Utilise contemporary CAD tools and techniques to produce a Design for Additive
Manufacturing (DfAM) report for a bespoke coat hook:
Design Specifications:
Working to the provided design constraints you are to design, simulate and optimise your
own bespoke design for a coat hook, ensuring to adhere to the following requirements:
NOTE - The name embossed/debossed in the hatched area needs to be personalised, but
DOES NOT need to be your full name. It could also be your nickname.
This assignment requires you to do the following tasks:
1. Produce a Product Design Specification (PDS) detailing relevant design parameters, CAD
design process, and manufacturing parameters for 3D printing the design on an
Ultimaker 2 Extended + 3D printer (using a print nozzle size of 0.4mm);
2. Use SOLIDWORKS to produce an initial design which fulfils the PDS;
3. Simulate the loading conditions in SOLIDWORKS and evaluate the performance of your
initial design.
4. Modify your design with the target of minimising material, whilst reducing stress
concentrations and ensuring a robust product, fit for the purpose intended and
manufacturing process capability.
5. Produce two additional designs (by either modifying your original design -or- recreating
a new). A total of at least 3 design iterations should be considered (this includes your
initial design with maximum material), with each iteration aiming to reduce
601088_A23_T2 – Assignment (CAD)
concentrations so that all areas of the design are within a minimum Factor of Safety
(FoS) of 2, and reducing material;
6. Produce engineering drawings of the final design, complying to BS 8888;
7. Produce a Photorealistic render of your final design;
8. Provide a STL file of your final geometry.
9. Write a Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) report that should detail steps 1-8
with screenshots where necessary.
• There is no word limit for the design report; however, you should aim to write as clear
and concisely as possible, using figures/tables, and, where possible, present data-
driven objective design justifications.
• You must submit your DfMA report as a .pdf file.
• You must upload your final SolidWorks CAD part files.
• You must submit your final geometry as an STL file.
• Please consult the marking scheme (on Canvas) when completing your DfAM report.
