2 Introduction

2.1 What is the X62T-HART?

The X62T is a Tank Thermometer transmitter based on the X62U multi-input HART
transmitter. The X62U is a modern micro controller based transmitter design with
inputs that are software configurable for precision resistor, thermocouple and
capacitive sensor inputs.

Both enclosure entry openings of the X62T-HART (in deviation from the X62T
Installation Guide PN 500013) are PG16:

• The cable entry allows a PG16 cable gland or adapter to be used (not supplied).
• The MRT entry is also PG16 with positioning hole compatible to the original
Enraf MRT G1/2-G1/2 adapter. If you are upgrading from a Enraf 862 MIR this
adapter will already be glued on top of the 863 MRT. In a new installation or
when replacing a Enraf 762 VITO you will require a Exalon Delft X62T-G1/2-M/F
adapter (sold separately).

2 versions of the X62T-HART enclosure can be selected: X62T-HART/H and X62T-

HART/W:
/H This is the default enclosure.
/W In certain installations with rigid conduits it may be difficult to mirror the
external connections. In this case the /W enclosure can be applied. Internally
the probe wires will cross the host connection wires.
As the probe wires and host wires are 2 different Intrinsically Safe circuits they
MUST be kept isolated with a total of > 0.5mm solid isolation. An additional
isolation sleeve (not supplied) may be needed to increase solid isolation. An
additional isolation sleeve (not supplied) may be needed to increase solid
isolation.

3.2.5 Lightning protection

The field bus terminals of the X62T are floating except for a 90V gas arrester. If the
field wiring isolation needs to be tested the internal wire from terminal CN1-2 and
CN1-4 (see Figure 5: Connection of MRT and VITO MPT probes) to the enclosure may
need to be temporarily disconnected.

3.2.6 Wiring inside the enclosure

Supply and input circuits are separate Intrinsically safe circuits. Keep wiring
separated with a minimum distance of 6 mm. When necessary use a suitable cable
binder (not supplied) or isolation sleeve.

3.2.7 Supply cable

Follow local regulations for routing of I.S. wiring. Use shielded twisted pair, loop
resistance < 50Ω. Using Co / Lo from the gauge:
Cc ≤ Co – 5nF, Lc ≤ Lo.

Note
Use metallic cable glands (M16/EMC/IP68) to provide good contact
between cable shield and X62T Interface housing.
The shield of the cable shall be connected inside the cable gland
and connected to ground at both ends of the cable.

Supported element types are Pt100, Cu90 and Ni191. If you wish to use an element
with another curve please contact Exalon Delft.

Both spot elements as well as averaging elements are supported.

4.2 Determine mechanical dimensions

4.2.1 Mechanical dimensions of MRT/MPT probes

For the 361 probes mechanical dimensions can be determined from the probe type
identification plate (see Table 3: Mechanical dimensions for MPT probes ).
4 Verification before installation Page 13 of 44

For an MRT you can check the number of elements (see Table 4: 863 MRT: Element
Position/Length (m) from bottom end of probe) and the colors of the wires (see Table
7: MRT and MPT probe connections).

You will need these dimensions to configure the temperature transmitter correctly.

4.2.2 Mechanical dimensions of MTT probes

Mechanical dimensions can be determined from the MTT probe type identification
plate. You will need these dimensions to configure the gauge correctly.
4 Verification before installation Page 15 of 44

• The sensitive length is always measured from the position of the Pt100 to the
highest element. This will be needed to configure item MK in the gauge.
• The lowest spot position is measured from the bottom of the probe to the
center of the lowest spot element. This will be needed to configure item MO in
the gauge. Item MO is configured as the height from Tank Zero to the position
of the lowest element. As a result, the height from tank zero to the bottom of
the MTT needs to be added to the position of the lowest spot element (see
Table 5: Mechanical dimensions).

5 Installation

5.1 Powering the X62T-HART

The X62 can be configured to draw a constant current of either 4 mA or 15 mA. When
programmed with X62T-HART firmware preferably the low current mode should be
selected (SW1 BROWN in OFF position).

In low current mode the X62 requires a voltage between 12V and 24V on the
terminals CN1-1 and CN1-3 and larger than 14V in high current mode.

5.2 Mechanical connection

In case of an upgrade from 862 MIR to X62T-HART an Enraf G1/2-G1/2 M/F adapter
may already be installed on the adjusting pipe. This will be compatible with the X62T
enclosure and does not need to be replaced if the O-ring is in good condition.

• Place the empty X62T enclosure on top of the adapter (1) carefully positioning
the position pin (3) in the enclosure blind hole.
• Secure the X62T enclosure using the half height G1/2 hexagon nut (4) and
supplied shake proof washer until the O-ring is fully compressed and the
enclosure will not be able to move.
• Turn the SS G1/2 hexagon nut onto the adjusting pipe (2) until 50mm of thread
is free and place the SS shake proof washer.
• Feed the probe wiring through the G1/2-G1/2 M/F adapter (1).
5 Installation Page 19 of 44

• Apply a suitable thread locking pipe sealant on the first 25mm of the probe
adjusting pipe (2).
• Turn the adapter (1) tightly onto the adjusting pipe (2) using a wrench on the
adapter (3). Tighten the SS hex nut.

Caution
Do not attempt to tighten by applying force to the enclosure as this
will damage the positioning pin.

5.3 Electrical connection of Enraf MRT and MPT probes

Connect the MRT or VITO MPT probes according to Figure 5: Connection of MRT and
VITO MPT probes and Table 7: MRT and MPT probe connections. The X62T-HART
allows to connect up to 14 elements.

Caution
Discharge tools to the tank before bringing into contact with the
X62 terminals to prevent ESD (electrostatic discharges). Then FIRST
connect one Ground wire to terminal 1 on CN3. Damage due to
ESD related events are not covered by the warranty.

Note
The X62T-HART will operate with unused inputs left floating.
However this may cause tiny temperature offsets on used inputs,
this causes EMC degration.

Due to the number of terminals the maximum number of elements for a 3-Wire
Individual sense probe is 9, for a 3-Wire Common Sense probe it is 17 and for a 4-
Wire probe it is 6.

Unused terminals should be connected to ground to prevent noise problems. All GND
terminals are the same ground and it does not matter which are used.

5.5 The X62T Configuration Switches

The X62T has 4 switches (DIP switches) located at the top side. These switches can be
shifted to their On or Off position. The On position is when the switch is shifted to
the direction where the numbers are printed. The Off position is when the switch is
shifted to the direction where the text "OFF" is printed.

Switch Description
1 Brown This switch configures the Current Mode of the X62T. For X62T-HART this switch
can be in On position for High Current Mode or Off position for Low Current
Mode
2 Red This switch is used to set the write protected mode. Set in On position for Write
protected Mode or Off position for Not Protected Mode
3 Orange This switch is reserved and must always be in Off position.
4 Yellow This switch is used to configure order detection for an MTT probe. See below.

5.6 Electrical connection MTT, VITO MTT or VITO LT temperature

• Connect the MTT or VITO MTT probes according to Figure 11: Connection of
MTT or VITO MTT probes.
• Connect VITO LT probes according to Figure 12: Connection of VITO LT probes.

Caution
Discharge tools to the tank before bringing into contact with the
X62 terminals to prevent ESD (electrostatic discharges). Then FIRST
connect one BROWN wire to terminal 3 on CN3. Damage due to
ESD related events are not covered by the warranty.

Connect blue wires to the terminals with blue color in the drawing, yellow to the
yellow terminal, etc.:
5 Installation Page 25 of 44

• If an orange wire is present connect this to terminal 19 of CN3 and set SW2
RED to ON.
• In case of a VITO LT probe unused BLUE inputs on terminal 7 – 12 on CN3
should be connected to terminal 4 (GND) on CN3.

Note
The X62T-HART will operate with unused inputs left floating.
However this may cause tiny temperature offsets on used inputs,
startup time will be increased and EMC degraded.

5.6.1 Switching between VITO-MTT and VITO-LT probes

VITO-LT probes have less spot temperatures than VITO-MTT probes (9 vs. 16). This
has been achieved by reducing the number of BLUE wires.

For the X62T-HART measuring LT probes this means the yellow wire is still to be
connected to terminal 5 and terminal 6 – 12 are not used for temperature
measurement. Order and type of probe (MTT or LT) is stored in the X62T memory.

5.6.2 Steps to Setup the X62T-HART for use with an MTT or VITO MTT/LT
• Set switch SW1 Brown in the Off position to enable low current mode.
• Set switch SW2 Red in the Off position so write protection is off.
• Verify switch SW3 Orange is in the Off position.
• Set switch SW4 Yellow in the On position to enable order detection of the
thermocouples. See the next section for details.
• Turn power of X62T on. Wait for 3 minutes minimum to perform the order
detection.
• Turn power of X62T off and set switch SW4 Yellow in Off position.

5.6.3 Order Detection of Thermocouples

Note
Order Detection is only applicable when the X62T-HART is
configured to have an VITO/MTT or VITO/MTT LT probe.

The Blue thermocouples of the MTT or VITO MTT/LT can be connected in any order.
Using the Yellow switch SW4 the X62T can be configured to determine the connection
order during power-up. This can take up to 2 minutes.

After detection the X62T stores the detected order in internal persistent storage
(EEPROM) and uses this for operation. Once the correct connection order has been
determined and stored turn off Ordering using SW4 YELLOW.

As the order of wires is stored in EEPROM the X62T will continue to function after
power-up, even when a MTT wire is broken and automatic order detection is no
longer possible.
5 Installation Page 27 of 44

Note
After connecting or reconnecting MTT wires the order of the Blue
wires will most likely be changed and the correct thermocouple
order must be re-detected. To make the X62T re-determine the
order set switch SW4 YELLOW (Ordering) in position ‘On’ and Power
Cycle it.

5.7 Electrical connection MTT, VITO MTT or VITO LT water probe

The X62T-HART supports combined temperature and water probes. See Table 1 for
the supported type codes and check the actual type from the identification plate.
• Connect the MTT or VITO MTT Combined water and temperature probes
according to Figure 13: Connection of water probes.

Caution
Discharge tools to the tank before bringing into contact with the
X62 terminals to prevent ESD (electrostatic discharges). Then FIRST
connect the GREEN wire to terminal 38 on CN3. Damage due to ESD
related events are not covered by the warranty.

6.2 Level Setup

The X62T-HART can compute the average product- (AVP) and average gas (AVG)
temperatures. In order to do so it needs to know some mechanical probe
characteristics like positions and lengths and of course the product level.

6.2.1 Element positions

The position of the bottom of the probe in the tank is defined by the Probe Offset.

For spot elements the X62T defines a position as the distance between the element
and the bottom of the probe. So it’s absolute position which is compared to the level
is calculated as:
absolute position = probe offset + element position

For averaging elements the position is interpreted as the length of the element. This
is measured from the bottom of the probe.

6.2.2 Configure Level Setup

There are three methods to notify the product level to the X62T-HART.
1. The HART Master can write it to the Level Device Variable (index 23) using
command 79.
2. Capture response messages (ACKs) from a HART Level Transmitter.
3. Capture burst messages (BACKs) from a HART Level Transmitter.

In case 1 no configuration is needed. In case 2 and 3 the Address, Command and

Device Variable to use must be configured.
Page 32 of 44 X62T-HART Installation Guide

6.2.3 Configure mechanical probe characteristics.

Table 12: Configuring Mechanical Probe Characteristics

Name Description
Remove Write Protection Switch 2 Red in Off position
Level Units Available units: Feet, Meters, Inches,
Centimeters, Millimeters.
Defaults to: Meters
Note: all length related variables of the X62T share
the same unit.
Element Positions Use the value from Table 5: Mechanical
dimensions.
Default: 0.0 .. 17.0 (m)
Temperature element offset Use the value from Table 5: Mechanical
dimensions
Default: 0.0 (m)
Hysteresis Default 0.1 (m)
Minimal Immersion Depth Minimal Product- or Gas Immersion Depth for an
element to be used for computing AVP or AVG.

Default: 0.0 (m)

Minimum Element Position Allow to specify which Elements will be used for
Maximum Element Position computing AVP or AVG.
Default values are based on the positions of top
and bottom elements and probe offset in order
to have all spots considered valid.
Optionally apply Write Protection Switch 2 Red in On position
Exit

6.3 Configure Capacitive Water Probe.

Note: the X62T-HART supports 3 capacitive sensors but some configuration options
are only available for the first capacitive sensor so we strongly recommend to use
this one for a water probe.

Table 13: Configure Capacitive Probe

Name Description
Remove Write Protection Switch 2 Red in Off position
Capacitive Sensors Choose a Capacitive Sensor(s).
6 Commissioning Probes Page 33 of 44

Name Description
Active Guard Choose Fast or Slow.
Capacitive Units Available units: picofarads, Feet, Meters, Inches,
Centimeters, Millimeters.
Defaults to: picofarads
Length Mode Minimum (* The minimum value (in picofarad) a
measurement must have before it is considered
valid. When below this value it’s status will be
‘Bad’.

Setting it’s value to -1.0 will disable this variable.

Length Mode Submerged (* The minimum value (in picofarad) a
measurement must have before it is considered
submerged. When below this value it’s status will
be ‘Poor Accuracy’.

Setting it’s value to -1.0 will disable this variable.

Optionally apply Write Protection Switch 2 Red in On position
Exit
Note: configuration options marked with (*are only available for the first capacitive input (C1).

Length Mode
The length units for capacitive sensors are meant to be used for water probes. When using
C1 and selecting a length unit ‘Length Mode Minimum ’ and ‘Length Mode Submerged’ will
also come into effect.
These two values are in picofarad since the comparison is done on the ‘raw’ capacitive
measurements not on the possibly trimmed Device Variable values and since the
X62T does not always know the product level.

Calibration
A system calibration on-site is highly recommend for best accuracy. See Appendix B,
Calibrating a Water Probe for how to perform this.

Note: the minimum number of temperature elements is 1. In case only the capacitive
sensors are in use connect a 100 Ohm resistor between T5 and T6 and configure a
one element RTD using Pt100 and 3W Individual Sense measurement.

6.3.1 Units
The X62T supports three configurable units: Temperature, Length, Capacitive. These
units are shared between the respective variables.
Page 34 of 44 X62T-HART Installation Guide

Internally the X62 uses a fixed unit so changing the unit will only effect the value
when it is requested. For example a position first set in meters will remain valid when
the Length units are later set to feet.

6.4 Operation
The values of the temperature elements are available through the Device Variables
(see Appendix A, HART Device Information). The first element is available at the first
Device variable (at index 0). The next at index 1 et cetera until the number of
elements in use (at index num.of.elements-1).

The Device Variables not in use will have a NaN value.

If the X62T-HART knows the product level it can compute the average product and
gas temperatures.

6.5.3 Disable Sensors

If a sensor is broken it can cause alarms to go off due to the resulting device state or
sensor value. This can be prevented by (temporarily) disabling the sensor. This will
cause the specific sensor to not be used for computing the value or the device state.
When one or more sensor(s) are disabled the status of AVG and AVP will be set to
‘Poor Accuracy’.

Disabling can be done using DD menu:

Appendix B, Calibrating a Water Probe

The following settings are intended to set up water bottom measurement quickly. For
settings customized to your local installation please consult your gauge manual.

Many water probes are delivered including calibration values. As these values are
influenced by the actual installation using the factory calibration values will
negatively impact water bottom accuracy. A system calibration on-site is highly
recommend for best accuracy.

The X62T allows to calibrate the capacitive sensor using two Trim Points.

HART Calibration Procedure

The HART Calibration procedure is in short:
1. Set the process value to the minimum value and pass the actual value
measured with the calibrator to the X62T-HART using the Lower Trim Point.
2. Set the process value to the maximum value and pass the actual value
measured with the calibrator to the X62T-HART using the Upper Trim Point.

Before calibrating one can set the unit of the trim value to ‘meters’ which will result in
the capacitive measurement being translated into a level.

To calibrate the Lower Trim Point we recommend following the situation where the
probe is fully covered with product where possible. During installation it is in many
cases possible to temporarily position the probe in the tank at such a height that it is
fully covered with product. This can be achieved for instance by elevating the bottom
of the water probe above the water level in the tank (assuming there is little or no
water present).

When no water is present in the tank item the Upper Trim Point can not be calibrated.
When water is present The water level should be measured using a manual dip and
this value can then be used for the Upper trim Point.

Specifying Calibration Values

Calibration values can be configured directly. The following table lists the four
properties to configure.
Page 40 of 44 X62T-HART Installation Guide

Table 16: Capacitive Sensor calibration properties

Property Meaning
Lower Sensor Value The capacity measured at the lowest level.
Lower Reference Value The value measured by the calibrator at the lowest
level. Or the value to report for the lowest level in
case ‘Length Mode’ is enabled1.
Upper Sensor Value The capacity measured at the highest level.
Upper Reference Value The value measured by the calibrator at the highest
level. Or the value to report for the highest level in
case ‘Length Mode’ is enabled1.

In case of using a VITO water probe and the availability of the gauges configuration.
The following table can be used:

Table 17: relation between VITO water probe Items and calibration properties

Item Meaning Maps to Property

VR Minimum water capacity in pF Lower Sensor Value
VT Maximum water capacity in pF Upper Sensor Value
WB Water probe bottom position Lower Reference Value
WP Water probe length Upper Reference Value = WB+WP

Note: if changing from using both Trim Points to using only one Trim Point first
perform a ‘Reset Trim Points’.

Percentage of Range
Translating the Capacitive Sensor value into a water level value can also be done
using the HART mechanism of ‘Ranging Conversion’.
First map the Device Variable of the capacitive sensor in use to the Primary Variable.
Then set the ‘Lower Range Value’ to define the 0% point and then the ‘Upper range
Value’ to define the 100% point. Now the value of the ‘Percentage of Range’ will
indicate the percentage of water.

1 ‘Length Mode’ is enabled when using the first capacitive sensor (C1) and the unit of the capacitive
sensors is set to a length unit.
