3.4.5 Equipment bonding and grounding standards

This section describes the following:
• protective earth
• installation environment bonding

3.4.5.1 Protective earth

The products covered in this document are defined as having Class 1 protection
against electric shock. This safety classification requires the electrical bonding of the
chassis or enclosure of the product to be connected to the Protective Earth Bonding
system of the installation site. This electrical connection must be made prior to
attaching power conductors, or any other wiring to the equipment. This work must
use suitable materials following safe work practice methods, and be in accordance
with electrical codes and regulations in effect at the installation site.
This connection is made by locating the Protective Earth terminal bonding
connection point on the equipment, and installing an insulated wire with the proper
gauge, construction, and lug termination, and connecting it to the Protective Earth
Bonding system at the installation site. “Ground” is used instead of “protective earth”
in this document to describe a reference to the electrically conductive enclosure.

3.4.5.2 Installation environment bonding

The equipment is suitable for use in an installation site using a Common Bonding
Network (CBN). CBN, DC-I, and DC-C are defined in Telcordia GR-295-CORE
specifications. A CBN is the electrical bonding system of a building, and includes
structural, mechanical, and electrical distribution. Direct Current - Isolated (DC-I) is
defined as having a single point connection of the power return conductor to the
installation side bonding network. Direct Current - Common (DC-C) is defined as
having the power return conductor electrically connected to the electrical conductive
enclosure of the equipment.
Unless specifically identified, the equipment power input is defined as DC-I. There is
no internal connection made in the equipment between one of the input power feed
conductors and the chassis ground (earth connection or protective earth) terminal. A
bonding conductor between the return feed power conductor and chassis cannot be
made at the equipment. The installation of bonding conductors between the power
source and ground must be sized in accordance with all relevant electrical and
building codes, and requirements of the local authorities have jurisdiction.
The 12 V dc input of the 7367 ISAM SX-16F is defined as a DC-C. The 0 V power
return of the 12 V dc input is referenced internally to ground within the
7367 ISAM SX-16F. The 7367 ISAM SX-16F must be used with a dedicated safety
Certified / Listed 12Vdc power source. It is recommended that the output of the 12 V
dc power source be floating (isolated from ground) to avoid ground loops and
unpredictable return current paths.

3.4.5.3 Cables
The following safety requirements apply to the cable connections for intra-building
ports:
• To comply with the GR-1089-CORE requirement R4-9 [31] standard for
electromagnetic compatibility and safety, all intra-building ports are specified for
use with shielded and grounded cables at both ends.
• The intra-building ports of the equipment or sub-assembly are suitable for
connection to intra-building or unexposed wiring or cabling only. The intra-building
ports of the equipment or sub-assembly must not be metallically connected to
interfaces that connect to the OSP or its wiring. These interfaces are designed for
use as intra-building interfaces only (Type 2 ports as described in
GR-1089-CORE) and require isolation from the exposed OSP cabling. The
addition of primary protectors is not sufficient protection in order to connect these
interfaces metallically to OSP wiring.

3.4.6 Rack safety guidelines

Notes
(1) A short-term operating period for CO devices is a period of less than 96 consecutive hours and a total of no
more than 360 hours per year, with short-term periods occurring no more than 15 times yearly.
(2) A short-term operating period for an OSP device is a period that is typically less than 4 hours duration, and that
only occurs a minimum number of days each year. Short-term operating periods that reach a maximum of 65°C
are typically caused by solar loading that is related to placement and geographical location of the device.
Short-term operating periods that reach a minimum of −40°C are typically caused by a commercial power
outage during periods of extreme cold temperatures. The equipment enters a self-recovery mode (cold start)
and returns to service after restoration of the commercial power supply. The equipment warms up to the normal
operating temperature range after returning to service.

Issue: 21 3HH-12894-AAAA-TCZZA 49
Safety instructions ANSI Safety Manual

When the equipment is installed in a remote cabinet, remove the dust filter to prevent
damage caused by high temperatures. While most of the OLT components are
temperature hardened, the 10-GE XFP module is currently not temperature
hardened and cannot be used in remote cabinets. Temperature hardened XFPs are
anticipated in a future release.
Warning 1 — Operating the equipment at high ambient
temperature shortens the life of the equipment.
Warning 2 — Operating the equipment at temperatures outside
the thermal limitations may damage to the equipment.

Due to the high heat dissipation for the 7360 ISAM FX-16 shelf, special equipment
room cooling may be required, or aisle spacing may need to be increased.
