USA 77221 wtontiwy 357-0049) EB 6310 SIL Kemion manutactures a wide variety of glass to metal seals for use as electrical connectors. The Kemion glass sealed feedthrus are single pin seals designed to operate under pressure or vacuum The glass serves the dual purpose of bonding the pin and body hermetically as well as insulating them electrically. Only high quality, high insulation glasses are used on Kemion feedthrus for low dielectric loss In some cases high alumina ceramic is used © reinforce the glass It also serves as an extension of the insulation for designs that require longer body shells or arc paths, Both the design and the manufacturing techniques of using ceramic to reinforce glass in high pressure electrical connectors are patented Kemion processes, CONSTRUCTION ‘The standard construction of Kemion glass sealed feedthrus is 300 series stainless steel bodies, high temperature glass, and 52% nickel alloy pin. Other materials are available upon request. A representative list of materials which seals are available shown in Table 1 Table 1 “305 or 504 SS "52% Niokel Alloy Standard 316 85. Kovar Hast ¢ Molybdenum Inconet 406 5. Titanium Tantalum Kovar Incone! Carbon steo! Hast ¢ Other Nickel Alloys CURRENT CAPACITY The current carrying capacity of Kemlon glass sealed feedthrus is a function of three conditions. These are (1) the diameter of the pin, (2) the pin material type, and (3) the operating temperature. In a glass seal the current passing through the pin causes some resistance type heating. Glass seals are not easily damaged by this heating due to the high temperature properties of the glass. Therefore, the current carrying capacity depends upon how much “warm- ing” is acceptable. Kemion has set its current capacities for a maximum of 50°F temperature rise. Table 2 Current Capacities of Standard Kemion Glass Seals (62 alloy) in Amperes with 50°F Temperature Rise (030 076 38 25 ‘040 102 59 a1 (62 157 100 69 93 238 166 15 125 318 245, wo 187 475 205. 280 Itnonstandard materials of construction are used, then a in Table 2. At 78°F the specific resistivity of various materials the ratio of the specific resistivity of the 52% Nickel alloy tot multiplier should be applied to these current capacities shown is shown in Table 3. The multiplier is simply the square root of ihe specific resistivity of pin material that is chosen, Table 3 ‘SPECIFIC RESISTIVITY OF GLASS SEALING ALLOYS AT 707F 52h Nickel Alloy 260 30 10 Kovar/Rodar 208 480 09 44085. ‘402 eee 08 Tantulum 81 135 18 Molybdenum 4 37 28 Inconel X-750. Each eyelet lengthens the pin .015 inch. : 7 ; Ss = = ss ES EE SE ET ST TT PLATING All Kemion glass sealed feedthrus have tin plated conductors for ease of soldering. Gold plating is also available i required by special request HELIUM LEAKAGE Kemion seals are designed to meet or exceed Helium leak test of 10* cc/sec. Representative samples are inspected using a mass spectrometer leak detector to insure product integrity. In extreme circumstances a 100% batch inspection can be performed at an additional charge. ELECTRICAL = Figure 1 The insulation resistance of Kemlon glass bonded connectors is a function of temperature. Values in 1200 megohms at 500 volts D.C. versus temperature in °C is Ma shown in figure 1. These values were obtained from con- "00 nectors heated in an oven and constructed from standard materials. Values of resistance are represented by the 12. = OEE SUR CUES oa aGe mS TORE) curve in figure 1. The curve was found to be essentially emer & aero the same for all connectors regardless of seal size or pin mito vere size in the range of .031 to .187 inches in diameter. Maximum voltage rating of Kemlon glass bonded I ae connectors is a function of the length of the arc path inches ta Kemion has engineered its products to give a uniform 031 500 maximum potential for a given pin diameter. The design Table 4 oy 1000 maximum voltage rating are given in Table 4. Potentialsin we oe excess of those stated in Table 4 may result in arcing 125 2500, 187 3000 HOW TO ORDER: 1. Select the appropriate size Kemtite with the desired sealing arrangement, conductor diameter, temperature and pressure ranges 2. Specify the quantity, part number, and description. 3. Specify the body and pin material, if other than standard. Consult the factory for availability. 4. Specify the type of pin ends if other than standard, 5. Specify pin plating if other than tin. 6. Consult the factory on the application to determine the ‘O" ring material or custom designs. These feed thrus use an "O" ring to withstand BMS kewrite GLASS SEALED FEEDTHRUS HIGH PRESSURE, SIDE high pressure and temperature. The “O" ring is crushed into the chamfer when the feed thru is tightened into the threaded hole. The crushed "0" ring makes the external pressure seal. BMS Kemtites work well in oil systems or in vacuums where the vacuum is on the threaded side of the feed thru, In pressure applications the temperature rating is determined by the max. working temperature of the "O” ring. Kemion’s tests indicate for limited time "0" rings are capable of 450°F. maximum vacuum Low temperature. Kemlon BMS feed thrus can be used without "O" rings SIDE PRESSURE for higher temperatures when no pressure is present.
