The aim of the module is to evolve the knowledge of students on basics of


internal combustion engines, automobile engine auxiliary systems,
Module Aim kinematics and dynamics of internal combustion engines & vehicle dynamics,
engine performance testing, exhaust gas emission testing, equipment and tests
and etc.

After successful completion of the module, the learner should be able to

LO1: apply automobile systems based on their practical applications and


usages and, the different part of an automobile & the engine
nomenclature
LO2: illustrate the auxiliary systems of automobile vehicle including
Module Learning lubricating systems, engine cooling systems, fuel supply systems,
Outcomes electrical systems, steering systems, suspension systems & tyres, brake
systems, and etc.
LO3: analyse the Kinematics and Dynamics of Internal Combustion Engines
& Vehicle Dynamics
LO4: apply the different Engine Performance Testing, Exhaust Gas Emission
Testing and Equipment

Internal Combustion Engines


Engine construction and operation, Classification of engines, Spark ignition
engines, Two stroke engine, Four stroke engine, Compression ignition
engines, Comparison of 2-stroke & 4-stroke engines, Single and multi-
cylinder engines and their typical arrangement.
Module Outline
Automobile Engine Auxiliary Systems

● Engine Lubricating System


Viscosity classification for engine oil (SAE), Diesel engine oil calcification
(APL/MIL-L) and Petrol engines oil classification (API), Selection of
lubricants for specific requirements, Splash system, Full pressure system,
Mixture lubricating system.

● Engine Cooling System


Necessity of engine cooling, air cooling, and, water cooling, Comparison of
air and water-cooling systems.

● Fuel Supply System


A simple or elementary carburettor, Complete carburettor, Electronic fuel
injection, Diesel injection system.

● Electrical System
Battery ignition system, Magneto ignition system, Low tension magneto
ignition system.

● Brake System
Different types of brake systems (Mechanical, hydraulic, compressed air,
exhaust and tandem, braking systems), Construction features of different
types of brake systems, Relative advantages and disadvantages of various
braking systems, Air compressors and exhausters, Disc and drum brakes.

● Steering System and Tyres/ wheels


Basic steering geometry, Layout and operation, Power assisted steering,
wheel balancing and alignments; pneumatic tyres, solid tyres, their
construction and behaviour, usage of tyres, tyre rotation,

● Suspension System
Necessity of suspension system, basic suspension geometry and operation,
Modern trends in suspension systems ;

● Transmission System
Types of gear boxes and their operation, Over drive gear system, Different
types of manual, Semiautomatic and automatic transmissions, Agricultural
and earth moving equipment

Stroke (S), Velocity (V), and, Acceleration (A) of the piston (MathLab),
Forces acting in a crank mechanism, power overlapping; Stability and control
of vehicles, Dynamic analysis along straight and curved paths, Stability and
control during acceleration and decelerating.

SAE and ISO standards in measuring brake power (bp), Chassis dynamometer
and engine dynamometer, Obtaining the indicator diagram, Engine
characteristics, Ignition timing measurement and corrections, Fuel
consumption testing, Diagnostics of the cylinder piston group, Valves and
gasket, Compression gauge and compressed air gauging system, Emissions
and air pollution, Environmental issues, Methods of reducing exhaust gas
