Xtream Fast Imaging Through-drilling-

tool logging System

Brief Introduction of Xtream

Horizontal wells are playing the key role in the development of unconventional oil & gas reservoirs of tight formation,
but dealing with the slim bottom hole section and various type of the well shape, the traditional logging conveyance
and tools are getting difficult to satisfy the changing service market,an advanced conveyance system with slim
logging tools is highly needed.

1. XTREAM Introduction

XTREAM, Fast Imaging Through-Drilling-Tool Logging System, is a suite of small size (2.165”) formation evaluation

tools which can be run in wireline or memory mode, is able to pass through the center of most drilling tools such as

drill pipes, jars and collars, and out the opening of bits. The minimum restriction of the ID of the drilling tool is 62mm.

Compared to the conventional open hole wireline logging system, XTREAM is safer, more efficient and more

economical to use. XTREAM mainly services in:

⚫ Slim and Ultra-Slim hole

⚫ Highly deviated and horizontal well

⚫ Complex hole conditions such as tortuous or rugose well, loss zones, severe washouts.... etc.

2. XTREAM Operation Procedure

A standard XTREAM logging job is run in memory mode. The XTREAM logging tool string is pumped down and

through the drilling tool and released at the bottom hole. The downhole tools then start data acquisition while the
drilling tool tripping out. The detailed steps are as follows.

1. After finishing drilling, a wipe trip with the hollow drill bit to TD to prepare for logging.

2. The driller pulls the bit off bottom to prepare room for the tool string, which is pumped through the drill pipe.

3. The tool string is pushed through the drill bit opening into the openhole, where: the tool function is verified,

caliper is opened, and then the cable is disconnected and removed from the drilling tool.
4. Logging data acquired in memory mode as the drilling tool is tripped out of the hole.

5. Once logging is complete, the drilling tool with the tool string is pulled into casing.
6. A retrieval tool is lowered on wireline to latch onto the tool string and retrieve tool back to surface.

7. With the tool string is recovered from the drill pipe, drilling or other operation can resume while the logging data

is read and reviewed.

The success of a XTREAM job very depends on the good communication and cooperation of the rig crew. A
piece of “tool landing sub” is connected directly above the drill bit used to hold the tool string after it pumped out. This
is achieved by the Lower Catching Tool (TWCT-L) of Through-drilling-tool Wireless Communication Catching Tool
(TWCT) anchoring inside the landing sub. Before trip in, in order to allow the tool string which has a maximum OD

of 59.3mm at the “Handoff ball” of TWCT-L free movement. A larger drift “rabbit” of 61mm should be used to remove

excess scale or corrosion inside the pipe.

3. XTREAM Application

So far, XTREAM has been applied in more than hundred wells in several oil fields such as Daqing,

Changqing, Sichuan and Chongqing in China, and has successfully accomplished many jobs that normal wireline
operations may cause risk and trouble. The logging data quality is comparable to that of normal size tools.
Log example: Comparison of logging curves by XTREAM and by 3-5/8’’ series in one well
Log Example: this is an exploration well located in Changqing field in Western China, the hole was deviated and
XTREAM was pumped down to run in memory mode, several oil bearing zones were found in this well, the zone 2504
-2510m was one of them with a testing result of oil 51.77 ton/day, zero water production.

TLDT (Through-drilling-tool Litho-density Logging Tool)

TLDT uses gamma spectrum analysis to distinguish

Compton scattering and photoelectric effect. The Cs137
gamma source emits gamma rays to the formation, the long
and the short detector measures the intensity and energy
level of the gamma rays attenuated by the formation, the
electron density and photoelectric absorption index
of the formation is calculated , so as to determine the bulk
density and the formation lithology.
Two detectors with different distance to source are used
to reduce the influence of borehole diameter and mud
cake. Simultaneously the caliper measures the borehole
diameter for borehole correction.

Applications
◆ Coupled with the neutron log, it offers a good means of
measuring porosity and identify differentiate between gas or liquid
trapped in the rock pore spaces
◆ The Photoelectric Absorption Factor (PEF), along with the bulk
density measurement, may be used to identify the lithology of the
formation
◆ Measurement of borehole diameter

simultaneously transmits current beams of two different
frequencies into the formation through constant current
sources. The measured Laterolog Shallow Resistivity (LLS)
reflects the formation resistivity in the flushed zones and
invaded zones; while the Laterolog Deep Resistivity (LLD)
reflects the resistivity in the virgin zone.

Applications

◆ Determine formation true resistivity RT ;

◆ Get the resistivity in the invaded zone of the formation;
◆ Coupled with porosity data to estimate water saturation
