STANDARD SPECIFICATION FOR HYDRAULIC HOSES

(Spec No. ONGC/TS-SG/Mech – 017 RI)

1.0 SCOPE & APPLICATIONS

This specification covers the minimum requirements for procurement of hydraulic

hoses suitable for use with common hydraulic fluids such as mineral oils, soluble
oils, oil and water emulsions, aqueous glycol solutions and water.

2.0 GENERAL FEATURES:

2.1 Hoses & Hose Assemblies shall be new, unused & of recent manufacture (not
more than one year as on date of delivery).
2.2 Hydraulic hoses shall be light to handle, flexible to use, convenient to store and to
be available in long continuous length. The length of the hose assembly for this
purpose shall be measured after subjected to tests.
2.3 All hoses shall be non-collapsible type and able to withstand full suction.

3.0 TECHNICAL FEATURES:

3.1 Codes and Standards - The Hydraulic Hoses with Hose Assemblies shall be
designed, constructed and tested as per standard manufacturing practices,
compatible with specified operating conditions & parameters and shall be suitable
for the intended service. Codes & Standards (latest) includes but not limited to the
following, will be applicable:

S. No Standard Description
1 SAE -J - 517 Hydraulic Hose
2 SAE -J - 516 Hydraulic Hose Fittings
SAE -J -343 Tests and procedures for SAE 100 R series
3
hydraulic hose and hose assemblies.

3.2 Functional Parameters - Indentor to specify exact values of the parameters

under which hose has to operate, based on operational requirement of drilling rig,
few of them are mentioned hereunder:
3.2.1 These hoses are used for handling common hydraulic fluids at temperatures
ranging from -400C to + 930C.
3.2.2 The ambient air temperature shall be from 0 to 500C and humidity up to 95%.
3.2.3 Hose assemblies shall be suitable for working environment resistant to kinking in
storage/use at angular position, ageing, abrasion, sun and mildew.
3.3 Fixed/Variable Parameters - Indentor to specify all parameters as below along
with application as per operational requirement, wherever applicable:

4 Length of hose Indentor to specify as per requirement

3.4 Constructional Features:

3.4.1 Hydraulic Hose shall be constructed for the intended service,
conforming to SAE J 517.
3.4.2 Hose Assemblies (End Connections):
3.4.2.1 Conforming to SAE- J - 516.
3.4.2.2 Fittings not covered under SAE J 516 shall be specified/approved by the
indentor before placing order.
3.4.2.3 Specific requirement of end connections to be indicated by the indentor.
3.4.3 Tolerances on length of hose (elongation or contraction), Hose Inner Dia (Min &
Max), Hose Outer Dia Type (Min & Max), reinforcement dia (Min & Max) and
pressure ratings shall be conforming to SAE J 517.
3.4.4 Strength properties of lining and cover, Hose concentricity, Minimum bend radius
of the hose, Proof Pressure and Minimum Burst Pressure shall be conforming to
SAE J 517.
3.5 Material: Vendor to ensure that material of construction offered for hydraulic hose
shall be compatible with specified operating conditions & parameters and shall be
suitable for the intended service, except as required or prohibited by the data
sheet/indentor or the relevant codes & standards mentioned at 3.1.
3.6 Data Sheet:
All information in the data sheet shall be furnished completely by the vendor along
with the BID.
As per Annexure I enclosed.

4.0 MARKING DETAILS: Each length of hose shall be legibly marked at the adjacent
to each end of hose with following detail as per numerous procedures mentioned
in SAE J 517:

4.1 SAE Hose Specification number

4.2 Hose Type & Designation
4.3 Hose dash size
4.2 Manufacturer's trade marks (if any).
4.3 Nominal Hose inside dia
4.4 Working pressure of Hose
4.5 Non conductive or electrically nonconductive test for thermoplastic & PTEE lined
Hoses, as applicable.
4.6 Month, day and year of manufacture
Note: Hoses are referenced by listing, in sequence, the 100 R number (100 R1 or
100 R7 or….. etc), the hose type letters (A, AT, B or BT) wherever applicable and
hose dash size (-4, -16, -24 etc).

5.0 INSPECTION PROCEDURE:

5.1 Inspection/testing shall be carried out in conformance to the various parameters of

the specification, by ONGC authorised inspection agency.
5.2 The bidder has to confirm availability of testing facilities to check the conformity
with respect to this specification. These testing facilities shall include but not
limited to; dimensional check list, hydraulic proof test, hydrostatic burst pressure
test, test on finished hoses, elongation/contraction in length test, leakage test, cold
bend test, oil resistance test, ozone resistance test, impulse test, visual
examination, electrical conductivity test in case of SAE 100 R 7, SAE 100 R 8 &
SAE 100 R 14 (for thermoplastic & PTEE Hoses), end connection working
pressure test etc.
5.3 QAP (Quality assurance plan) shall be submitted by the bidder
(vendor/manufacturer) for approval of the user. Inspection shall be carried out as
per Approved QAP shall be the part of purchase order.

6.0 MISCELLENEOUS:

All the following essential requirements shall be as per requirement of

user/indentor (Indentor may specify) or otherwise MM manuals of ONGC or if
not any of these two then Data Sheet filled up by the vendor:

course of job completion.
6.5.2 Certificate that the hoses have been designed, manufactured & tested to meet the
specified requirement.
6.6 Packing: As agreed to between user & supplier with following precautions:
6.6.1 The hose may be suitably wrapped in Hessian over their entire length. Flanges
ends shall be protected by circular disks slightly greater than the diameter of the
flange, bolted in two places diametrically opposite.
6.6.2 The hoses shall be laid straight (for smaller lengths) and supported evenly on carrier.
6.6.3 Lifting point shall be clearly marked on the package to show permitted point for handling.
6.6.4 All fittings shall have dust proof caps.
