1. INTRODUCTION
Lonestar Technical & Industrial Services (LTIS) was subcontracted by M/s. National
Contracting Company to provide the Geotechnical investigation for P30332 EPCM FOR
SWING 33 kV LATTICE STEEL OVER HEAD LINE, for M/s. Abu Dhabi National Oil Company
Onshore (ADNOC Onshore), Abu Dhabi. U.A.E.
This Geotechnical survey consisted of exploratory boreholes and electrical resistivity sufficient
information which helps the structural engineer for the design of structures. The total scope of
Geotechnical survey is consisted of the following;
• Drilling of Six (06) boreholes to a depth of 20.0m below the existing ground level with
standard penetration test and sampling.
• Six (06) number of Soil Electrical Resistivity Tests (ERT).
• Six (06) number of Thermal Resistivity Tests (TRT).
• Carrying out necessary field and laboratory tests.
• Performing engineering analysis of field and laboratory findings.
• Developing conclusions and recommendations for foundation design and construction.
The specification for the project is ADNOC Group Projects and Engineering Onshore
Geotechnical Investigation - Doc No: AGES-SP-01-010.
2. SITE DESCRIPTION
The project area is located in ASAB area of the ADNOC Oil Field, South- East Region of Abu
Dhabi Emirates.
The site location is indicated on the general site plan, Appendix A. Field test locations, relative
to the proposed site layout, and existing site features, are indicated on the locality site plan,
Appendix A.
The geology of the United Arab Emirates, the available geological literature indicates that
U.A.E Coastline and the floor of the Arabian Gulf mainly consist of extensive carbonate
sediments, which is mostly of Pleistocene or recent in age.
With the exception of mountainous regions shared with Oman in the north-east, the country is
relatively low-lying, with near surface geology dominated by Quaternary to late Pleistocene
age, mobile Aeolian dune sands, and sabkha/evaporates deposits.
The Arabian Peninsula as whole shows two main geological provinces: 1) The Arabian Shield
in the west which is composed mostly of Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks, and 2)
The Arabian platform that is a vast area to the east of the Arabian shield including Qatar and
the Emirates.
The geologically stable Arabian plate is separated from the unstable Iranian Fold Belt by the
Arabian Gulf. It is believed that a tilting of the entire Arabian Plate occurred during the Permian
period, resulting in uplift in southern Yemen, and depression to the north-east. Crustal
deformations and igneous intrusions occurred in the north-east as a result of this movement.
Subsequent tectonic movements, peripheral to the folding of the Iranian Zagros Range, during
the Plio-Pleistocene epoch, probably contributed to the formation of both the Arabian Gulf
depression, and the mountains regions shared by the United Arab Emirates and Oman in the
north-east.
The near surface geology of the western region of Abu Dhabi is dominated by Aeolian dune
sand, sabkha and evaporates deposits of Holocene to Pleistocene age. These deposits
typically comprise fine grained silty calcareous sand, which is commonly dense and variably
cemented beneath a shallow, loose, normally consolidated mobile layer. Although variable, the
degree of cementation generally increases with depth, such that the variably cemented sand
grades to predominantly calcareous sandstone. Very silty, gypsiferous sabkha and evaporate
layers occur occasionally within the Aeolian sand deposits.
Although surficial sabkha deposits are found throughout the coastal belt of the Arabian Gulf,
and far inland in the western and southern parts of the United Arab Emirates, Sabkha is an
Arabic name used to describe relatively fine grained, hyper saline, silt and sand deposits,
which are commonly saturated with brine, and salt encrusted. These deposits form in natural
evaporation pans where saline water, introduced by sea invasion or elevated saline
4. FIELD WORK
The program of subsurface investigation performed at site from 08th February 2024 to 19th
February 2024, included the following:
• Drilling of Six (06) boreholes to a depth of 20.0m below the existing ground level with
standard penetration test and sampling.
• Six (06) number of Soil Electrical Resistivity Tests (ERT).
• Six (06) number of Thermal Resistivity Tests (TRT).
All of the works were performed by experienced Lonestar geotechnical personnel under the
supervision of a suitably experienced geotechnical engineer. A representative of the Client was
in part-time attendance during the fieldwork period. The works were performed in general
accordance with the British Standard BS 5930:2015+A1:2020 “Code of practice for site
investigations”.
The field test results, method of drilling, depth of samples, ground water depth, reference
number of boreholes, lithological description of the materials, and other drilling and project
information are present in logs of boring in Appendix B.
Prior to carrying out the boreholes, a services inspection pit was hand excavated at each
location to depth of 1.5m. A total of Six (06) boreholes to a depth of 20.0m were drilled below
the existing ground level. The boreholes were drilled using mobile rotary drilling rig. The
boreholes were advanced through soil deposits using rotary boring techniques.
Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) were carried out with a spacing of 0.5m down to bedrock
within the soil layers in order to estimate the relative densities and obtain samples for
classification purposes. SPTs were conducted in accordance with British Standard BS 1377:
Part 9: 1990, “Methods of test for soils for civil engineering purposes”.
The test involved driving a 50mm external diameter thick walled tube (split spoon sampler) into
the bottom of the borehole with successive blows of a 63.5kg hammer falling freely through
760mm. The sampler was driven through 6 intervals of 75mm and the number of blows
required to penetrate each interval was recorded. The initial 150mm interval was intended to
ensure “seating” of the sampler such that it penetrates beyond the zone of influence of any soil
disturbance at the base of the borehole. The aggregate number of blows to drive the sampler
over the final 300mm is termed the “N” value, and is considered indicative of the in-situ relative
soil density.
In very dense and/or cemented soil layers it is often not possible to ensure complete
penetration of the SPT sampler, due to driving refusal, or the risk of damage to sampling
equipment as a result of hard driving. The practical driving limit is of the order of 50 blows for a
penetration of 300mm. Where a penetration of 300mm was not achieved, due to the density or
degree of cementation of the deposits encountered, the number of blows and distance driven
are recorded on the Borehole logs.
Water was added to assist boring and to stabilize each hole during in situ testing. During rotary
drilling a mixture of water and bentonite (a natural clay mineral) was used as the flushing
medium.
Disturbed SPT and bulk soil samples collected during boring were retained in sealed, labeled
plastic bags. All samples were transported to the Lonestar laboratory in Abu Dhabi for detailed
logging and sample processing. Representative samples were selected for laboratory testing to
assist with sample descriptions and determination of engineering properties.
The test results are shown on the boring logs at the respective test depths. Interpretation of the
SPT test results can be found in the Legend to Boring Logs (App. B).
The thermal conductivity is determined by a variation of the line source test method using a
needle probe having a large length to diameter ratio to stimulate conditions for an infinitely long
specimen. The probe consists of a heating element and a temperature measuring element and
is inserted into the specimen. A known current and voltage are applied to the probe and the
temperature rise with time noted over a period of time. The thermal conductivity is obtained
from an analysis of the approximately linear portion of the quasi-steady-state temperature-time
response.
Insert the thermal needle probe into the sample to a depth equal to the length of the probe. A
predrilled hole is required if the soil sample is too hard to penetrate. Care should be taken to
ensure that the thermal probe shaft is fully embedded in the specimen and not left partially
exposed. If a hole is predrilled for the needle probe, the diameter of the hole should be slightly
less than the diameter of the needle probe to ensure a tight fit and no void spaces formed
between the specimen and probe. Connect the heater wire of the thermal probe to the constant
current source. Connect the temperature measuring element leads to the readout unit. A
known constant current will be applied (for example, equal to 1.0 A) to the heater wire such
that the temperature change is less than 10 K in 1000 s. Temperature readings will be recoded
at 0, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 60 s, then take readings at 30-s time intervals for a minimum of 300
s. Turn off the constant current source. The temperature data will be plotted as a function of
time on a semi log graph. Select linear portion of curve (pseudo steady state portion) and draw
a straight line through the points. Select times t1 and t2 at appropriate points on the line and
read the corresponding temperatures T1 and T2. In general, a NSSP (Non-Steady-State
probe) consists of a heating wire, representing a perfect line source and a temperature sensor
capable of measuring the temperature at this source. The probe is inserted in to the sample
that is investigated. The NSSP principle relies on a unique property of a line source: after a
short transient period the temperature rise, ∆T, only depends on heater power Q, and soil
medium thermal conductivity λ,
∆T in K, Q in W/m, λ in W/mK, t the time in s and B a constant. The thermal conductivity can be
calculated from two measurements at t1 and t2. ∆T is the temperature difference between the
measurements at time at t1 and t2, taking t=0 at the moment that the heating starts.
By measuring the heater power, and tracing the temperature in time (for FTN typically during 5
minutes) λ can be calculated. The device adopted here (Hukseflux 13101) consists of FTN 01-
Field Thermal Needle System allows performing fast, on site measurement of the thermal
resistivity or conductivity of soils. The sensor is a Non-Steady-State Probe (NSSP). The
system is operated using a hand-held control and readout unit (CRU01) which automatically
process the measurement data, and gives both an end-results and quality indication of the
measurement. The FTN01 has a fairly simple signal analysis, only involving the conversion of
the signal to a logarithmic scale, and establishing the slope of the curve. In case of review, the
end result is preferably checked and recalculated by analysis of the measured data in a
spreadsheet (EXCEL) or a mathematical program. Using CRU software on the PC the stored
data can be transmitted from the CRU to the PC and be exported to spreadsheet or dedicated
mathematical program. The observed thermal conductivity values are summarized in Table 2.
Electrical resistivity testing is conducted using Wenner electrode configuration. The testing is
conducted using portable CRM AQUAMETER testing apparatus. The AUTO CRM
0 to 10 HIGHLY AGGRESSIVE
10 to 30 AGGRESSIVE
30 to 100 MILD AGGRESSIVE
In excess of 100 NON- AGGRESSIVE
Based on the interpretation criteria given in the Table 4, for the tested locations the soil is
considered as “Non-Aggressive”.
Graphical representation of apparent resistivity against electrode spacing for individual test
locations is presented in Appendix B-“Logs of Field Tests”.
5. LABORATORY TESTING
A program of laboratory testing was performed on selected samples of soil obtained during the
field work. Test results have been used to assist with classifications, and determinations of
relevant physical properties of soil samples. Chemical test results have been used to
determine the corrosivity of soil. In general, laboratory testing has been performed in
accordance with British Standard procedures.
6. GROUND CONDITIONS
The subsurface profiles encountered are illustrated diagrammatically with graphic log cross-
sections in Appendix C. Full details of the strata encountered are given on the borehole logs.
The boreholes observation and test results generally indicate consistent subsurface conditions.
In general, the borehole revealed granular deposits right from the existing ground level down to
the end of borehole. The granular deposits comprised of medium dense SAND turning to
dense to very dense SAND.
No sort of surficial salt deposits/sabkha layers are encountered at any of the drilled borehole
locations included in this report.
At the time of investigation, the ground water table was not encountered in the borehole below
the existing ground level (EGL) throughout the depth of exploration. However, ground water
table is subjected to tidal and weather seasonal variations or by artificial induced effects. And,
it is recommended that, this magnitude of variation shall be taken into consideration from the
existing ground level during structural analysis and design.

The pile capacities can be derived by using the design parameters provided in the Table 9. Soil
ultimate Skin Friction & end Bearing has been estimated and presented in PLATE 1. It is
advised to use a minimum factor of safety (2.5) to derive the safe working load of pile in uplift
and a factor of safety (3) in compression. The allowable limit of settlement can be expressed
by coupling the elastic compression by 4mm plus 0.83 per cent of the pile diameter (Ref: ACI
543 R-12 – Guide to design manufacture and installation of concrete piles).
As per the International Building Code 2009, allowable lateral load can be estimated by
applying at least twice of the design load and the resulting allowable load shall not be more
than one half of that test load produces a gross lateral movement of 25mm. In line with the
procedure, it is preferred to limit the lateral movement of the pile to the above said limit.
Based on the ground condition encountered at this site, it can be advised to use bored cast- in-
situ piles. Care should be taken when drilling for cast- in-situ piles not to disturb or loosen the
strata. Temporary casing shall be used to protect the loose soil layers at the respective piling
locations.
Pile load tests are considered the most satisfactory method to assess the load carrying
capacity of a pile. The pile load tests are to be carried in compliance with ADNOC Onshore
specification for the project.
Based on the site soil properties, the site can be classified as site class A, B, C, D, E or F in
accordance with chapter 20 of ASCE 7. Based nature of soil encountered during investigation, the
following can be applicable to the project site as per ADIBC (Abu Dhabi International Building
Code) 2013 (online edition)

Three (03) soil samples and Three (03) Water samples were tested for the chemical analysis. The
sulphate content reported as (SO4) of the tested soil samples were ranging from 0.078 g/L to
0.171g/L with corresponding water samples concentrations were ranging from 0.982g/L to 1.246
g/L. Furthermore, the chloride content reported as (Cl) for the tested soil samples were ranging
from 0.01% to 0.02% with corresponding water samples concentrations were ranging from 0.18%
to 0.25%. The pH values of the tested samples were ranging from 7.70 to 9.20 (Please refer to the
appendix D for chemical analysis summary).
As per BS 8500-1:2006 & BRE Special Digest 1- 2005, with reference to the sulphate results of
soil, the site has been classified as tabulated below:
From above factors, site is considered for sulphate class 1(BRE SD-1,2005, Table C1). Based
on the sulphate classification, ADNOC Engineering specification AGES-SP-01-001 Rev-1
(Concrete Supply and Construction Specification) for concrete supply and experience shown that
it is more prudent to recommend [Blast furnace cement Type CEM III/A 42.5L as per BS EN 197-
1] / [Combination Type CIIIA 42.5L per BS 8500-2], with minimum clinker content of 45% OR
[45% CEM I 42.5N cement to BS EN 197-1 with 55% ggbs as per BS EN 15167-1] OR [45% Type
I cement per ASTM C150/C150M with 55% ggbs to ASTM C989/C989M, Grade 100 or 120] is
used in a mixing meeting the following general criteria.
For blinding and unreinforced Mass Concrete, it is permissible to use Type I Cement to
ASTMC150/C150M or CEM I 42.5N cement to BS EN 197-1.
Note: Project specification if any shall always take precedence over the recommendations
in the report.
9. CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION
An experienced engineer or supervisor should be present on the site to oversee all earthworks
and foundation construction activities. In particular, it is recommended that all foundation
excavations are inspected by a suitably qualified engineer, prior to foundation construction, to
ensure that the contact surface is properly prepared, and that exposed sub-surface conditions are
consistent with design assumptions.
The borehole logs and related information depict subsurface conditions only at the specific
locations and times where sampling was conducted. Any lines designating the changes
between soil layers represent approximate boundaries. The transition between deposits / strata
may be gradual, or may occur between recovered samples.
The recommendation and conclusion given in this report are based on the subsurface
conditions revealed by site work, examination of the samples obtained, and the results of the
site & laboratory tests. No responsibilities can be held for conditions, which have not been
revealed by the boreholes, for example between borehole positions. If any problems or
conditions different from those encountered in the boreholes arise during or after excavation
and before laying the foundation, our office should be notified, in writing, immediately to inspect
the excavation in order to amend our recommendations if required and ensure that the
recommended foundation ground is reached.
The recommendations presented in this report are considered preliminary, however the results
and site conditions revealed by this investigation may be used and interpret the findings
differently and adopt an alternate engineering judgment by the design engineer.
