Interesting Facts About Smell

1. Generally, women have a more developed sense of smell than men, especially during their

fertile period, because women were found to have 43% more cells in the olfactory bulbs of

their brain structure.

2. Humans emit and detect pheromones, chemical substances that can affect the behavior of

others, such as sexual attraction. Human pheromones can communicate mood or health; and

of course, they are a means to indicate sexual availability or compatibility. Recent studies

show that women are affected by the pheromones of men and women.

3. Without smell, we can only detect 5 basic tastes: sweet, salty, bitter, sour, and umami. But

our brains combine information from taste and smell receptors to create the perception of

many flavors.

4. Each of us has unique combinations of odor-detecting cells in our noses, leading to varying

sensitivity to smells. As a result, when two individuals smell the same thing, their perceptions

can differ significantly.

5. Smell is the first sense that develops, we can smell even when we are in our mother's

stomach.

6. Humans have around six million olfactory receptors compared to dogs who have 300

million. Humans smell once every second and a half; Dogs do these five to ten times per

second.

7. Memories linked to smells are more powerful and lasting than those related to images or

sounds.
