PHILANTHROPY
Philanthropy (Philanthropy can be broadly defined as love for humankind. It is
derived from the Greek words “philos,” which means loving and “anthropos,” which
means humankind.) involves charitable giving to worthy causes on a large scale, but
it is much more than just a charitable donation. It refers to charitable acts or other
good works like volunteering your time or efforts that help others or contribute to
the well-being of society overall. For some people, philanthropy means donations of
money, often large sums, to support or create university buildings, research centers,
or fund four-year college scholarships. For others, acts of philanthropy mean an
annual donation to a local theater, food pantry, or public school. There are many
ways to make charitable contributions from a local to a global scale, and there is
corporate philanthropy, and there are individual philanthropists.
The purpose of philanthropy is to improve the well-being of humankind by
preventing and solving social problems. Philanthropy is not the same as charity.
Charity focuses on eliminating the suffering caused by social problems, while
philanthropy focuses on eliminating social problems. For example, giving food to a
person who is suffering from famine is charity. The food helps the person for a short
period of time, but the person will become hungry again in the future. Teaching the
person how to grow food is philanthropy because it eliminates the social problem
causing the person’s hunger.

CHARITY SHOPS
Charity shops are everywhere in the United Kingdom. In big towns, there may be
six or even more of them. They are shops where people take the items they no longer
want for sale. The money raised goes to charities which support children, old people
and animals both in the UK and anywhere else in the world. Usually, the manager of
the shop is a paid position, but the rest of the shop assistants are volunteers. Many of
them are older, retired people. Many British love to spend a morning cruising around
the charity shops, looking for a bargain. You can find real gems and things you did
not even know you needed!
We interviewed Momtaz Begum 40, a mother of two who lives in east London.
Momtaz told us she loves to go to Emmaus, a charity shop in Crisp Street Market.

Over the last ten years, western societies have seen close to a 20% rise in the
number of children who are overweight. The main cause of this problem is poor
diet. Over the last decade there has been an increase in the number of fast-food
restaurants. For example, on nearly every high street there is a MacDonald’s,
Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut, etc. The food in these places has been
proven to be very unhealthy, and much of the advertising is targeted at children.
However, it is not only because of eating out, but also the type of diet many children
have at home. A lot of food consumed is processed food, especially with regards to
ready-made meals which are a quick and easy option for parents who are busy. The
effects of this have been and will continue to be very serious. Firstly, there has been
a large increase in health-related diseases amongst children, especially diabetes.
This debilitating illness means a child must be injected with insulin for the rest of their
life. Secondly, very overweight children often experience bullying from other children,
