What is a Safe Space?
The term safe space generally means “a place or environment in which a person or
category of people can feel confident that they will not be exposed to discrimination,
criticism, harassment or any other emotional or physical harm

A safe space is typically meant for marginalized populations to have a space that is
conducive to their physical well-being. It can also be used to voice common narratives
throughout the group.

A place or an environment where a person is respected, secured, could show and

communicate their true self where there is genuine care, support system, sensitivity,
equality, no judgment and no discrimination of one’s gender, age, race, social standing,
and experiences

Safe Spaces in School

If a school knows or reasonably should know about

acts of gender-based sexual harassment or sexual
violence being committed that creates a hostile
environment, the school must take immediate
action to eliminate the same acts, prevent their
recurrence, and address their effects

Why is Safe Space
Important to students?

When students do not feel

safe, their mental health
suffers, negatively impacting
their academic performance.
To thrive academically,
emotionally, and socially,
students require a safe and
supportive school
environment as the
foundation for success.

Why is Safe Space
Important to students?

Students learn better when

they are part of a supportive
community of learners. When
you create a positive
learning environment where
students feel accepted, seen,
and valued, they are more
likely to persist in their
studies.
