Adverbs Facts

Adverbs are a part of speech that modify verbs, adjectives, and


other adverbs. They give more specific descriptions of how or
why a specific action was performed.
TYPES OF ADVERBS
★ Adverbs of time
○ Describe when a verb, adjective, or adverb took place.
They answer the question “When?”
○ Examples: Annually, daily, yesterday, tomorrow, today,
later, after
■ The newspaper arrives daily.
■ I left after the game ended.
★ Adverbs of manner
○ Describes how, or in what manner, something is
accomplished. They answer the question “How?”
○ Examples: generously, happily, quickly, gracefully
■ She generously donated to the charity.

★ Adverbs of Place
○ Describes where the verb took place. Answers the
question “Where?”
○ Examples: here, there, above, below,
■ I ran all the way here.
■ I placed the boxes below the table.
★ Adverbs of Degree
○ Describes the intensity and strength of what it modifies.
Answers the question “How much?”.
○ Examples: Almost, very, too, nearly, just, so
■ I was very tired yesterday.
■ I almost finished reading the role sheet.
★ Adverbs of frequency
○ Describes the prevalence of what it modifies. They
answer the question “How often?”.
○ Examples: Annually, weekly, daily, always, never, rarely
■ I rarely arrive late.
■ They increase my salary monthly.
★ Interrogative Adverbs
○ Introduces a question
○ Examples: What, when, how, who, why
■ When will her bus arrive?
■ Why did you run so fast?
★ Conjunctive Adverbs
○ Adverbs that connect two clauses. Serve as transitional
words that relate two independent clauses.
○ Examples: also, alternatively, certainly, consequently,
finally, nevertheless, moreover, however
■ Jane kept talking in class; therefore the teacher
reprimanded her.
■ We went to the mall however, she didn’t buy
anything.
