Pattern Instructions
Suggested Fabrics
Crisp fabrics with body and a slight stiffness to hold the shape - faille, taffeta, gazar, firm velvet
Lining fabrics should be softer.

CUTTING AND MARKING FABRIC


Position the pattern on the bias of the fabric, the grain line should lay on the straight.
Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut out, mark the CB (centre back) and the CF (centre front)
points.
Mark a chalk spot on the wrong side of the fabric where the darts will finish. Do this by pushing a
pin through the point on the pattern through to the wrong side of the fabric and mark.
Machine sew the 6 darts with a 1cm seam allowance.

PUTTING IN THE HEAD RIBBON


For the ribbon that grips the back of the head cut a 39cm Length of 5cm wide satin ribbon. Pin into
pleats at either end. Pin one end of ribbon to the 2nd seam line on the right side of the hat at the
headline the raw edges of the ribbon and the edge of the fabric of head line should line up.
Twist the ribbon twice and pin the other end of the ribbon just behind 2nd seam line on the left side
of the hat matching raw edges. (See Fig 1)

PATTERN LINING
Sideband (A,B):
Seam A > pin in pleats (fold X to Y) to top of lining and machine into place
Seam B> Right to the right side of lining fabric, sew seam B at 1cm.
Seam C (round part, tip) > pin A to C, lining up the 9 pleats with the 9 notches and seam at 1cm

PUT IN THE STAND


For the stand (head fitting) cut a bias strip of fabric 59 cm x 4.5cm.
Cut a 59cm length of #5 (2.5cm wide) petersham ribbon. The length of petersham and stand can
be altered slightly to fit your head size, this is for a 57cm head fit.
Machine the petersham ribbon to the stand with one line of Stitching. Matching the edge of the
petersham to the edge of the stand along one side. (See Fig 2)
Sew the CB seam on the stand with a 1cm seam allowance and press open.
Pin the stand to the hat matching the CB and the CF point on the hat and the stand
(The seam on the stand is the CB: fold in half to find the CF.)
Sew the fabric side of the stand to the hat and then fold the petersham into the head opening
leave 1cm roll. Elastic can be added to keep the hat secure.

FOR THE BOW TRIMMING


Cut a 65cm length of 5cm wide ribbon.
Sew small sequins, sugar beads and diamantés to the centre of the bow and scatter across the
bow if requires
Sew bow to right side of the hat 6.5cm from the 2nd seam end on the top side of the hat
