HM LU
Congratulations, you’ve reached another level. Life is cheap in the world of HM, so
give yourself a pat on the back. Gawds know what horrors your character endured
to get here. But far worse will follow, and you need to be ready. Follow these simple
steps to level-up.
Step 1: Adjustments
1. Improve hitpoints (roll your hit die and add your constitution modifier)
Clerics
Fighters
Magic-Users
Thieves
4. Review your class. Record EPs needed to advance to next level and all mis-
cellaneous bonuses. The traditional HM descriptions of your class are fairly
complicated, so if you’re confused just go to the simplified rules. Links below.
Cleric
– Druid
– Zealot (page 13)
Fighter
– Barbarian
– Berserker
– Cavalier
– Dark Knight
– Knight Errant
– Monk
– Paladin
– Ranger
Magic-User
– Battle Mage
– Illusionist
Thief
– Assassin
– Bard
Step 2: Training
You get BPs by going to school.
The first week of training gives you 5 BPs at a cost of 1500 GPs. Subsequent
weeks give you 2 BPs and still cost 1500 GPs. Just like in real-life, tuition is
hard to change. Universities love keeping their students low on coin.
Click on the below links to see what talents your race allows.

2. Buy proficiencies. Each costs 1 BP. Keep the below table in mind. A list of all
proficiencies can be found here.
Class Group Non-Prof Penalty Max Number of Profs New Prof When Level is Multiple of
Cleric -3 2 4
Fighter -2 4 3
Magic-User -5 1 6
Thief -3 2 4
3. Buy skills. Recall that no character may have more ranks in a skill than their
CL+6. Also, the cost doubles for every 5 ranks (e.g. to go from 5 to 6 ranks
costs 2 BPs).
Table 1: Standard Skills
See PHB for the description of these skills, though bear in mind that some have been edited in the
simplified rules.

1
There’s a minimum level required to take these skills. As such, there is no BP cost.
2
Special rules apply to selecting the Punching Specialization and Wrestling Specialization proficiencies. They do not count as a specialization. Any class may take one of the two, but cannot take both. Multi-
classed and single-classed fighter group characters may take both, but may only take one of them at first level. Single-classed characters from the fighter group may take the proficiencies several times for
added benefit, but may only take one level in one of them at first level. Single-classed fighter group characters are the only ones allowed to take more than one level of either skill, and may take them as well
as their normal weapon specialization. These are interpretations of the rules, which are rather vague. For the exact wordings, see CG106. Also note that there are no official numbers for the proficiencies,
including BP cost -- the 1 BP listed is the cost HMTK uses.
3
Nominally only the Fighter class is allowed Specialization, but there are multiple exceptions. Check the relevant class or package description for information.
