BIM 4.4~ Writing & Graphing Inequalities
Learning Target: Students will write, graph, and check solutions to inequalities.

Launch: Vocabulary Review

An inequality is a mathematical sentence that compares expressions. To
write an inequality, look for the following phrases to determine where to
place the inequality symbol. Hint: Clue words!

Think: Is this a
“Fundraising” or
“Limit”
problem/situation?

Writing an Inequality
Example 1: A number q plus 5 is greater than or equal to -7.9.
1) Identify clue word(s):

2) What sign am I going to use?

3) Write the inequality:

Your Turn .
a) A number x is at most -10. b) Twice a number y is more than 5.

2
Writing Inequalities Practice

c) A number y is no more than -8. d) A number w added to 2.3 is

more than 18.

e) A number t multiplied by -4 is f) A number b minus 4.2 is less

atleast 5. than 7.5.

Checking Solutions
A solution of an inequality is a value that makes the inequality true. An
inequality can have more than one solution. The set of all solutions of an
inequality is called the solution set.

Example 2: Substitute each given value of x into the inequality, then

decide whether or not the inequality is true or not.

Value of x 2+x≤5 True or False?

3
Graphing an Inequality
The graph of an inequality shows all the solutions of the inequality on a
number line. An open circle ◯ is used when a number is not a solution. A
closed circle ⚫ is used when a number is a solution. An arrow to the left
or right shows that the graph continues in that direction.

Example 3: Graph y > -8.

● Dot open or closed?
● Arrow left or right?

BIM 4.5 & 4.6~ Solving & Graphing 1-Step Inequalities
Learning Objective: Students will solve and graph 1-step inequalities.

1-Step Equation Review

1) k + 12 = 35 2) 9y = 72

3) w - 14 = 5 4)

Solving & Graphing 1-Step Inequalities

Example 1: Solve, then graph the solution of x - 5 < 3

● Solve using equation rules:

● Dot open or closed?

● Arrow left or right?

Your Turn

a) 6x > -18

b) x/5 < -3

c) 3 + x > 1

Solving an Inequality with a NEGATIVE Coefficient

**When you multiply or divide both sides of an inequality by a
NEGATIVE number, the sign switches direction!**

< switches to > > switches to <

< switches to > > switches to <

TWO reasons to SWITCH: Negative coefficient & variable on the RIGHT!

BIM 4.7~ Solving & Graphing 2-Step Inequalities
Learning Target: Students will solve and graph 2-step inequalities.

A 2-step inequality is an inequality that contains two operations. To solve a

2-step inequality, use inverse operations to undo each operation in reverse
order of the order of operations.

Example 1:
Solve 3x + 4 > 16, then graph the solution
set on a number line.

Plan It Out!

1) I see _____ I will _____

2) I see _____ I will _____

3) Flip the sign? _____

Example 2: Solve -2x + 8 > 24, then graph the solution set on a number line.

Plan It Out!

1) I see _____ I will _____

2) I see _____ I will _____

3) Flip the sign? _____

Your Turn

a) 6y - 7 < 5

b) 5w + 4 > -11

d) -4g - 2 < 22

Using the Distributive Property
Example 3: Before solving for the variable, you must undo the Distributive
Property!

● Distribute Property: 5(g + 5) > 5

● UNDO +/-:

● UNDO x/÷:

● Graph:

a) 4(x - 6) < 10 b) -7(x + 4) > 14
