I had once a wife and a servant and a handsome son. One day I had to go to a distant city.
While I was away my wife turned my son into a calf and my servant into a cow. My wife was
a bad woman who had studied witchcraft. When I came back home I asked my wife for my
son. She said, “Your son? I don’t know where he has gone.”
“And my servant?” I asked.
“He was dead,” she answered.
My sorrow was very great. I did not feel happy for a year.
One day I ordered my new servant to bring me a cow. I wanted to kill the cow for its
meat. My new servant brought me the servant who was a cow now. The cow moaned so
loudly that I did not kill it.
I told my servant to bring me a calf and he brought me my son who was a calf now.
When the calf saw me, it was very glad. It ran up to me and rubbed its head against me. I said
to the servant, “Take this calf away and bring me another.”
My wife called to me, “You must kill this one. This calf is very fat.” But I did not
listen to her.
“Take it away,” I said to my servant.
The next day, I was sitting in my room when my servant came to me and said, “O, my
master, I will tell you a tale which will make you happy.”
“I have a daughter who studied magic. Yesterday, when you gave me the calf I went
home. I went into the house. When my daughter saw the calf she covered her face. First she
cried and then she laughed.”
At last she said to me,” O, my father, why do you bring a strange man into the house to look
at me?”
I answered, “I did not see a man.
“This calf is your master’s son, “she said.”I laugh because he is your master’s son and I cry
because he is a calf.”
Then I went with my servant to his house to see his daughter. “Is it true what you have said
about the calf?”
“Yes, my master, he is your son.”
I asked her, “Can you give me back my son?”
My servant’s daughter took a bottle of water out of the cupboard. She poured some water on
the head of the calf and said, “Dear calf, change into a man again.”
A handsome young man stood before me. The servant’s daughter then changed my wicked
wife into a gazelle.
My son married my servant’s daughter and they were happy together.

Acid rain is rain that is highly acidic because of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and other air
pollutants dissolved in it. Normal rain is slightly acidic, with a pH of 6. Acid rain may have a
pH value as low as 2.8.
Acid rain can severely damage both plants and animals’ lives. Certain lakes, for example,
have lost all fish and plant life because of acid rain. Acid rain comes from sulfur in coal and
oil. When they burn, they make sulfur dioxide (SO2). Most sulfur leaves factory chimneys as
the gaseous sulfur dioxide (SO2 ) and most nitrogen are also emitted as one of the nitrogen
oxides (NO or NO2), both of which are gasses. The gasses may be dry-deposited–absorbed
directly by the land, by lakes, by the surface, or by vegetation. If they are in the atmosphere
for anytime, the gasses will oxidize (gain an oxygen atom) and go into solution as acids.
Sulfuric acid (H2 SO4) and the nitrogen oxides will become nitric acid (HNO3). The
acids usually dissolve in cloud droplets and may travel great distances before being
precipitated as acid rain. Catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and ammonium help
promote the formation of acids in clouds. More ammonium (NH4) can be formed when some
of the acids are partially neutralized by airborne ammonia (NH3). Acidification increases
with the number of active hydrogen (H+) ions dissolved in acid. Hydrocarbons emitted by,
for example, car exhausts will react in sunlight with nitrogen oxides to produce ozone.
Although it is invaluable in the atmosphere, low-level ozone causes respiratory
problems and also hastens the formation of acid rain. When acid rain falls on the ground it
dissolves and liberates heavy metals and aluminum (Al). When it is washed into lakes,
aluminum irritates the outer surfaces of many fish. As acid rain falls or drains into the lake
the pH of the lake falls.
Forests suffer the effect of acid rain through damage to leaves, through the loss of vital
nutrients, and through the increased amounts of toxic metals liberated by acid, which damage
roots and soil microorganisms.
29. After the sulfuric acid and the nitrogen oxides become nitric acid, ....
A. it is absorbed directly by the vegetation.
B. it usually dissolves in cloud droplets.
C. it emits another sulfur gas.
D. it radiates an oxygen atom.
E. it dissolves in the lake.
Lately, concerns have arisen that Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, and its immediate
surroundings are threatened to experience a clean water crisis by 2025. Clean water, which is
produced by two private operators – PAM Lyonnaise Jaya (Palyja) and Aetra Air Jakarta –
currently totals 18.7 m3 per second. However, by 2025, demand for clean water will reach
41.3 m3/second as the population of Jakarta is estimated to grow to 14.6 million people from
9.6 million currently (the unofficial figure is possibly much higher).
It has been reported that city-owned property developer Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro)
and city-owned developer Pembangunan Jaya will acquire a combined 100 percent stake in
Palyja. If the Jakarta administration has a direct stake in the city water operators, it will
increase public supervision on the local clean water industry.
PAM Lyonnaise Jaya, which manages the clean water supply in the west side of
Jakarta, is a private water operator that is partly controlled by Astra International through its
subsidiary Astratel Nusantara. Palyja has been active in Jakarta for about 16 years. However,
last year a law suit was filed demanding that the court will annul the agreement between city
water operator PAM Jaya and Palyja and Aetra Air Jakarta (Aetra) claiming that public
access to affordable clean water has been hindered.
Based on information from the World Bank, Indonesia plans to achieve universal clean
water access by 2019 but almost half of the population still do not have access to clean water
at present.
Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) Bali is offering free accommodation for
stranded tourists at the Ngurah Rai International Airport Bali that has been closed since Nov.
27 due to volcanic ash from Mount Agung.
“Not a single tourist should stay overnight at the airport, GIPI Bali together with Badung
regional administration is providing free accommodation for tonight and tomorrow, if the
airport remains closed,” said GIPI Bali head, Gus Agung.
“We’ve set aside two billion rupiahs for two nights, one room is allocated for two guests,”
Gus added.
The accommodation also includes breakfast.
In the era of social media, Gus Agung mentioned, unsatisfied tourists are free to express
their frustrations. “But if they are served well with respect, they will also post their happiness
amid the panicky situation,” he added.
Tourism minister Arief Yahya praised GIPI Bali for initiative, “What is being done by the
Badung regency and GIPI Bali is very good. This is what we call a long-term investment,” he
said.
The two billion rupiahs is relatively small compared to Badung’s average Locally-
Generated Income (PAD) in a year that is at seven trillion rupiahs.
The use of formalin and other dangerous preservatives in food has been serious problem for
three reasons. Firstly, formalin is not for human beings, but it is for biological specimens and
experiments. Formalin in Biology is a 10% solution of formaldehyde in water which is
usually used as a disinfectant or to preserve biological specimens. Thus, it is not for food
preservatives.
Of course when it is used for food preservative, it will be very dangerous to human’s
body.
The second reason is that there is no tight control from the government. This condition
makes the people’s health is really in a threat. When the control is weak and the use formalin
was spread wide all over the Indonesian regions, and these days it has really happened, the
citizen's bodies will be badly contaminated with the poisons. Fish or food traders still sell
their products which contain formalin and dangerous preservatives. Can you imagine that our
digestive system absorbs the substance that should be for the human and animal corpses?
Considering the reasons, we can make a conclusion that the use of formalin and other
preservatives is really a serious problem if it is not resolved immediately.

and experiments. The synonym of the underlined word is . . . .
A. approach
B. discovery

Don't laugh at me, don't call me names
Don't get your pleasure from my pain

Someday we'll all have perfect wings
Don't laugh at me.
