Example:

4 rods needed acc. to IEC standard

(rolling sphere method). Aluminum,

copper or stainless steel, steel
galvanized…rods are allowed.
Which installation will be the most economical ?

Compare the price of 4 standard rods + conductor material with the price of 4 ESE or
CVM rods incl. conductor material !

Conclusion:
The number, position and protection area of air-termination rods must be
calculated with the 3 methods acc. to IEC 62305-3.

The design must be the same. The costs will raise up with systems like ESE or

INFO: IEC 62305-3 - 8.1 protection against dangerous touch-voltages

“a) under normal operation conditions there are no persons within 3 m from the

downconductors;

b) a system of at least 10 down-conductors complying with 5.3.5 is employed;

c) the contact resistance of the surface layer of the soil, within 3 m of the down-conductor, is

not less than 100 k ohm.

If none of these conditions is fulfilled, protection measures shall be adopted against injury to
living beings due to touch voltages as follows:

– insulation of the exposed down-conductor is provided giving a 100 kV, 1,2/50 μs

impulse withstand voltage

– physical restrictions and/or warning notices to minimize the probability of down-conductors

OBO Bettermann Insulated LPS - isFang interception rod system

Legend:
1 Air-termination rod
2 Insulated central rod
3 Retaining rod

The metallic components of the rods are made of aluminium of stainless steel (V2A).
The insulated central rod is made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) and allows sufficient
spacing of the arresting components (connection element at the bottom end of the
air-termination rod) to all roof structures. In addition, it guarantees a sufficient distance
of 1,500 mm to the equipotential bonding, which is connected at the bottom end of the
insulated rod
