ERİS – 3

Ultraviolet Flame Detector

Product Information :

ERİS is a trademark of ERA LTD.

Manufactured for industrial burner systems.
Designed in compliance with the
international norms for replaceable electronic
control circuits embedded in an anodized aluminum casings.
The removable front installation pipe is suitable for use with a 1” BSP
threaded union or a ½” internal thread. The sensitive UV tube located
within the main body is grounded against static electricity and protected
from external factors by pressure and heat resistant Quartz glass with
a thickness of 3 mm. The electronic control circuit, which is fixed to a
4-pin mounting socket with increased resistance against high
temperatures and impacts, is fixed to the main body with 2 screws.

The ERİS-3 UV photocells’ credentials, electrical connection layout and the QR code, through which broader
details can be accessed when necessary, can be found on the outer body.

Areas of Usage :

The use of ERIS detectors is for flame control in industrial burners. Processes that are compatible with the
operating system can be used with ERA brand control systems featuring ionization inputs, and can also be
used for flame detection, along with other control units.
ERIS detectors are suitable for detecting invisible discharge events, such as corona discharges of high-
voltage transmission lines. The integral UV tube has a stable and long-life structure.

The Working Principle of the ERİS-3 Detector :

ERIS-3 UV detectors do not work alone; when an alternative or half-wave direct current is supplied to the
electronic control circuit, which has been developed in accordance with the characteristics of the integral
lamp, the lamp goes off when the output voltage in the control device reduces. The lamp lights again after
the voltage increases again. The flame signal thus takes the form of a series of short pulses. The
sensitive spectrum of the UV flame detector is between 190 and 290 nm. The lowest limit of the spectrum
is determined by the quartz glass bulb. The quartz glass absorbs wavelengths below 190 nm; rays at the
level of 260 nm lack sufficient energy to produce an ignition impact.

Figure 1: Wavelengths of the light

Ultraviolet light is emitted as a result of the combustion process. The radiation of the ultraviolet light is at
higher frequencies than that of visible light. It has wavelengths of between 200 and 400 nm. The amount
of ultraviolet light emitted is related to the temperature of the flame. The highest radiation occurs near the
base of the flame, and decreases toward the end of the flame. If the flame quality in the burner falls
below the spectrum that can be determined by the UV lamp (190 nm), the UV detector will acknowledge
that no flame is present.

Other Light Sources from which the ERIS-3 Detector is Affected :

• Refractory materials over 1,371 degrees

• The arc of ignition transformers

CAUTION When the detector needs to be disassembled, parts 1 to 6 should be disassembled

and assembled according to the above-mentioned sequence. The Quartz glass, denoted by the number 3,
should not be held with the bare hands and should be wiped with a clean cloth. Adverse factors such as oil,
dirt, dust, moisture and steam prevent UV rays from passing through Quartz glass.

UV Tube Replacement :

WARNING The UV tube in ERIS -3 detectors can be replaced, along with its electronic

circuits. Should the UV tube need to be replaced for any reason, the socket that is fixed with two

screws must be released from the main body, as shown in figure 2. Part no. 8, in which the UV
tube is located, is pulled out vertically and downwards to remove it, and the new one is installed in the
same way. During lamp replacement, the UV tube is not to be touched by hand in any way.

ERIS-3 Detector connector replacement :

ERİS-3 Flame Detectors can be fixed with ½”

BSP internal threads or with a 1” union.
If it is desired to be used with a ½” connection,
a nipple of the same length of the thread in the
photocell is to be used, as shown in Figure 3.

Protection recommendations for ERIS-3 Detectors :

 ERIS-3 Detectors emit ultraviolet radiation when operating. When two or more detectors are
used at the same time, care must be taken to ensure that they do not interfere optically with
each other.

 The UV tube within the detector is a product that has passed vibration and shock tests, in
accordance with IEC 60068-2-6 and 60068-2-27. However, if it is exposed to strong mechanical
impacts, such as falling pulses, the UV tube within the detector may crack, or the internal
electrodes may deform and cause poor electrical characteristics.

 Connect the ERIS-3 detector correctly, as shown in the electric diagrams. If it is connected with
a reverse polarity, operating errors may occur.

 The operating temperature of ERIS-3 detectors is between -20 °C and 60 °C. A cooling header
should be used to protect the detector from high temperatures. In flame monitoring systems, it
is highly advantageous to continuously cool the detector, as this will ensure the long life of the
UV tube. See Figure 5

 All installation, set up and servicing of ERIS-3 Detectors should be performed by experts.

WARNING Ensure that you have completely turned off the power supply before making
the electrical connection. Ignoring this warning increases the danger of electric shock. If the
detector is dropped of knocked due for any reason, do not operate the flame detector again, as
safety functions may not work properly in the event of damage that may not be externally
invisible. If such warnings are ignored, safety functions may be impaired, or there may be a
danger of electric shock.

 Lay high voltage ignition cables separately from other cables and, as far as possible, away from
the detector. For the detector signal output cable, use high-quality cables at the appropriate
length for the burner control used.

Electrical Connection of the ERIS-3 Detector :

ERIS-3 Detectors require a high voltage supply, as

shown in Figure 4. The electronic circuit within the
detector body directs a series of processes that
trigger the UV tube. The signal sent from the
detector output to the logic circuit of the flame
control relay enables the ERIS-3 to be used with
control units that operate with the ionization
electrode.
CAUTION Since ERIS-3 Photocells operates
at high voltage; please be careful when making
the connection!

range and the ERİS-3 UV photocell.
In the diagram, the first column on the left shows the
names of the control units, and the numbers
in the squares denote the connection number of the
relevant unit to the detector.

The first row is the phase supply to terminal 2 of the

detector; the second row is the signal output of the
detector “which is indicated with the red line” and
should be connected to terminal 3. The numbers in the
third row are the neutral terminals and should be
connected to terminal 1 of the detector. The boxes next
to the squares located in the middle column are the
control units’ ground cables that must be connected to
the detector body.

WARNING If you need to use a different flame control device with ERIS detectors,
please check the compatibility of your device!

Protection heads for ERIS-3 Detectors :

Protection heads provide long life and faultless operation to flame detectors that will operate under high
temperature and heavy conditions. Eris Detectors contain Quartz protection glass, and so there is no need
for parts 2a-2b or 3 presented in Figure 6. In order to protect the detector both from radiation and the
negative effects of the combustion chamber, first of all, cooling air is needed.
