HOW TO USE THIS MODULE

Welcome!
The unit competency, “Install PV system” is one of the
competencies of PV Systems Installation NC II. A course which comprises
the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for a Technician of PV
Systems trainee to possess.
The module, Install PV System, contains training materials and
activities related to Preparing Documentation on PV system, Installing PV
Components and Installing Electrical Wiring.
In this module, you are required to go through a series of learning
activities in order to complete each learning outcome. In each learning
outcome are Information Sheets, Self-checks, Operation Sheets, Task
Sheets, and Job Sheets. Follow and perform the activities on your own. If
you have questions, do not hesitate to ask for assistance from your
facilitator.
Remember to:
 Read information sheet and complete the self-checks.
 Perform the Task Sheets, Operation Sheets, and Job Sheets until you
are confident that your outputs conform to the Performance Criteria
Checklists that follow the said work sheets.
 Submit outputs of the Task Sheets, Operation Sheets, and Job Sheets
to your facilitator for evaluation and recording in the Achievement
Chart. Outputs shall serve as your portfolio during the Institutional
Competency Evaluation. When you feel confident that you have had
sufficient practice, ask your trainer to evaluate you. The results of
your assessment will be recorded in your Achievement Chart and
Progress Chart.
You must pass the Institutional Competency Evaluation for this
competency before moving to another competency. A Certificate of
Achievement will be awarded to you after passing the evaluation.

Information Sheet 1.1.1

(Validate Parameters for the Installation)

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Use instruments for surveying
2. draw/sketch and locate site for installation

The solar site assessment is one of the most important steps in

proper solar site installation, specially when it comes to the solar engineer
and designer of record on your project. Hence, we tend to identify the
correct position of the solar panels/module to be install to increase
reliability in terms of charge harvest, security in terms of falling fallen
debris, wild animals, and natural calamities.
Here are some steps to perform thorough site assessment for roof
mounted solar panels:
1. Identify shaded areas - Make sure to double-check to ensure there
are no shaded areas on your site that Near Maps or Google have
missed.
2. Examine for Roof Obstruction – Perhaps there is a vent that was
overlooked and will obstruct the solar panel installation.
3. Identify Roof Pitch – This is something that you might not always see
from an aerial image on the internet. And when you go out to install,
the steeper with pitches, the more dangerous technically it is for
your crew, which means they’re going to be working slower for
safety reasons. So, when you’re bidding your job from the installer’s
perspective, it’s good to know what the pitch of the roof is that
you’re working on.
4. Check the Roof Condition – You want to check the condition of the
roof. If the roof looks like it needs to be repaired or there might be
some damages or some leaks. We would always advise you to have
the client look into having the roof prior to going solar.
5. Inspect Main Service Panel – You want to take a look at the condition
of the main electrical service panel in the building. It is
recommended, if possible, having a license professional with you
that can remove the outside cover from the service panel and
expect its condition. Then you will know if you need to make any
sort of an upgrade.

6. Position of solar panel – In the Philippines you can set the angle of
elevation from 4 degrees - 22 degrees facing South to ensure a
greater charge harvest.
For step 1-6, the most important thing you can do is TAKE PICTURES
or Videos! Documenting each of these steps with visual references
is essential so that you’re not going back to the site or asking the
client to take pictures of certain things. It’s the job of the installer.
7. Fill out the Site Assessment Form – the last step is to fill out the site
survey form.
Here are some steps to perform thorough site assessment for ground
mounted solar panels:
1. Identify shaded areas - Make sure to double-check to ensure there
are no shaded areas on your site that Near Maps or Google have
missed.
2. Identify the approximate grade of the land – Make sure to get the
details of the land including, elevation and structure.
3. Describe activity of adjacent tenants – Determine whether the land
is near highway, mining, agriculture, and etc. that may humper the
location of the solar panels.
4. Inspect Main Service Panel – You want to take a look at the condition
of the main electrical service panel in the building. It is
recommended, if possible, having a license professional with you
that can remove the outside cover from the service panel and
expect its condition. Then you will know if you need to make any
sort of an upgrade.
5. Position of solar panel – In the Philippines you can set the angle of
elevation from 4 degrees - 22 degrees facing South to ensure a
greater charge harvest.

How to use compass in positioning your

solar panel
compass, in navigation or surveying, the
primary device for direction-finding on the
surface of the Earth. Compasses may operate
on magnetic or gyroscopic principles or by
determining the direction of the Sun or a star. In
positioning your panel you should consider that
the sun rises on the EAST and sun goes down on
WEST. Simple use the compass to identify south
and face your panel in that direction.

You may also use some application such as sun light surveyor app on
android devices to determine where will the sun pass from sun rise to sun
set.

Have you?...

Check whether the site is suitable for solar energy by checking

that the panel is unshaded to be considered as potentially good
site.
Position the solar panel facing South with enough angle from 4-
22 degrees.
Check if there is possible fallen debris such as fruits,
construction materials, rocks, branches of trees and etc.
Positioned away from any animals that may crumpled the
panels
Positioned firm that it will not shake if there is a sudden
movement caused by heavy equipment passing near the site
and the blowing wind.
Check for the durability of the roof to support the panels
