High-energy trunk, FISCO, and FNICO
FISCO power supply
A common method to protect against explosions in hazardous locations is to eliminate the ignition source, or spark. This is accomplished by sufficiently limiting the
available energy. In today’s process fieldbus market, there are two prevailing topologies to accomplish this:
(1) Centralized – limit at the power supply (FISCO or FNICO power supply)
The classic ‘entity model’ requires a comparison of parameters between the power source, devices, and cable. In a multidrop fieldbus system, this can result in a
calculation that is quite involved. With a single, limited energy source, the number of devices that can be powered is restricted. FISCO (Fieldbus Intrinsically Safe
Concept) and FNICO (Fieldbus Nonincendive Concept) were developed for this centralized approach to ease calculations and allow more devices on a segment.
FISCO:
(2) Distributed – limit in the field (high-energy trunk) Division 1
or
Energy limit Zone 1
With the energy limiting on each spur, there is no practical restriction to device count on a segment as above. The user is allowed flexibility to mix a variety of energy-
limiting techniques on any given segment. For example, with the Phoenix Contact FB-ISO, each spur is energy limited for use with either an entity or FISCO-approved
device. It is essentially a FISCO power supply distributed in the field, but each only connects to a single device. However, FISCO doesn’t provide much benefit in such a
point-to-point configuration since the entity approach reduces to a simple parameter comparison.
Each terminator consists of a 100 Ω resistor and a 1 µF capacitor, allowing the fieldbus communication
signal to be viewed as a voltage while simultaneously allowing a DC offset for power. By locating a
terminator at each end of the trunk, signal reflections are avoided. Reflections are a form of noise
that distort the signal and reduce integrity.
