INTRODUCTION

The site visit to two of the upcoming buildings in the

NITT campus gave the students an extensive look into
the real life construction methods, practices,
designing, handling and management of the same.
Since being in the same locality as of the students, it
provided information on relevant features of
designing.
SITE - 1 The building caters to the need of Production Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering departments
comprising of mostly labs and research areas.
FLOOR PLAN
TOTAL FLOOR AREA EXCLUDING PORCH:
2837.5 SQM (GROUND FLOOR)

The building includes a massive

central courtyard around which the
rooms are aligned. The building is a
G+2 structure with a terrace. The
ground floor includes multiple labs
with the required furnishing and a
few halls set for research or seminar
purposes. It also has staff cabins.
KEY ELEMENTS/TAKEAWAYS
STRUCTURE
THE STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING IS
RCC FRAMED STRUCTURE. IT
PROVIDES GOOD STRENGTH TO THE
BUILDING, ENSURING SAFETY AND
STABILITY OF THE BUILDING. THE
WALLS DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE
BRICKS LOAD DISTRIBUTION OF THE
WALLS
BUILDING.
FLY ASH BRICKS ARE USED
EXTENSIVELY IN THE THE WALLS ARE PLASTERED AND
CONSTRUCTION OF THE BUILDING. GROOVED SUCH THAT ADHESION IS
THESE BRICKS ARE ENERGY ENSURED. MSAND AND PSAND ARE
EFFICIENT, ECONOMICAL, USED FOR PLASTERING AND
LIGHTWEIGHT AND PROVIDES MORTAR PURPOSES.
GOOD SOUND AND HEAT
INSULATION.
EXPANSION
JOINTS
Expansion joints are seen extensively in the
building. The building is subdivided into four
separate sections using the expansion joint. The
joint is almost between 75-110 mm.
Construction:
the four segments of the building are all
constructed independently starting from the
foundation.
the load distribution of each segment
dependd only on the beans and columns of
the same section.
the joints are sealed using joining material like
construction grade thermocol/platic joints.

c
ADVANTAGES OF EXPANSION JOINTS
Since the load distribution is independent, it is safer when there
are extreme seismic activity.
The structural stability of the building is ensured.
Easier for repair and reconstruction.
It becomes easier for future expansion of the building.
since there’s a joint every 35-40m, it enable mitigation of both
dead and live load.
It makes the planning of the structural integrity of the building
much more simpler because there are four separate segments
being designed rather than one whole one.
It is beneficial when the thermal and climatic properties of the
area is taken into account.
KEY ELEMENTS/TAKEAWAYS
STAIR CASES
THERE ARE TWO SETS IF
STAIRCASES PROVIDED IN THE
BUILDING ONE IS AN
EXTERNAL STAIRCASE AND
THE OTHER ONE IS THE FORE
EVACUATION STAIRCASE ON
THE END CORNERS OF THE
BUILDING.
THE FIRE EVAC STAIRS WERE
WIDER THAN THE EXTERIOR
STAIRCASE. IMAGES

TOILETS
TOILETS ARE PROVIDED FOR
BOTH MEN AND WOMEN ON
EACH FLOOR.
THE TOILET INCLUDES BOTH
INDIAN AND WESTERN WC.
WASHBASINS WITH
MIRRORS.
SUNKEN FLOOR IS SEEN.
UNIVERSAL TOILETS ARE
ALSO INCLUDED IN THE
DESIGN.
KEY ELEMENTS/TAKEAWAYS
ELEVATORS
THE BUILDING INCLUDES TWO
ELEVATORS WHICH GO
THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.
THERE ARE SAID LIFT ROOM
OPENING IN EACH FLOOR.
THERE IS A DEDICATED LIFT
ROOM ON THE TERRACE TO
ACCOMMODATE ALL THE
LIFT EQUIPMENT.

SITE - 2 The building caters to the need of Instrumentation and Control
Engineering. It incorporates labs, seminar halls and staff rooms.
THE SITE HAD ALMOST ALL SAME ARCHITECTURAL AND
CONSTRUCTIONAL DETAILS AS SITE 1.

THE BUILDING HAD LABORATORIES AND INSTRUMENTATION RESEARCH

REQUIREMENT ROOMS ALONG WITH SINAR HALLS CATERING TO THE
NEED OF THE DEPARTMENT AND ITS FUNCTION.

IT ALSO INCLUDES FACULTY ROOMS FOR THOSE TEACHING IN THE

DEPARTMENT.

THERE’S A CENTRAL OPEN SPACE RUNNING THROUGHOUT THE HEIGHT

TO FULFILL THE LIGHT AND VENTILLAT NEEDS.

IT IS AN EXTENSION OF THE ALREADY EXISTING ICE DEPARTMENT

BUILDING.
