1 Parameter Tool
1.1 Introduction
The parameter tool has been designed for easy use and serves the user as supporting medium
for operating the SYMAP®.
CAUTION: Before start of the “Parameter tool“ program, make sure that the software
“Microsoft NET Framework 3.5 SP1“ is installed on your PC/Notebook!
If not, free download is available in the Internet.
1.1.2 Connection
Turn on the SYMAP® device. For this, connect the related supply voltage and terminal block -X3
(see label above terminal block at the back of device).
For communication between your computer and the SYMAP®, you can use either the mini USB
port on the side of the housing or the USB interface at the front panel of the SYMAP®. Now use
a suitable USB cable to connect your computer with the SYMAP®.
CAUTION: Make sure that cable insulation or the plug is not damaged!
The operating system of the computer automatically recognizes connection to SYMAP® and
tries to allocate the suitable driver. In some cases, the operating system fails to find such a
suitable driver. The user then has to manually enter the driver location. It is located in the
program folder of the Parameter Tool (.\Drivers\Inf\symapc.inf).
How to proceed:
1. Connect the SYMAP® with your computer with a suitable USB cable.
2. You will see a pop-up window (“Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard”) asking
you: “Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?”
NOTE: In case that pop-up window “Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard”
will not appear, please proceed as follows: Choose “Control Panel” from the
Windows Start menu and select “Hardware” in the programs list. Then you will
see the pop-up window “Welcome to the ADD Hardware Wizard”:
Please choose option “No, not this time” and click “Next” to continue.
3. You will see a pop-up window (“Please choose your search and installation options”)
asking you to choose your search and installation options:
4. You will see the pop-up window “Browse For Folder” asking you to choose the folder that
contains the driver for your hardware:
Figure 1-4 Browse for folder where driver file was saved
Please select folder “Inf”, and click “OK” to continue.
5. Then click “Next“ in the pop-up window “Please choose your search and installation
options”, which is still open.
6. You will see a pop-up window (“Hardware installation”) with a warning that the software
you are installing has not passed the Windows Logo testing:
7. You will see a pop-up window “Please wait while the wizard installs the software”, and
the installation routine starts:
8. After the installation routine has finished, you will see a pop-up window “Completing the
Found New Hardware Wizard”:
1.2 Settings
After connecting the device, start the “Parameter tool“ software (Figure 5-2).
The SYMAP®-Compact devices provide a parameter file (“.spt“ ending) for parameter settings
(system and protection settings). This file allows offline device configuration for a project and
loading the spt-file to the device later or, when being connected to a SYMAP® device, direct
saving of parameter modifications in the device.
CAUTION: If a parameter file is directly loaded in the SYMAP®, the device proceeds to
new start of the system (system reboot). Booting time takes ca 4 s. During the booting
time SYMAP® does not provide any protective function!
NOTE: If saving was not successful, a window opens to signal error (“Error in
communication“ or “Error while sending data“). Check the connection between
PC/notebook and device or, if data inconsistency is the cause, proceed to device
restart.
• “System“
• “Protection“
• “Alarm Parameter“
• “IO Parameter“
“SYSTEM“ allows viewing and entering, among others, general parameters and nominal values.
“PROTECTION“ allows entry of all parameters for the protection functions (ANSI code) available
in the device. Parameters applying commonly for all of the four protection parameter sets
always appear in the topmost position. They are followed by parameters of single protection
parameter sets (see Figure 5-3).

CAUTION: While being in “booting” mode SYMAP®-Compact does not provide any device
functionality – in particular no protective function!
Then link computer and device by an USB cable and the operating system automatically
recognizes and initializes the device.
After clicking “Flash Firmware” in the “Firmware” menu, the firmware update window opens. If
the device does not appear, activate the refresh button repeatedly if required. Then press the
start button and select the firmware file (“.sfu” ending). Flashing procedure then starts and may
take some minutes. If firmware update was successful, the system restarts. If not, an error
message appears in the parameter tool window and the complete flashing procedure has to be
repeated.
CAUTION: Do not interrupt the connection between computer and device during the flashing
procedure!
NOTE: If a system error occurs upon first booting after firmware update, proceed to
system restart by briefly interrupting supply voltage of the device or, alternatively,
wait for 30 seconds to allow the SYMAP® automatically starting the system.
2 Safety guidelines
CAUTION: Please take note of the following safety guidelines for the procedures listed
below!
CAUTION:
If a parameter file is directly loaded in the SYMAP®, the device
proceeds to new start of the system (system reboot). Booting time

takes ca 4 s. During the booting time SYMAP® does not provide any
protective function!
