Three manufacturing facilities with headquarters in Houston, Texas, insure prompt delivery on new equipment and spare parts. Strict quality control and inspection insure that all equipment and spare parts are manufactured from the best materials and to exact and proven specifications. This quality control is made possible by our total in-house manufacturing capability, THE KEMLON DAMPENER Kemion offers a complete line of dampeners to remove or reduce pulsating surges in your process due to the action of reciprocating pumps. The simplicity of the dampeners make them easy to install and operate with virtually no maintenance required. By using a reinforced teflon diaphragm (metal diaphragms are used at pressures over 2000 PSIG), and a selected process base or reagent head construction from the various alloy steels or plastics available, the dampener easily withstands corrosive acids or solvents that attack and destroy conventional elastomeric bladder type dampeners, PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION Kemlon Pulsation dampeners are designed to smooth out the pulsating flows generated by positive displacement piston, cam, roller, gear, and diaphragm pumps. All Kemlon dampeners utilize a gas chamber isolated from the process side by a diaphragm. Positive displacement pumps handling non-compressible fluids will generate signifi cant pressure surges due to the rapid acceleration and deceleration of the liquid during the sinusoidal cycle of the pump. This problem is often evidenced by hydraulic hammer in process lines, large pressure fluctuations, excessive Wear and maintenance of pumps and instruments, and high instantaneous current measurement on electrical input to pumps. ‘The dampener operates by absorbing a volume of liquid during the discharge cycle of the pump which displaces the diaphragm and compresses the gas in the gas chamber. Then, on the suction cycle of the pump. the fluid in the dampener is forced out by the compressed gas acting on the diaphragm, resulting in essentially smooth flow. This action enables the liquid to keep moving rather than accelerating, decelerating, and stopping, as happens when a dampener is not utilized. In some instances, the Kemlon dampener may be used to increase suction NPSH to the pump. This may be desirable in instances where suction lines may be small or lengthy, where viscuous processes are pumped, or when using high operating speeds. Kemlon dampeners should be located as close as possible to the pump. The unit may be mounted in any convenient position either vertically, horizontally, or at any angle. A recommended charging pressure of 80% of the intended operating line pressure is advised for initial operation, This may be easily adjusted, however for optimum efficiency in your process by use of the gas charging valve and pressure gauge that accompanies each dampener. For convenience, Kemlon can pre-charge dampeners with nitrogen for immediate operation. CHOOSING THE DAMPENER When choosing the correct size dampener for your process, it is necessary to determine the displacement per stroke of the pump. Total gallons per hour (GPH) or minute (GPM) is not considered since this is determined by the stroking speed of the pump. Using the chart on the back cover, select the dampener model which has suitable materials of construction, falls within the pressure range of the process, and has liquid capacity greater than, or equal to, the displacement of one stroke of the positive displacement pump to be utilized KEMLON PRODUCTS & DEVELOPMENT CO. The 2000 PSIG pres- sure capability and the relatively large capacity of the SERIES 100, makes this dampener the most popular in the Kemlon line. The SERIES, 100 is available in numerous materials of con- struction including AISI 316 stainless steel, Has- talloy, Monel, Ductile Iron, Kynar, Alloy 20, Steel, and Titanium. A one inch NPT female connec- tion is used to permit easy installation, Flanged connections may be provided on request (Kynar dampener has 1" 150# RF flange as standard). The unit is shipped complete with charging valve, gauge, teflon cord diaphragm, nitrogen gas charge, hydrostatic test certificate, and is ready for immediate operation at your plant. SERIES 200 The SERIES 200 is similar in design and operation to the SERIES 100 but is utilized where larger pump displacements of between 10. and 20 cubic inches per stroke are found. The dampener utilizes one reagent head with a gas dome mounted on each side. A reinforced teflon, diaphragm is used between each dome and the reagent head, thus confining the process liquid between the two diaphragms. The two gas domes are connected to each other by high pressure tubing thus insuring an equal gas charge in each dome. A pressure gauge is mounted on one dome so that the gas charge within the two chambers can be monitored. Like the SERIES 100, a one inch NPT female connec- tion is provided for easy installation in proc- esses up to 2000 PSIG. SERIES 13 The SERIES 13 differs from the SERIES 100 and SERIES 200 in that it is designed for those ultra-high pressure applications requiring re- duced flow rates. The SERIES 13 is designed for pressures to 6000 PSIG and pump displace- wip ments to 1.3 cubic inches per stroke. Unlike the SERIES 100 and SERIES 200, the SERIES 13 utilizes a metal diaphragm with O-ring sealing, Compatible O-ring materials should be specified when ordering. Although numerous diaphragm materials are available, the AISI 301 stainless steel is the standard due to its very high tensile strength. The SERIES 13 is available in any machineable material ‘SURGE DAMPENER SELECTION AND SPECIFICATION CHART pisrstRoKe | maxor | maxor | process sive | oiapHnacm | suippinc | coNNEcTiON MODEL press rsic | TEMP | CONSTR mateniat | weicnt/is | © ‘size 10085 225 _| SI6S.5. SERIES 100 SERIES 200 SERIES 13 These graphs are results of tests performed by Kemion at our test ing facilities, The graph at the left illustrates the effectiveness of the dampener when used in a pro cess operating at 100 PSIG. The graph at the right illustrates its effectiveness when used in a higher pressure application of 700 PSIG. As can be seen by these graphs, the Kemion surge damp- ener not only inhibits pressure pulsation; but also provides for more even power requirements which enhances pump life by re ducing the peak loading on the entire drive train. When charged with gas the readings are limited by the charge pressure; too high a charge will give in correct low pressure readings and too low a charge will give incorrect high pressure readings, The reason for this is, of course, thatthe diaphragm touches the front or back head limiting furthur pressure changes. b. When filled with a non compressible fluid such as oll or glycerol, accurate reading over the entire scale may be realized. When filing the unit with liquid, the gage should be removed and the liquid should be allowed to cover the threads. This is necessary to exclude all air and make sure no liquid pressure is on the diaphragm. ©. Mounting of the unit may be in any position most convenient for reading the gage and filing the head with liquid 3. For preventing “Hammer” a. Locate as close as possible to the valve which is most ikely to cause trouble. Mounting can be in any position but should be as close as possible to the line most effected. 4, Note that the dampener is a heavy, well built unit. Proper installation of the dampener will insure thatthe unit is free from vibration. This will require a bracket for mounting in virtually al field locations. e SEES aE SRT KEMLON PRODUCTS & DEVELOPMENT CO. €& M oO N KEMLON PRODUCTS & DEVELOPMENT co. l 1424 N. Periodic replacement of the diaphragm every 2200 hours of operation or once every year, whichever ‘occurs first, may reduce down time. Severe conditions may justify more frequent changes. O rings should be changed whenever the diaphragm is changed on those models utilizing metal diaphragms, Kemlon also supplies a charging kit consisting of a valve, hose, and fittings with a metered orifice for charging Kemion dampeners from a nitrogen/argon cylinder. The hose assembly should not be used at pressures in ‘excess of 5000 psig, One end of the hose is connected to a nitrogen cylinder and the other to the charging valve on dampener. Gas from the nitrogen cylinder then flows through the metered orifice and into the dampener through the opened valves. Once the desired pressure is read on the dampener pressure gage; the charging valveis closed land excess gas is bled out through the valve on the charging hose.
