2.1 Using the device

The six-channel relay card A6720 is a component of the AMS 6500 machinery monitoring
system. The card serves the output of logical signals of measuring amplifiers at all kind of
industrial applications where reliable adaptations between electronic components and
switching circuits of the plant are required.

Adjustment elements

Upon delivery, the device is ready for operation. Adjustment elements such as jumpers, in
general, do not have to be switched or changed. However, if, for the configuration of the
device, changes of hardware settings are necessary, these are described in the manual.

2.2 Power supply

The device must be supplied with safety low voltage SELV (EN 60950) 24 V. The voltage
required for operation, must be obtained from a separate power supply. This power supply
must meet the DIN IEC 61010 (Safety requirements for electrical equipment for
measurement, control and laboratory use).

The supply voltages in the monitor are transformed by DC/DC converters and are galvanically
separated from the 24V supply. When connecting the supply voltage, it must be taken into
account, that the 24V supply is tangible and therefore must be separated and isolated from
the 230V mains supply (VDE 0100 part 410).

7 Using the device

2.3 Radio interference

This device is shielded and tested to be technically immune to radio interference, and satisfies
the standards of EN 50 081-1 and EN 50 082-2. Ensure that external power supplies connected
to the backplane also satisfy these standards. Radio interference can occur when the device is
connected to other peripheral devices that are not properly shielded against radio
interference.

2.4 Owner's responsibility

Take this device out of service and safeguard it from unintentional operation under the
following circumstances:

• the device shows visible damage

• the device no longer operates
• the device suffers any type of overload (such as storage or transport) that exceeds
permissible limits.

DANGER
If device tests have to be completed during operation, or if the device has to be replaced or
decommissioned, it will impair the machine protection and may cause the machine to shut
down.
Make sure to deactivate machine protection before starting such work, and reactivate it
after work has been completed.

2.5 ESD safety

DANGER
Internal components can be damaged or destroyed due to electrostatic discharge (ESD)
during handling of the device.
Take suitable measures before handling the module to prevent electrostatic discharges
through the sensor electronics. Such measures might include, for example, wearing an ESD
bracelet.
Transport and storage of electronic components may only be made in ESD-safe packaging.
Handle the device with particular care at dry meteorological conditions with relative
humidity below 30 % as electrostatic discharges can appear more frequently.

2.6 CSA - Conditions of acceptability

You must supply this device with safety low voltage SELV LPS (C22.2 60950-1) 24 V. The
voltage required for operation must be drawn from a separate power supply.

The IMR system should be placed in a suitable fire enclosure.

The IMR system is evaluated for an ambient temperature of 0°C to 45°C.

You must provide adequate ventilation space so that heat does not build up. The ventilation
space must be at least 1 rack unit (RU 1.75 inches) in all directions. If the ambient temperature
of the rack rises above 45°C, use a forced air fan, cooler, or something similar to cool this
instrument.

When mounting several IMR units above each other in one cabinet, install cooling fan racks in
between instead of simply leaving ventilation space. The specifications for cooling fan racks
are the result of environmental and established criteria for the cabinet, so cannot be totally
defined.

2.7 Advice for Installation

NOTICE
According to the IEC 61010 directive, permanently installed systems must be equipped
with a power disconnect device (for example, a switch or circuit-breaker according to IEC
60947-1 and IEC 60947-3). When using an IMR rack in compliance with this directive a
switch or breaker must be implemented into the cabinet installation and easily accessible
for the user. Furthermore, each disconnect device must be labeled in accordance with the
associated system.

Chapter 3: Application & Design

3.1 Application
The A6720 relay card is part of the AMS 6500 machinery monitoring system. It serves the
output of logical signals of measuring amplifiers at all kind of industrial applications where
reliable adaptations between electronic components and switching circuits of the plant are
required. The A6720 contains 6 relay outputs, each of them with one change over contact,
and three transistor outputs. The transistor outputs are galvanically isolated to the signal
inputs, the relay outputs offer galvanically isolation to the power supply as well.

The signals for controlling the inputs of this card require 24 V levels. The card contains 6 inputs
for direct control of the relays. Moreover, it offers the logical operation of several input signals
by means of 8 AND and 8 OR inputs. The choice of the logical input operation is made with
switches JB1 to JB6 for each of the relays. The switches JC1 to JC6 serve the selection of open
or closed-circuit mode separately for each relay. Activation and deactivation of the AND
inputs is made with switches JA1 to JA8.

The card is supplied with +24 V, and there are two redundant supply inputs (UB+, UN+).
Another supply input (IN24V) permits the separate supply of the input circuits.

Four green LEDs on the module front serve the indication of external and internal supply
voltages UB/UN, U+, U+out and IN24V. Six yellow LEDs show the switching state of the relays.

In this configuration the relay remains in the inactive position
and the transistor output (at channels 1 to 3) is not conducting as
long as the input signal is “LOW.”
The relay will be activated and the transistor output switched on,
when:
the signal at the relevant direct input IN1 to IN6 gets "high"
(contacts 5 -6 of switch JB must be closed)
or
the signal at one (or more) of the 8 OR-Inputs INOR1 to INOR6
gets "high" (contacts 3 – 4 of switch JB must be closed)
or
all 8 AND-inputs are provided with a “high” signal or are
deactivated, such as set to “high” by means of switch JAx,
(contacts 1 – 2 of switch JB must be closed).

4.3 Installation
1. Before installing the monitor, check the wiring of the plug-in connector.

2. Move the A6720 relay card into the prepared plug-in place and press it firmly but
gently into the connector.

3. To secure the card, slightly fasten both screws at the front plate.

NOTICE
When installing or removing monitors you do not need to switch off the supply voltage. The
monitors may be inserted in the slot, and also pulled out of the slot even under voltage.

DANGER
If device tests have to be completed during operation, or if the device has to be replaced or
decommissioned, it will impair the machine protection and may cause the machine to shut
down.
Make sure to deactivate machine protection before starting such work, and reactivate it
after work has been completed.

Chapter 5: Function
The A6720 relay card contains six relay and three transistor outputs for controlling industrial
system devices. Relays as well as the three transistor outputs (channels 1 to 3) may be
controlled either directly, through AND-operated input signals or via OR-inputs. All signal
inputs of the A6720 relay card have a common ground (INGND) and are protected against
over voltages by means of VDRs and Zener diodes.

One of these input groups consists of six inputs IN K1 to IN K6 for direct control of the relays.
Each input signal supplies an opto-coupler, its output is fed to switch JB for the purpose of
selecting the relay control mode. The output of switch “JB” leads to the relay driver, consisting
of two transistors and, at channels 1 to 3, to the opto-coupler of the transistor output. Inputs
of this channel group are galvanically isolated to the outputs and to the system supply.

The second channel group consists of eight inputs INAND1 to INAND8, all of them
AND-operated with each other. First, the input signals are fed to the input switch "JA." This
switch permits the choice between active or inactive AND-inputs. Inactive inputs must be set
to "high" level by means of this switch. This "high" level for the AND-inputs can be separately
supplied through connector IN24V, in order to ensure galvanic isolation between input lines,
system supply, and output circuits.

DANGER
Only close one switch (jumper) of the jumper blocks JA1 to JA8. Closing of both switches
may damage previous circuits.

The signals of the third channel group INOR1 to INOR8 are OR-operated by means of diodes.
The OR-operation of the input signals supplies an opto coupler; the output is fed to switch “JB”
for the purpose of selecting the relay control mode. All inputs of this channel group are
galvanically isolated to the outputs and the system supply.

The outputs of the switches “JB” are fed to the relay drivers. 22 μF capacitors at the driver
inputs serve a switch delay of 20ms (channel 1 = C17, channel 2 = C19, channel 3 = C21,
channel 4 = C23, channel 5 = C25, and channel 6 = C27). This is to prevent the relays from being
switched by disturbance pulses, which may occur, when other cards of the system are
removed or inserted while power is switched on.

If the switching time shall be reduced, the 22μF capacitor of the corresponding input has to
be removed. The exact switching times can be found in chapter 7, Technical Data. The
position of the capacitors is shown in Figure 12, component lay-out.

Switch "JC" is provided with the output signals (collector) of the first and second transistor. By
putting the jumper in position 1 – 2 of this switch, the relay of this channel operates in the
open-circuit mode. A jumper in position 3 – 4 effects the relay to operate in the closed-circuit
mode. The choice of the functions, open circuit or closed circuit mode is referred to the relay
and – at channels 1 to 3 – also to the transistor outputs. The output circuits of the transistor
outputs are supplied with +24 V, taken from the system supply +UN/+UB through a fine-wire
fuse.

Chapter 6: Replace an A6720 Card

If the card has to be replaced by a new card, for example, due to a defect, you should proceed
with the following steps.

DANGER
Before starting this work, inform the responsible staff and, if necessary, let them deactivate
the machine protection.
After replacement of the card the machine protection must be activated again by the
responsible staff.

1. Unscrew the mounting screws and remove the card from the plug-in place.

2. Set the jumpers at the new relay card according to the jumper settings of the old
relay card.

3. Move the new A6720 relay card into the plug-in place and press it firmly but gently
into the connector. Screw down finger-tightly both mounting screws.
