Tutorial No. 2 2022 – 2023 (Monday 17th Oct 2022)
1. A body weighs 20 N and 10 N when weighed under submerged conditions in liquids of relative
densities 0.8 and 1.2 respectively. Determine its volume and weight in air.

2. A spherical object of 1.5 m diameter is completely immersed in a water reservoir and chained to the
bottom. If the chain has a tension of 5.3 kN find the weight of the object when it is taken out of the
reservoir into the air.

3. A wooden block in the form of a rectangular prism floats with its short axis vertical. The block is 40
cm long, 20cm wide and 15 cm deep with a depth of immersion of 12 cm. Calculate the position of the
metacentre and comment on the stability of the block.

4. A rectangular block of wood floats in water with 50 mm projecting above the water surface. When
placed in glycerine of relative density 1.35, the block projects 75 mm above the surface of the
glycerine. Determine the relative density of the wood.

5. A cylindrical buoy floats in water with its axis vertical as shown in Figure 1. The cylinder has a
diameter, D, of 0.36 m, a height of 0.20 m and a depth of immersion of 0.15 m.
