OBSERVATION CHECKLIST

The observation checklist is the most commonly used in instruments for performance
evaluation. A checklist enables the observer to note only whether a trait is present or not. It
consists of a listing of steps activities or behaviors the observer records when an incident occurs.
The observer has to judge whether a certain behavior has taken place. Check list is basically a
method of recording whether a particularly characteristics is present or not or whether an action
had been taken or not. This provides a simple ‘yes or no’ judgment. In nursing, checklist is an
important assessment tool used evaluating the performance skills.

Steps to Using the Observation Checklist

For effective use of an observation checklist, follow these steps:

Factor the relevant areas – Ask the right questions per individual/group to be observed by
breaking down essential items for each of them. The teacher observation template can include
subjects such as effective planning, teaching techniques, and student/teacher relationships. A
general classroom observation checklist, meanwhile, studies the environment, class structure,
methods, teacher/student interactions, and content.

Customize according to your specific needs – Since there are different factors to be considered
in creating or using an observation checklist, modify ready-made checklists to best suit your
needs.

Pick the best corresponding choices – Answers to each item can be a range of Yes, No, N/A, a
variation of strong, average, weak, or any other choices that would best correspond to your set
questions.

Include general observations – Add general notes or recommendations for every observation
conducted. This can be used as a way to highlight any glaring weaknesses and areas for
improvement, or as a feature to reinforce positive comments.
Sign off with a digital signature – Complete the use of observation checklists by adding the
name and signature of the evaluator, teacher, or instructor.

Advantages of checklists

 Everyone forgets things and makes mistakes checklists help us to remember what we
need to do
 you can follow a checklist serially, which helps you complete what needs to be done
 you can adapt the list to your own circumstances and psychology
 a checklist helps you to be specific
 checklists make it easy to delegate tasks.

Disadvantages of checklists

 Checklists are produced by people or maybe only one person and so are likely to be
incomplete
 some people find long checklists demotivating or distracting
 a checklist can lull you into a false sense of security, and prevent you seeing the big
picture, asking why, or thinking about the causes of problems
 checklists have headings but otherwise do not specify the dependencies between the
items on the list, so failing to define the order in which the items need to be carried out
and risking things being done out of order
 checklists are a prime target for artificial intelligence, so reliance on them exposes you to
the risk of redundancy
 checklists don't tell you whether the organisation will achieve its goals.

What is Rating Scale Definition?

The rating scale is a closed-ended survey question used to represent respondent feedback
in a comparative form for specific particular features/products/services. It is one of the most
established question types for online and offline surveys where survey respondents are expected
to rate an attribute or feature. The rating scale is a variant of the popular multiple-choice
question, which is widely used to gather the information that provides relative information about
a specific topic.

Anecdotal record
Anecdotal record is a one of the method for assessing clinical performance of the
student’s behavior observed by teacher. It is a verbal snapshot of the incident. Episodes of
student behavior are recorded periodically in relation to the educational outcomes as specified by
the learning objectives. This allows the instructor to chart student progress in varies area by
making comparisons over time in a variety of situations."

Sociometric device

group. It typically involves surveys or questionnaires to gather data on interactions and
connections among group members, helping researchers understand social dynamics and patterns
