(iii) The cell organelle involved in forming complex sugars from simple sugars are
(a) endoplasmic reticulum (b) ribosomes
(c) plastids (d) Golgi apparatus
Ans. (d) Golgi apparatus
(ii) Name the cell organelles which are called 'suicide bags' and power-house' of the cell. Why are they so
called? Give reason. [3]
Ans. Lysosomes are called 'suicide bags' of the cell as they can digest the entire damaged or dead cell
containing them.
Mitochondria are called 'power house' of the cell as they are sites for synthesis of energy rich ATP
(Adenosine triphosphate) molecules by cellular respiration.
(iii) Distinguish between hypotonic solution, isotonic solution and hypertonic solution. [3]
Ans. Hypotonic Solution: If the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the
cell, i.e. if the solution is very dilute, the cell will gain water by osmosis. Such a dilute solution is
called hypotonic solution.

Isotonic Solution: If the medium has exactly the same water concentration as the cell, there Will be
no net movement of water across the cell membrane. Such a solution is known as an isotonic solution.
Hypertonic Solution: If the medium surrounding the cell has a lower concentration of water than the
cell, i.e. if it is a very concentrated solution, the cell will lose water by osmosis. Such a solution is
called hypertonic solution.
(iv) Differential between the cell division process of mitosis and meiosis. [3]
Ans.
Mitosis Meiosis
(a) It occurs in somatic cells. (a) It occurs in reproductive cells.
(b) The daughter cells contain same number of (b) The daughter cells have half the number of
chromosomes (diploid) as that of the parent cells. chromosomes (haploid) as that of the parent
cells.
(c) Two daughter cells are formed. (c) Four daughter cells are formed.
(d) Only one division occurs. (d) Two divisions occur.
