1. Purpose
This document provides directives to ensure environmentally safe procedure for the storage
& handling of chemicals to avoid spillage and to initiate necessary cleanup to avoid and
contamination.
2. Scope
This directive covers all related to storage of chemicals at warehouse and at the individual
works ite stores.
‘Any chemical listed as Flammable, Combustible, Corrosive, Toxic and Oxidizing is considered
asa hazardous chemical
3. Responsibility
Concerned Project manager and store keeper with the scope for any type chemical storage
shall be responsible for implementation of these procedures
Procedure
4.1 Storage
~ Any type of chemicals shall be stored safely in accordance with the specifications
from the supplier.
= Hazardous materials shall be physically separated from other materials.
= Proper storage of hazardous chemicals shall be ensured,
- To avoid violent reactions when mixed, incompatible chemicals with dissimilar
hazards should be stored separately according to the following table

Category
Inorganic Acids | Store in an Acids or Corrosive Cabinet. Use secondary containment
to separate from other acids and bases. (for example: organic acids,
inorganic bases, oxidizing acids)
Organic Acids | Store in an Acids or Corrosive Cabinet and in secondary containment
to separate from other acids and bases. if oxidizing acids are present
move them to the flammables cabinet in secondary containment to
separate from flammables.
Store in an Acids or Corrosive Cabinet. Use secondary containment
to separate from other acids and bases. (for example: inorganic
acids, inorganic bases) Remove ALL organic material from this

Inorganic Bases | Store in a Bases or Corrosive Cabinet. Use secondary containment to
separate from other acids and bases. (for example: inorganic acids,
oxidizing acids)
Flammable and | Store in a Flammables Cabinet (preferably a metal, commercially

Gases Gas cylinders need to be secured by a chain or strap half to three
quarters of the way up the cylinder to prevent them from falling,
Organic Peroxides | This material is an organic oxidizer. Store by itself in secondary
containment to separate from other organic and inorganic
chemicals.
Oxidizers Store in secondary containment to separate from other organic and
Inorganic chemicals.
Toxic ‘and | Store in separate Toxics storage area or in separate secondary
Environmentally | containment in a Flammables Storage Cabinet.
Hazardous
Chemicals
- No paper products, office equipment, food, or any other non-hazardous material
shall be stored along with in any hazardous material storage.
~ Always use material handling equipment’s for moving chemicals from one site to
another.
~ Access to these stores shall be restricted to nominated persons only.
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), wherever applicable shall be collected along
with the products from supplier, shall be kept filed at the central warehouse and a
copy shall be provided to the end user at each time of issue,
~ Arrange clean-up equipment & protective clothing to handle any spill/leak.
4.2. Leak/spill response
~ Isolate the area and post warning notices wherever required
~ Establish the nature and hazardous effects of the chemicals involved
= Plan clean-up activities and brief the team
~ Protective clothing, cleaning materials and equipment shall be used for spill clean-
up
- Immediately endeavour to contain & clean up the spillage
~ Incident report (F 043) has to be initiated by the process owner. Establish the cause
of spillage, report upon the cause of spillage, the effectiveness of actions taken,
detrimental effects experienced, to the MR for review, analysis,
