Column Analysis

Example:

Column size = 1200 x 600 P = 2600 kN 𝑀𝑢 = 2300 kNm

Try NA axis = 125mm 𝑑1 = 60 mm d = 540 m

𝜀𝑠1 = Corresponding steel strain in compressive steel = . 0035 (1 − 125) . 00182 < 1.15𝑥200𝑥103 =
.02174
Steel does not yield. Hence stress in steel = . 00182 𝑥 200 𝑥 103 = 364 𝑀𝑃𝑎
540
Tensile steel = 𝜀𝑠 = .0035 (125 − 1) = .01162 > .002174
Tensile Steel yields

𝑓𝑦 = = 434.8𝑁/𝑚𝑚2
1.15
For M60 concrete 𝑓𝑎𝑣 = 21.69 𝑀𝑃𝑎 𝛽 = 0.416
𝑁 = 𝑓𝑎𝑣 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑓1𝑠 𝐴1𝑠 – 𝑓𝑠 𝐴𝑠
Assume 𝐴𝑠 and NA axis and get 𝐴11 𝑠 or assume compression steel and get NA axis.
Taking Moments about the centre line.
ℎ ℎ ℎ
𝑀 = 𝑓𝑎𝑣 𝑏𝑥 [ – 𝛽𝑥] + 𝑓𝑠1 𝐴1𝑆 ( − 𝑑1 ) – 𝑓𝑠 𝐴𝑠 ( − 𝑑)
2 2 2
If the reinforcement is yielding then 𝑓𝑠1 and 𝑓𝑠 can be changed to fyd
M should be grater then applied moment.
Assume 1% steel and = 7200𝑚𝑚2 𝐴𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑚𝑒 10 𝑁𝑜𝑠 𝑜𝑓 32 𝑚𝑚 𝑏𝑎𝑟 = 8040 𝑚𝑚2
2600 = [21.69 𝑥 1200 𝑥 125 + 𝐴𝑠 𝑥 364 – 434.8 𝑥 8042] 𝑥 10−3
2600 = [3253500 + 364𝐴𝑠 – 3496661] 𝑥 10−3
2600 = [−243 + 0.364 𝐴1𝑠 ]
𝐴1𝑠 = 7810𝑚𝑚2 10𝑁𝑜𝑠 32 8042𝑚𝑚2

Moment with respect to centre line.

𝑀 = [21.69 𝑥 1200 𝑥 125 𝑥 [300 − 0.416 𝑥 125] + 364 𝑥 8042 [300 − 60]
− 434.8 𝑥 8042 [300 − 540]]𝑥 10−6
= 806.86 + 702.54 + 839.20 = 2348.6 𝑘𝑁𝑚 >> 2300 𝑘𝑁𝑚

Hence 10 𝑏𝑎𝑟𝑠 𝑜𝑓 32𝑚𝑚 𝑑𝑖𝑎 on each face.
