Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Illustration 11 Self-Learning Module on Drawing in

Proportions!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

LESSON

DRAWING IN PROPORTIONS

Have you ever wondered what’s the deal with the artist peering in their subject
using their pencil? Of course, they are not flaunting their professional pencil or just
to look cool while working. They were measuring, artist’s do this to get an accurate
illustration and realism in their artwork. To be accurate means to include details
from your subject to the canvass or drawing surface, and to achieve this, an artist
should be able to understand proportions. In this four-part lesson about drawing in
proportion, we will discuss what is proportion, its importance in every illustration,
and the techniques on how to achieve accurate proportions in your artworks.

Let’s begin…

Proportion as a Principle of Design

In our past lessons, we had an in-depth discussion about the elements of art.
The elements of art are the building blocks of artwork, on the other hand, the
principles of design are the techniques on how the artist uses the elements of art in
their art piece.
One of the important principles of design is proportion. It is the relation of
the size, amount, or the number of an individual part in comparison to the whole
image. Often proportion is mistaken for scaling, because of their relative definition.
The scale is the size of an object relative to another object in an artwork. The “whole”
as defined in proportion and scaling can refer to a single object like a face or the
entire artwork like a landscape.

Proportion helps promote accuracy in an illustration, especially in

observational drawing. You’re probably tired of hearing the term “draw what you
see”, it may seem simple to just draw what you are looking at, but if you are not
certain on what to look for and how to look for it, then that is frustrating.

Proportion helps the audience make sense of the artwork. For example, if you
are going to draw a landscape of a tree and a person, the tree should be in a proper
scale in relation to a person. The person’s figure should also be in proportion to
what a regular person looks like in real life (no tentacle-like arms or short leg, you
get the point).

Of course, in art you are not bound by the rules, these are just guides.
Because there are drawing techniques like caricature, and cubism in which the artist
purposely alters proportion to evoke an emotion from their audience. But if you want
accuracy in your illustration, I suggest following the subject's proportions when
drawing.

In Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man (ca.1490), you will identify da Vinci’s

representation of ideal human body proportions. For the facial proportions when
drawing the head there are a lot of artists with their methods, Andrew Loomis and
Frank Reilly are the two popular artists in this field. Their methods of drawing the
head are the basis of some modern artist when drawing.

There are different techniques on how to improve your accuracy in drawing,

these techniques can’t promise you to improve immediately, but keep in mind that
drawing is a skill that anyone can master if you put work on it.

Techniques in Proportional Drawing

• Sighting/Measuring Technique. This is the most common technique to measure

the proportion of your subject. You can use any comfortable tool, but a pencil works
well. Use this to measure angles, gauge relative size, and determine how different
features line up on your subject and transfer these measurements on your drawing
surface.

How it works:

1. Begin by marking your position from your subject.

Make sure that you are seated or standing in a
comfortable position, since it may take some time to get
all measurements on your drawing surface. Keep
everything constant or suffer uneven proportions.

2. Hold your pencil and extend your arm completely without bending the elbow.
Bring your line of sight to your shoulder and
close one eye.

3. Use the end of the pencil or the tip and line it

up to the highest or widest point in your
subject, it depends on your preference. Use
your thumb to mark the bottom
measurement.

4. Transfer the marks on your drawing surface. Block in all the markings to get
the horizontal and vertical measurements of your subject.

5. Once you are done with measuring the first element of the subject, the rest is
easy, just follow the steps repeatedly until you are done with the
measurement. Always keep in mind the other object should be properly
proportional to the first object you measured. This way you will be assured
that your markings are accurate.

6. Connect your markings to show the visible image of your subject. In case
some portions are angled, don’t worry about its actual measurement, measure
it with your pencil and mark whatever you had observed and transfer it on
your drawing surface.
This method is best when drawing from life or actual subjects. However, a
simplified version of this method can be used when drawing from photos, especially
when the image is the same as the surface. Simply take the measurements from the
reference and transfer. For scaling purposes, if the image is smaller than the surface,
some artist uses proportional dividers to transfer measurements. Drawing with
proportions in freehand is the best way to learn accuracy in drawing, if you had a
better grasp on how to execute this method then you can move with mechanically
aided methods like grids or a viewfinder.

The following activities will measure how much you have learned in this
lesson. Ready your drawing supplies and comfortable stations.

ACTIVITIES

Activity A. Using a red ink pen, measure and mark each relative object in the
images below.

Activity B. Using the outputs, you made in activity A, transfer the markings on the
space below using a red ink pen. Add details and finish the artwork by adding tonal
value. Don’t worry about the red markings, these will be the basis when grading
your output.

Guide Question:
Did you find this activity helpful in improving your drawing accuracy? Why?

Activity C. In your sketch pad, create a simple arrangement of three to four objects
in your house and illustrate them using the sighting method, try to capture the
proportion of each object accurately.
