well water, Wastewater, sea water)
• RO has rejected water so must have Solution for disposal of treatment.
• Capacity
• Recovery 30-70%

5|Page
Almasa Environmental Solutions L.L.C

• Typical raw water TDS (5000ppm) of bore well water. The RO output water will have a
TDS around 500ppm and Rejected water have a TDS around 10,000ppm
Effective Removal: RO systems can remove a wide range of impurities, including bacteria,
viruses, salts, and minerals.
• Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the optimal performance of RO systems,
including membrane cleaning and replacement.
• Life of RO membrane depending upon the quality of water varies between 2-3 years
