COMPARING THE NUMBER

USING THE SYMBOL
for Mathematics Grade 3
Quarter 1/Week 2

2
FOREWORD

This Self Learning Kit is designed and written for

children where it emphasizes the skill and knowledge of
comparison using symbols and ordering from increasing to
decreasing. It also covers the use of a variety of study
situations. These lessons are organized based on the
following Mathematics for Grade Three standard.

This Self Learning Kit comes in three parts according to

Department of Education standard as follows:

A. What Happened (Pre- Activities): This includes

assignments as introductions or reviews of lessons related to
the new learning competency.

B. What You Need to Know (Discussion): These are

activities that will teach children new lessons that are
worth learning.

C. What Have I Learned (Post Test): Included in this section are

activities that measure what children have learned. Here
the answers to the questions about the lesson learned will
take place.

3
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the pupils will be able to:
• Compare numbers using symbols;
• Order numbers in increasing order and decreasing
order; and
• Maintain good health.

I. What Happened

PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRE-TEST:
Write in your notebook the missing number in
increasing order to decreasing order.
a.180, 160, 140,
b. 500, 400, 300, 100
c. 740, 730, , 710
d. 1,000, 900, , 700, 600
e. 1,500, , , 1,200, 1,100

REVIEW:
Round off the number of the given place value.Do this
in your Math notebook.
1.) 29 (tens)
2.) 501 (hundreds)
3.) 712 (tens)
4.) 1021 (thousands)
5.) 16 (tens)
4
Excellent! It is good that you really
answered the questions I gave you correctly
so you already know the numbers and now
you are ready to learn another new lesson
that we will discuss today.

II. What You Need To Know

Ana, Wyn and Maria are close friends. Study the

table. Which of them has more to collect? How do you
compare the rubber bands they collect?

Study the table:

Number of Rubber Bands

Children
Collected

Ana 2 031

Wyn 2 031

Maria 2 789

• How much rubber band does Ana collected?

• How many Wyn’s rubber bands were collected?
• How many Maria's rubber bands were collected?

• Who has the smallest collected?

5
• Who has the largest collected?

2,789 is bigger / more than 2,031.

In the symbol it is written and 2,789 > 2,031.

2,031 less than 2,789

On the symbol it is written 2,031 < 2,789.

Ana and Wyn rubber bands collected are the same2,031.

In the symbol it is written 2,031 = 2,031.

DISCUSSION:
Observe:

6732 8000 8589

6 thousand > 8 thousands

6732 < 8589
8589 > 6732
6732 = 6732

Questions:
What symbol is used to compare the two numbers?
(>, < and =)
What is the symbol used for a number greater than a
number?
(> greater than)
6
What is the symbol used for a number smaller than a
number?
(< less than)
What is the symbol used by two identical numbers?
(= equals)

III. What Have I Learned

A. Read and answer the questions carefully.

Compare the number with the symbol. Write your answer in
your notebook.
1. Mabungahon Elementary School has a population of
2,360 while Maginhawa Elementary School has more
than 50. What is the population of Maginhawa
Elementary School?
2. Meme and Pepe earned Php 4, 375 in the month of
October. In the month of December they collected
Php 3, 215. In what month did they have a small savings?

B. Write the correct symbol to correct the number

sentence.
1. 9 681 9 816
2. 2 857 2 785
3. 4 632 4 236
4. 4 139 4 399
5. 3 540 3 540
7
EVALUATION:
A. Compare the numbers using the symbols in the box.
Write the correct symbol in your notebook.

< > =

1. 8 978 9 784

2. 9 800 7 400

3. 6 743 6 743

4. 7 986 1 986

5. 3 642 5 783

B. Order the numbers in increasing order to

decreasing order. Write your answer in the blank below.
